Five Traits of a Christ-Follower

Rate this book
What distinguishes a follower of Jesus? The contributors to Five Traits of a Christ Follower ―each with a long history of knowing Jesus and making him known―see five “core competencies” as critical to authentic discipleship; growing in relationship with God, knowing and living from the Scriptures, engaging those who don’t know Christ, living in community with other believers, and equipping others to follow Christ. Spend a month with a master class of disciple-makers, and find yourself growing in your capacity, and your enthusiasm, for following Christ.

Foreword by Jerry Bridges. Contributors from The Navigators and friends include Len Sweet, Jane Kirkpatrick, and others.

This is a cute pocket-sized paperback book that you can carry almost anywhere. Instead of chapters like most books have you have Traits. There are 5 traits explained in this book, Under each trait is more explanation of what each trait is . Pretty clever I think. There is so much knowledge put together in this 79 paged little book. Here are a few inserts to give you an idea.
Fruits of Living with Jesus
_______Joe Brown
I am the vine: you are the branches. Those who remain in me , and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. JOHN 15:5 NLT

THERE'S A DIFFERENCE, in our world today, between calling yourself a Christian and being connected to Christ. As a young Christian I memorized John 14;21.

Interested now???? I thought so . After I read the first part of the book that is above. I could not put the book down. I must admit When I first got this in the mail I was a bit disappointed by the size of the book. I personally like bigger books and that are hardback. But I do not need to give this book a bad review based on my personal preferences. There are so many ways you can apply this book and learn from it in your life along with the most important book of all of course is the Bible. Each sub chapter is not but 2 pages so it does not take but just a few minutes to read. I found myself applying them to my everyday life. The Bible is your Main meal but this book is such a great snack to eat throughout the day.
Five traits were so simple to apply I really enjoyed this book.
First trait is Walking with Jesus
Second trait is :Knowing and Living the Scriptures
Third Trait is Participating in the Community

If you are finding yourself wondering what the other 2 traits are then you need to get his book.
Under each trait goes more into detail and scriptures put so simple that pretty much if you can read it you can apply it. You find yourself doing it on your own.
I really enjoyed the Five Traits of a Christ Follower and belive that everyone should have this book to their own library. Would even be a great gift to add to your visits to sick family members . Bring it with you and read it on everyday trips to the bus. It will change your way of viewing your outlook.
Another insert of the book I will share with you is below
If we're going to win people to know Christ, then let's win people.

The end of the book is where you get a list of contributors and gives a bit of interesting facts of the person
The Author Dr. Doug Neunke serves as the Navigator's U.S. president. He is passionate about helping his friends to know Jesus and to help others know him. He enjoys developing leaders who reflect the Lord Jesus, and he loves to fish--- for people and trout.

5 Smooth Stones

David stooped down and picked up a handful of stones, smooth to his touch and weighty. The rest of his story tumbles effortlessly into memory: the battle with Goliath, David’s rise to fame in Israel, the finger of God upon his life. In Five Traits of a Christ Follower, Doug Nuenke fills up the metaphor of those five smooth stones with five traits, five areas of growth for the one who believingly follows Jesus. He draws on the experiences and writing of thirty skilled disciple-makers whose platforms range from nurse, teacher, and author to missionary, military personnel, and rap artist! What emerges from the collection is a small discipleship training manual that addresses the true test of our life in Christ: our character.
1. Walking with Jesus involves living in company with Him in such a way that our power and influence is clearly coming from “the Vine.” Like Martha, it is often my goal to “put dinner on the table — regardless of whether the goal of her guests was to eat.” If my focus is on Jesus — rather than on controlling every stray atom — my attitude will reveal a love for God that fuels my walk and results in passionate attachment to His kingdom priorities.
2.Knowing and Living the Scriptures involves more than gulping down pre-digested thinking about the Bible. Ancient instructions in Deuteronomy reveal that an intimate knowledge of the Word yields a life-changing awe of God, motivation to obey God’s commands, and an accurate view of self that leads to humility. The truth is that life is not found in knowledge alone, but in God Himself, and a follower of Christ will pursue Him through His Word. One tool in pursuing a deeper knowledge of the Word is BibleGateway, an Internet resource that makes it possible to read, hear, search, study, compare, and share the Bible in 200+ versions and 70+ languages.
3.Participating in Community is much more than a weekly gathering in a building. Community is “doing life” together, urging one another toward the finish line by speaking words of courage and faith. This requires the risk of vulnerability as we confess our sins to one another and experience the healing that God provides through the Body.
4.Engaging with Those Who Don’t Know Christ requires jumping into the neighborhood just as Jesus did when He took on a body and came to Earth. Reflecting God’s glory is a matter of being intentionally positioned to shine among those who are in need, not motivated by superiority, but by love and a desire to engage with people — even those with whom we have very little in common. With my mother living in an nursing home, I am granted the unique privilege of ministering in small ways in that environment, and it is my challenge to discover how to do that in a meaningful way.
5.Reproducing Spiritual Generations is gloriously demonstrated in the four-generational admonition from Paul to Timothy. Our ministry of multiplication begins with passing on the truth we have received and then equipping the hearers to become disciples by “investing deeply, consistently, relationally, and with love.” This is possible only from a transparent and accessible life.

