Man cannot live without love.... His life is senseless if love is not revealed to him, if he does not encounter love, if he does not experience it and make it his own, if he does not participate intimately in it. ― John Paul II , Redemptor Hominis If you were asked what immediately comes to mind when you hear the words "Catholic Church", would you answer "an intimate relationship with the God who loves me"? If not, you would do well to read this engaging and thought-provoking book which explains why such a relationship is the reason for everything the Church does and teaches. Professor Edward Sri will show you how all the pieces of the Catholic faith, including the most baffling ones, fit together to make one beautiful mosaic of God's love for us and our own participation in that all-encompassing love. Using the Catechism of the Catholic Church as his itinerary, Sri will walk you through all the important aspects of the Catholic Church―what Catholics believe about God and the difference it should make in life. Along the way he addresses such often-heard questions More than an intellectual enterprise, this work is also a deep spiritual reflection and a practical guide to living out our faith in Christ. It aims to form both the head and the heart, not only helping us to understand Jesus and his plan of salvation, but inspiring us to love God and our neighbor better.

Orthodox and thorough. It was not revelatory for me but that’s ok. I think I would recommend this to a Catholic “re-vert” or to an intellectual convert.
This is a good book to introduce the Catholic faith. It focuses on God who is Love. It also focuses much on the details presented in the Bible and the Cathecism which are very foundational to give a comprehensive view of the Catholic faith in a short book.
Reading this at this point gave me a good review about the Catholic faith. Sometimes it goes to the very technical and detailed explanations of certain aspects of the faith. Sometimes, it drags on for me. For me it lacked style but it did well enough to cover all the important aspects of the faith which I think is more important. I do recommend this book for anyone who wants a review of the Catholic faith, either for those coming home to the Church or for those just wanting a good review after a long time immersed to what the secular world is telling them. I also do recommend the book “Catholicism” by Bishop Robert Barron which also has the same expository aim about the Catholic faith but written with a certain elegant style in my opinion.
What I really liked about this book was something near the end of the book. It discussed prayer. I am reading this on the year Pope Francis declared as the Year of Prayer. I think I will follow my reading of this with a book about prayer. It made me realised that, as Saint Therese of the Child Jesus said, it is better talk to God than to talk about God, and in praying faithfully, we become more conformed to His will and fall and stay in love with Him who wants and wills the best for us.
This is the best summary of Catholic Christianity I’ve read, and it would be great for Catholics who want to explore what their faith teaches or anyone else who wants to see what Catholics believe. I’m disappointed the (admittedly brief) section on sexuality didn’t even mention openness to life, as the “no birth control” policy is a major bone of contention for many.
Dr. Sri is incredibly clear and concise in this walkthrough of the Christian faith from a Biblical perspective, which as it turns out ties to Catholicism precisely through the Mass. He covers pretty much everything, and backs up what he says.
Edward Sri provides an excellently concise summary of key aspects of the Catholic Faith. Anyone interested in understanding not just “what,” but “why,” will benefit from reading this book. I encourage anyone exploring the Catholic Faith, or wishing to deepen their understanding of it, to read this book.
I've been Catholic for a little over a year, I'm always trying to learn more about being Catholic. This book was about the love God has for us and how much he wants to have a closer relationship with us. I've read a few books my Edward Sri and I'm becoming a big fan of his writings hope to read more of his books.
A good introduction to the Catholic faith. I learned a lot. The writing wasn't the best in places, though. Sometimes I felt like I was reading a paper from freshman comp 101.
DVD Study Programs have revolutionized the way we can share the Catholic faith with others. There have been some great ones produced, including Catholicism and Symbolon. Unfortunately, not everyone has the time or resources to commit to these studies. Dr. Sri took that into account when he wrote the book Love Unveiled, which is based on Symbolon. In this book, Dr. Sri explains the Catholic faith in a way that few have tried to do. The main premise of the book isn't the tradition or rituals of the Catholic Church. (Though, they are important.) Instead, he tells us "The Catholic Church stands for the God who is madly in love with you, who has a plan for you and wants you to be happy - the God who even sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to die for you, who wants to forgive you and help you in your life, and who, most of all, wants an intimate, personal relationship with you so that you can be with him forever in heaven." Re-read that and let it sink in. If every Catholic could adopt that message and share that message, we could set the world on fire!
The book is sixteen chapters long and covers all the tenets of the Catholic faith. It discusses who God is, Divine Revelation, Mary, the Sacraments and so much more. However, instead of a dry presentation of this is what we believe and this is why we believe it, Dr. Sri presents all these aspects through the lens of God's love. For example, people can choose to look at the cross as a torture device, but we instead look at it as the ultimate symbol of love. Some might choose to look at Confession as unnecessary or even an invasion of privacy. Why do they need it if they can just go to God and confess their sins? Instead, the Church views it as a loving way to reconcile man with God and His Church. As you can see from just these two examples, love is the underlying theme of this book and of the Catholic Church. Unfortunately, too many people have forgotten that truth.
Dr. Sri has a way of explaining the faith that makes it simple without taking away the profound nature of it all. If you are in an RCIA program, new to the faith, or just looking to deepen your appreciation of the Catholic faith, then this is the book for you. It is highly recommended for all and would make a great gift for graduating seniors who might be moving away for the first time ever.
