This book is an interesting take on golf history. The author selects one hole from fifty different golf courses beginning in the 1800’s and continuing through to 2006. Some of the holes were selected because they were at pivotal points in tournaments while others were chosen because of their uniqueness. The golf history is interesting for a golf fan and as the time period reached the 1960’s I could remember watching some of those historic moments. This was well-researched and the author even adds a bit of humor now and then just to see if the reader was really paying attention. This book would be a great source of golf trivia to wow the members of your usual foursome.
The Story of Golf in Fifty Holes is a well-researched and very well-written overview history of the game of golf. Full of very interesting stories about the planning and construction of famous and not so famous holes, complete with photos and illustrations. Anyone who is a golf lover will enjoy this book.
pretty good history of these golf holes.. can't even begin to think about the research that went into this.. however- errors. p.49, 63, 104, 113, 156, 159, 168(2).. methinks it went to press before the typos were all found. punctuation was lacking severely besides.
The fifty holes are on historic and current popular golf courses, with each having a unique story. I especially enjoyed the chapters on the first Scottish courses. Interesting book for golfers looking for background information on golf courses they have played and might like to play.
