I'm the author of the James Blake Thriller series (TAKE NO MORE, REGRET NO MORE and FORGIVE NO MORE) and the psychological thrillers EACH DAY I WAKE and SUGAR FOR SUGAR. A third psychological thriller HERE THE TRUTH LIES is now available. I'm also the author of the the sci fi thrillers DOUBLE BIND and, my latest, JESSICA 8.
An avid reader from an early age - my grandfather ran a mobile lending library in Birmingham - I was hooked from the first moment I discovered the treasure trove of books left to my parents. I was a university academic for many years, latterly at University of Liverpool. Now, as a full-time writer, my goal is to add to the magic of the wonderful words and stories I discovered back then. I live in the Wirral, UK.
Tom Markland is rescued from Canary Wharf after almost drowning. He loses his memory as a result but when it begins to return he recalls the strangling of four young women - apparently by himself. Gradually his memory returns and he finds he is a journalist who was engaged in investigating a company's huge financial irregularity. He is in danger from the company boss and his enforcer and also from the real killer of the girls.
The story is an exciting one with a tangled web of characters and motives which the investigative journalist teases apart, only to find he's still not at the end of the journey. I too found I jumped to erroneous conclusions and the swift changes kept me on my toes. This is an action-packed thriller in which, although the story unfolds and results are achieved, there is a slightly unsettling ending. I loved it!
The author sets the tone for this complex and compelling novel from the first page. The tension builds from the opening scene, layer upon layer, all the way through the book. I felt like I couldn’t read fast enough, yet I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss anything. It’s an enthralling tale, full of action and intrigue, with plenty of players who all add to the sense of impending mayhem. Each Day I Wake is carefully and expertly laid out by a skilled writer who understands the anatomy of suspense. My hat’s off to him for keeping so many balls in the air, and then making them land so plausibly. I’m so glad to find there are more titles by this talented author.
I gave this 4 stars and it is actually the combination of two readers review. I read this along with my co worker. She loved it! I liked it but had a harder time with it but probably not because of the book but because of timing. Two teens and the end of school year had me reading when I could. There are a lot of characters in this book and if I had my time back, I would have just made short notes of who was who. That was my problem with the book. My friend on the other hand is an empty nester and read it in a couple of days and by the time she got 40% in, had no problem. I would definitely read another from this author.
There can only be one thing worse than wakening up in hospital with no memory of who you are or who anyone else is, that is then to be told that someone tried to kill you, beat you up and left you to drown. Tom Markland is married to Janet, he is a reporter for The Herald and although his home is in Litchfield he spends a lot of time in London. The last project he was working on was as part of a team to investigate financial malpractice. All this he had to be told, he had no memory of any of it. Tom begins to have visions of four young women being murdered. He can only see the hands and arms of the killer but are they his arms or someone else's, he just doesn't know. No-one will listen to him. No-one can believe he could do this, that is until the first body is found. It is for Tom to discover who the hands he sees belong to, even if they are his. What a story! Seb Kirby will play with your mind in this novel like he does with Tom Markland, who can Tom trust? I really liked how some of the characters backgrounds were introduced by Janet telling Tom who they were from photos she showed him to jog his memory. There are many threads running through this story and they are all connected to Tom. I love the twists in this extremely well written novel that will keep you on your toes right to the end.
Tom Markland survives a beating and near drowning, only to wake up in a hospital with no memory of his past. With his wife's help, he begins to recover, but the strange events that led to his trauma remain a mystery. The police are no help. With no help from Tom as to any suspects or motive, his case is quickly filed away as unsolved. Tom pursues the matter, though, and what results is a twisted, complex web of deceit, greed, jealousy, and scandal.
This is a fantastic novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Mr. Kirby alternates the novel between first person and third person, giving the reader an exceptional view of the action. Just as the reader thinks he has everything figured out, he turns the page to finds things have changed completely. I really enjoyed this novel, and you will, too!
