Murray was Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Murray became a noted missionary leader. His father was a Scottish Presbyterian serving the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa, and his mother had connections with both French Huguenots and German Lutherans. This background to some extent explains his ecumenical spirit. He was educated at Aberdeen University, Scotland, and at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. After ordination in 1848 he served pastorates at Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town, and Wellington. He helped to found what are now the University College of the Orange Free State and the Stellenbosch Seminary. He served as Moderator of the Cape Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church and was president of both the YMCA (1865) and the South Africa General Mission (1888-1917), now the Africa Evangelical Fellowship.

He was one of the chief promoters of the call to missions in South Africa. This led to the Dutch Reformed Church missions to blacks in the Transvaal and Malawi. Apart from his evangelistic tours in South Africa, he spoke at the Keswick and Northfield Conventions in 1895, making a great impression. upon his British and American audiences. For his contribution to world missions he was given an honorary doctorate by the universities of Aberdeen (1898) and Cape of Good Hope(1907).

Murray is best known today for his devotional writings, which place great emphasis on the need for a rich, personal devotional life. Many of his 240 publications explain in how he saw this devotion and its outworking in the life of the Christian. Several of his books have become devotional classics. Among these are Abide in Christ, Absolute Surrender, With Christ in the School of Prayer, The Spirit of Christ and Waiting on God.

Excellent book on the Holy Spirit and how we, the body of Christ on earth, really do need the power of His presence working in our lives. He literally falls upon us from heaven and fills us to overflowing as we worship and praise Jesus and glorify His name. I accepted Jesus and became a Christian in my younger years, but I did not ever have any kind of supernatural encounter with God at that time. This book affirms the fact that God is supernatural and His Spirit is all powerful and that only receiving the gift of salvation is not enough for us to be able to walk in the fullness of God in this world. We also need to be "filled" or "baptized" with His Spirit, which Murray affirms is a further working of God, a secondary gift that comes after the first gift of salvation. But we must seek and ask God specifically to fill/baptize us in His Spirit and have full assurance and faith that we will receive what we ask of Him.

5 weeks ago while worshiping at a local Spirit-filled church, I literally felt the power of God come upon me. I started to feel an awesome presence in that place and a deep and humbling longing in my heart grew in intensity. I began to feel a tingling sensation beginning in my hands which spread down my arms and was growing more intensely by the moment. It felt like small pinpoints of energy were radiating out of my skin up and down my arms that increased in frequency and strength until they were vibrating so strongly I could barely feel them. My fingers grew stiff and I could hardly even separate them from each other. My body felt weak and I was shaking under this power. I knew something different was definitely going on here. I went to the front of the church when people were asked to come forward who wanted to be prayed over. While I worshiped and praised God I was being filled with joy and felt waves of energy flowing down through me. Every time a man who was behind me prayed in tongues over me my hands raised above my head would shake, and this happened several times during that evening. It was a wonderful experience. Every time that I have worshiped now for the last 5 weeks there I have experienced the same energy washing over me again and again and several times the very strong energy vibrations up and down my arms. One evening at home, when I worshiped while watching an internet video of a worship service, I felt what I can only really describe as electrical sparks of energy shooting up through my legs that were at first uncomfortable but quickly became more comfortable and quite soothing with a constant flow of energy throughout my body.

After all of this time of experiencing this I can only conclude that without any doubt God and Jesus Christ the Lord and the Holy Spirit are absolutely real and does "fill" those who seek His presence with all of their hearts. Fasting and praying as the disciples in the early church did is definitely recommended and I encourage everyone to learn about it and take it seriously.

From my own experience I can tell you that God is alive and well and loves us with all of His heart and deeply desires that we pursue Him with everything we have and to put Him first in our lives. He desires an intimate personal relationship with each one of us and does not want us to be bound by an empty religion that denies His power. God is Spirit, supernatural. We are also spirit and He has placed us into His spiritual kingdom to live according to His promises and to walk in the full authority and power that he has given to us. It is the same power and authority that Jesus was given by the Father when He was baptized by water and the Spirit at the Jordan river. He lived as our greatest example so He could teach us how to live for the kingdom of heaven. Jesus said that whoever believes in Him would do the same works and even greater things than He did also. So I will end by saying God bless you and your journey throughout His kingdom in the power of the Holy Spirit.

another winner from Murray. though, i will have to say it's not his best book, i think. i considered giving this a four (for reasons i will discuss later) but decided that overall it's still amazing, and there are parts in here that blew me away.

