Rate this book

My gut feeling wants this book to be right, because it matches my view of What Is Going Wrong In Society exactly - a sense of unfocused anxiety created by confused responsibilities that information-flooded and decision-overtaxed minds are no longer capable of sorting out.
But.
As a Freudian developmental psychiatrist writes about what is going awry in modern society. There were a lot of things that I found myself nodding along to, such as the difficulty distinguishing between roles in a society that blurs the line between private and public life and fulfilling what certain roles demand from you.
However, this problem has always existed in a sense (because for a long stretch of history, there was no distinction between workplace and home, and the author does not really have much to say on that end.
Also, there are a lot of blindly made points about traditional roles and their importance for mental health and a working society that are wrong in my view - such as the need to stick to roles that are harmful and restrictive, especially if they are considered intimate parts of someone's personality. It is one thing to conform to a professional role for eight hours to do your job effectively, it is another entirely to Be A Man The Way Society Intended for every waking hour of your life so as to support that end of societal roles.
That he is a psychologist in the Freudian tradition was no surprise to find out, but it makes him even less credible in my eyes. No support, no evidence, no trials. Experience, sure, but I would have really liked more facts rather than anecdotes from his work day.

Puh... etwas eindimensional gedacht und argumentiert... allerdings interessante Denkanstöße