Reading one short entry each day from Five Traits of a Christ-follower is like spending a month being challenged in the core competencies of the faith by having little conversations with someone who has walked the path before. David picked up his five smooth stones so that they could be launched by a sling. By the grace of God, it will be Christ-like character that launches the believer into a life of enthusiasm, productivity, and embodiment of the spirit of Jesus in every season of life.

A lot has been said in recent months about the fruit of those who claim to follow Christ. What is it that distinguishes those who claim to follow Christ from those who do not? This is the question that Five Traits of a Christ-Follower explores. This little book (just 72 pages and fits in your pocket) is edited by Doug Nuenke , includes a Forward written by Jerry Bridges, and includes contributions by men and women who have thought a lot about this question.

Nuenke suggests that authentic followers of Jesus will display, to certain (but increasing) degrees the fruit of walking with Jesus, knowing and living scripture, participating in community, engaging with those who don' know Christ, and reproducing spiritual generations. The book is organized with an introduction, five parts which dig deeper into the five traits, and a conclusions.

I found that this book had a gospel centered perspective. Rather than simply telling the reader to try harder, or merely repeating the commands, the authors responsibly presented the commands in scripture to conform to the traits of a Christ-Follower, and then firmly rooted them in the gospel indicatives of scripture. For instance, in the chapter on becoming like Jesus in out attitude, Mark Kimmel grounds our motivation not in the command, but in the fact that Christ himself was a servant and we become like him via our close connection (theologically: union with Christ).

There is enough in this small booklet to challenge and encourage everyone. I was encouraged in Trait 3 on Participating in Community. Likewise, I was challenged in Trait 4, Engaging with Those who Do Not Know Christ. It would be easy to overlook this book due to its size and think that it doesn't have enough to offer; but the truth is that the structure of the book, with its short "devotional" style essays and challenging application questions lends itself to being a useful resource. I love that it is small enough to fit in my pocket so I can haul it around with me and read throughout the day. This is a book worth buying and reading several times through.

This is a wonderful pocket sized resource for Christians to have on hand. It’s written as a devotional and separated by traits. There are 5 traits that are mentioned, then about 7 or 8 devotions relating to each trait. The traits are as follows: Walking with Jesus, Knowing and Living the Scriptures, Participating in Community, Engaging with Those Who Don’t Know Christ and Reproducing Spiritual Generations.

I have nearly half of this book highlighted as it really spoke to me. It made me realize why we need to do certain things and act in a certain manner as Christians. People are looking at us portraying to be a Christian so we better act like one. I really liked how there were 2-4 reflection questions at the end of each 2 page devotional. Those make you just dig in even deeper
.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend as a good book for everyone to read. This book gets 5***** from this reviewer.

I received this book from Tyndale in exchange for my honest review.