One of the best psychological thriller I have read this year. An Agatha Christie use of red herrings - all logical & worthy of consideration. Journalist Tom Markham is taken off the his usual crime investigations & joins a team checking an investment company, which is suspected to be a ponzi scheme. The pace is consistent & carries you along with it. An 'accident ' leaves Tom fighting for his life & with no memory.. Whilst recovering he has recurring nightmares of seducing & murdering young women ........ Well worth a read - a fast-paced & engrossing novel well written without superfluous sensationalism. Highly recommended.
Tom wakes up in the hospital with no memory of who he is or how he came to be there. All he has are visions of young women. From the beginning, the story sucked me in, and the suspense was unreal as the plot turned darker, the twists came faster, leaving me breathless and desperate to know how it all ends. Fans of crime thrillers will love this book!
This novel is written in the first person. It's an extremely intriguing story of Tom Markland waking in the hospital. His body had been badly bruised when he was thrown into the bay to drown. He survived, but he's lost his memory. His first visitor is a young female Police Constable Daley with notebook in hand to try to gain information about his assault. He has no wallet, ID, or mobile phone when dragged out of the water. She does inform him that high levels of narcotics were found in his blood exam. Soon, his wife, Janet Markland, arrives in his room. She's sobbing with relief to have found him after he'd been missing for 10 days. Tom can't even recognize her being his wife. Then he has a vision. He's not sure he's dreaming or awake but he sees a girl named Rebecca, young, dark hair, on a Thames River cruise boat, the moon shining, making love, he is committing adultery, and then strangles her. Just like he did to Cathy! He seeks information from his wife to help bring his memory back. For one, he's an investigative journalist for The Herald newspaper. He just can't believe he could kill anyone. This is an amazing, frightening, engulfing, suspenseful story which will keep you guessing until the very end. It is packed with surprises! Highly recommend.
Two things that really liked about this book. The unusually short chapters not only helped to make this a pacey and entertaining read, it also meant that I could put the book down and pick it up again without having to backtrack to find out where I left off. This makes it an excellent read for busy people. The other thing I liked was the opening premise of a man who has lost his memory but appears to remembering someone else’s recollections. For me this was a rare thing, an original idea. Do I have any gripes? Just two and neither are fair criticisms of the author. Personally I like a surprise ending. I know that a lot of people enjoy working out who the baddy is and if this is you, this story is ideal because the clues are there. The second is that the opening is such a strong one that I imagined the story developing in a completely different way. The author quite rightly takes the reader on his own journey. Anything else would have been disappointing. That leaves two questions. Did I enjoy this book and would I recommend it to another reader? The answer to both is a definite yes. Cheers.
This book grabs you straight away as you are pulled into the world of Tom Markland who is in hospital with no memory after someone left him to drown in the Thames.
The pacing of the story is great and seems to be helped by the use of very short chapters. The chapters seem to move the story along from one aspect to another in conjunction with the plot.
The story is intriguing and as Tom and his wife try to work what happened you begin to feel like an observer on their life - one they are trying to put back together. At times their relationship seemed too perfect. Tom accepts all he's told about his life and they never seem to react to the stress of their situation. The dialogue between them, although well written seems a little old fashioned for their ages.
I did enjoy the book though and would read another by this author.
This really is a cracking good read. Tom Markland a reporter is pulled from the Thames suffering from memory loss. Not only this, the poor guy has visions of young women being killed by the hands of another. Sooner or later he becomes a suspect for murder and then a very clever story indeed follows keeping you on the edge of your seat. As you turn the pages you are drawn into big web of deceit by more than one of London’s… well let’s just say Characters. And on the subject of characters the author has got them off to a tee making them all interesting and believable. All in all I really enjoyed this book and will I buy another from this author? Absolutely!
Seb Kirby. Great read. EACH DAY I WAKE. When Tom wakes up in hospital he has no memory's of anything. He ended up in the hospital after being fished out of the North Dock. When young woman start to go missing, only he knows what has happened to them. Each time he closes his eyes another girl dies. He can see what is happening but is powerless to stop it. The only way he will get his memory back is if he finds out who the murderer is. An excellent read, highly recommended. 5* 24 September 2015.
An enjoyable fast paced thriller. Lots of twists & turns & not my expected killer! Lot of the business aspects were lost on me, but the twists & turns were worth reading through. Looking forward to more by this author