when discussing the Holy Spirit and experiencing him, first (of course) we have to look to Scripture and see what it says. but i also think that personal experience is good here, as long as it only confirms the word of God. i also think that clarity is key when talking about the Holy Spirit, because it's one of those topics that is almost forbidden in some circles and with some people. there have been abuses. there have been things that seem crazy. there have been things that might not have been biblically accurate. and there are differences of opinions--even differences in denominations--over these beliefs. i have no idea if Murray was in any affiliated organization or denomination, but i think that this book is up there with one of the best starting places for those who know there is more of God to be experienced, yet they dont know exactly why they think this, and they don't really know that much about the work of the Holy Spirit. Murray makes no apologies in his beliefs--which i love--and he dives straight into the word of God to define some things. the gist of his message is this: there is more of God to be experienced and this is through the working of the Holy Spirit, both inwardly (eternal) and upon us outwardly (temporal), and this is to effect the fulness of God in us. like i said, that's just the gist and it's a very simplified description.

i think this is also a great book to be read with Harold Eberle's book Ye Shall Receive Power, as it goes into a couple of the same ideas, more or less. there are passages in this book that just floored me. that's typical with every Murray book i've read. my only complaint is that it almost seems like he's not too clear on what he describes about the Holy Spirit's workings. for instance, it seems like he definitely agrees with John Wesley in saying that one of the graces of the Holy Spirit is a sanctifying one where the Holy Spirit comes upon a person and transforms their lives by delivering them of any sinful habits or thoughts or dispositions. and that's awesome! i'll say "yes!" to that! but although he definitely seems to say that by saying AROUND it, he doesnt really explain his beliefs in a nutshell. then again, Murray is one of those writers whose work is very theological in some ways and he stays away from analogy or anecdote of any kind, which is unfortunate, because it would've been really nice to read about some subjective things for clarity's sake.

definitely a winner, and every Christian who is hungry for God should give this a read.

“There are disciples of Christ who know little or nothing of this conscious indwelling of the Holy Spirit.” This sentence spoke to my heart because I was one of those who know nothing of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

""We are never hampered more than when we rely on ourselves. This statement is counter-cultural. The way I have been taught since I was born is that I have a brain and I'm supposed to use it, and we are to do our best and let God take care of the rest. Here Murray tells us that this
mindset is counter productive. The Bible teaches to lean not on your own understanding and strength is made perfect in weakness. What the culture teaches is counter-biblical. Murray is attempting to correct this. I need this corrected in my own heart.

This book greatly assisted in my learning to abide in Christ.

Mr. Murray was a South African pastor/author in the 1800s. His faith was real, but some of his theology in this book was not necessarily directly from The Word. Some was inferred from what he believed to be true through his experiences rather than biblical facts.

He said that at conversion we don't receive the Holy Spirit as a personal indwelling Guest — that "indwelling" is a second experience. He also said that the will of God is found for a person's life only after a second experience of the Holy Spirit known as second blessing.

Yeah... I don't see that in the scriptures.

The best book I have ever read on the work and experience of the Holy Spirit. Easy to read and understand...fills you with hope and gives you the truth to stand on. I am glad I found it when browsing other titles by ths prolific author...and it is a gem of a book. I'm sure I will read this again before the year is out. Brilliant.

This book is not a truly expositional study of the Holy Spirit but rather a word from a practitioner. However, the practitioner in this case happens to be Andrew Murray, whose walk with God is beyond question. Hence, Murray does not focus here on the "what" of the Spirit. Rather, he focuses on the "how" and "why." If one is looking for the "what," then there are plenty of monographs and systematic theologies that can effectively serve that purpose. However, one will be hard pressed to find a better guide through the "how" and "why" than this. Read this book with a credible systematic work and one should be thoroughly versed in life lived in the fullness of the Spirit.

Amazing Read!

I just finished this book and my spirit is rejoicing! This book, has to be one of the best books that Andrew Murray has written, and that is saying a lot! I’ve read most, if not all his books, but this one - oh, my gosh! This book will energize your spirit. It will convict you, it will keep you up at night. It’s a hard book to put down. We have let these things slip in the 21st century. It’s time to earnestly seek the fullness of the Holy Spirit and realize that God is our “all in all”. Nothing else matters. This book should be required reading for every Christian from newborn babe to mature.

This is a short, but powerful, and yet a rather underappreciated book by Andrew Murray. It gets lost in comparison with his more well known works, but combines the great truths covered in Humility, Absolute Surrender, The True Vine, and some other writings and introduces the role of the Holy Spirit in making all of them a reality in our life.

Wonderful deal for 99 cents!

The book “ Experiencing the Holy Spirit” is an excellent guidebook on how to flow in harmony with God’s Holy Ghost by allowing Him access into your heart through Jesus Christ.

