This is the graphic novel treatment for the classic Dragonlance novels and as with Dragons of Autumn Twilight - The Graphic Novel this installment comes off as very confusing, especially if you had not read the novels prior. I couldn't help but notice some bad reviews for the overall story of these classic Dragonlance novels. I feel like people aren't aware these things were written in the 80's. Furthermore people complained that the stories feel like reading a Dungeons & Dragons game session... yeah, that was kind of their ENTIRE point. So, it sounds like these stories succeeded at what people think is a "failure" for some reason. The Fantasy genre has changed quite a bit since the 80's and, I think, for their time these were great stories of high fantasy. The on criticism I do agree with though is that there were entirely too many characters. I remember when I first read these books in middle school it was really hard to keep track of what was going on with all the crazy names.

In any event, Dragons of Winter night Graphic Novel is a good refresher for those of us who liked the story, but don't remember the exact details. Again, I can't imagine someone who hasn't read the novels keeping up with this though. I think part of the problem is outright page count. There just aren't enough pages to cover all the character development or any nuances. Even though this was published over four issues, I think the page count was similar to the eight issue style of the first novel... who knows how they will handle Dragons of Spring Dawning...

As before, I read this as individual comic issues.

This one packs so much story into its pages it suffers from some of the same setbacks as the novel itself- the coolest stuff (reclaiming the Hammer of Kharas, the assault on Ice Wall, etc.) gets mentioned in passing only!

How the art team couldn't manage to get the colouring of Silvara's hair right, also, was an error grievous yet more grievous than miscolouring Fistandantilus' spellbook last time. Good grief!

Still, it's Dragonlance, so it gets a pass, particularly when it manages to pull scenes like this one off:

I have really tried to like the core Dragonlance novels, but I just can't get that excited about them. I feel much the same about this adaptation.

It is a little rushed. It tries to cram a lot onto its pages and ends up glossing over a lot, but the book did that too. For a novel where lots of epics events occur, there really isn't much action. Also, Raistlin is a dick, Caramon's stupidity is vastly overplayed, and it's unclear why everyone follows Tanis (enough so that it has to be talked out rather unconvincingly).

The art is mostly good, though I think most of the non-humans look a bit off much of the time. The dragon lances also look dumb. They mostly seem to be spears rather than lances, and rather short spears at that.

The encounter between Tanis and Kitiara is also badly done. It reads like, 'oh, haven't seen you in a while, let's fuck!' It's a bit like that in the novel as well, but the adaptation strips it down a little too much. The shipwreck scene where everyone is bobbing in the ocean while wearing armor and fetching up sinking relics is also a fail.

If you didn't read the novels, but wanted to get more of the story than a Wikipedia synopsis this might work. I feel like people who really loved the novels will be a little disappointed by this, but will also appreciate the effort.

Limited by 5 stars, the Dragonlance series are so well written, the characters are flawed, afraid, and so real. Action is intense and the plot so dense you’ll have to read it a few times to tease it all out. I Forrest read this book in the 80s and pulled it off my bookshelf every now and again and relive the adventure.

this was really cool to see the characters and scenes in picture- but- some of my favorite scenes were missing from the OG book. I think I still prefer to make my own brain pictures lol definitely read this faster than the OG book though 😅 as one page had just the word KABLAM on it 😅

Three stars, but barely, as the quality of the plot went down (probably because they just tried to cram too much of the books into the format).

The artwork in volume two seemed to improve over the first, and opened strong. Still some niggles, like the depiction of Fizban.

Still a very rushed story, but an entertaining volume.

Continues to faithfully follow the story. I am surprised at what I remember and what I don't from my first reading of the book. There is also how I pictured things and the artist has drawn the story. The artwork is amazing.

Some of the best artwork in a graphic novel adaptation that I've seen.