The benefits of such a loving relationship are priceless and go way beyond the value of the 99 cent purchase price of the book.

Another winner by Andrew Murray

Andrew Murray is becoming my favorite author outside of the Bible. In this book, he explains so well how our triune God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) needs to be our all through faith. This results in God’s glory and our joy and fulfillment.

Absolutely excellent!! I recommend that everyone read this - it can be a life changing book! The whole concept is that in order for Christ to increase, we must decrease and Murray outlines exactly how important that concept is in our daily lives.

Christ in You..

Yielding to the Spirit is crucial in a Believer life, and doing so the mind will be renewed and come in union with the Spirit. As we do so we will be like Him in our words and deeds, being refreshed daily with rivers of living waters.

Super book on the Holly Spirit

This is one of the very few books that explains the Holy Spirit, but also tells what one must do live to obtain it. Chapters are short making it easy to read, to really think, and to try absorb and apply.

He issues bold challenges in very important topics in a way which is direct, but loving. This topic in particular is timely for me and I appreciate this book!

Andrew Murray is one of my favorite authors, but this particular title seemed more didactic than inspirational. Still, I loved his emphasis on the necessity of allowing God to fill us with Himself in order to live an abundant, fruitful Christian life.

One of the best books I've read by Andrew Murray. He talks about and explains why we need to be full of God and His Spirit and what hinders that fullness.

Murray talks about the Pentecostal blessing the disciples received. It imparted God's presence, the indwelling Spirit, and the power of God to redeem them from sin. It also imparted the mind and character of Jesus, the ability to believe and understand God's word, and the flow of living water from the Spirit.

Murray states that the problem is that most believers and churches aren't filled with God's Spirit. They are saved, but content and not seeking a deeper attachment to God, or the flow of His Spirit daily. This makes the church or person weak against sin and the flesh. Murray says believers must forsake the self-centered life and depend on God to receive the Pentecostal blessing.

Being full of God's presence requires spiritual transformation, from carnal thoughts to spiritual discernment, from pride to humility, from self to loving others, from fearing men to fearing God (PG 337). Only God's Spirit can subdue sin. Sin in us hinders God's work and fullness (chapter 5).

Murray explains God and the Spirit differently than I have heard before. He says God is love and wants to give all of His life to and serve His creatures. His glory is to give His all to us (PG 364). He states the Spirit isn't under our control or a one-and-done gift. God's Spirit is God's energy for daily life received as living water. Through fellowship with God, we receive what we need daily just like we're eating and drinking of Him (chapter 7).

Chapter 8 struck me the most. I understood more of how the Spirit works in us to restore and consecrate us. We need to displace self-centered ways to adopt God's ways. Deny our self-life for God's life. We receive the fullness of God when we yield to Him without selfish desires or sin present in us.

Chapter 10 discusses God's love and encourages the reader to believe and be possessed by God's love or abide in love.

By repenting of sin, putting away selfish ways, confessing and being cleansed of sinful choices, then waiting on God for victory and restoration, we can receive the fullness of God. Yield to Him and be set free.

Chapter 12 ends this book with God needing to be all. God is everything, Murray says. We must forsake all to obtain all He is and has for us. Give up your life so that God may be all and God will fill you with His Spirit (PG 393).

Excellent work, but easy to misinterpret today

One thing that the 21st century reader of this book must keep in mind is that Murray wrote *before* the Azusa Street Revival that turned the term "Pentecostal" into its modern thought of chaos. When Murray writes about the experience of all of the Spirit, the second blessing, and other concepts that have become trigger words to those who have been burned by the Charismatic movement, I had to slow down and remind myself that the revulsion I now feel with those words does not apply to Murray's usage in this book.

Even with that, it can be difficult to remember that Murray is not talking about a lack of salvation — except, of course, when he states that quite plainly — but that he is attempting to encourage the Christian to grow in the Spirit.

I started this book 3 years ago, not picking it up again until only recently. My quick 123 on the book. 1. We need to have a deep personal relationship with God. 2. There are 2 enemies to that hinder us; the world without and the self within, the later is more dangerous. 3. A complete, daily surrendering to Him allows us to walk in the Spirit. 4. He will maintain everything in us...we have nothing in ourselves to make ourselves capable to be who He wants us to be.

A couple of interesting quotes. "Through children we are able to see if parents are spiritually healthy or not." He applies this to the church as well. "The Holy Spirit came for the purpose of making Jesus deeply present in us." I love that! It feels like comfort food for the soul.

This book is written in middle english. So sometimes the wording is really hard to follow but it is a great book to read with a lot of spiritual knowledge. I would recommend this book being read in a group to help you with the wording and to discuss it. I would not have read it on my own, can be boring.
