A Witch's Feast

Rate this book
There are new rules governing the country--namely, no magic. But Fiona Forzese has never been good with rules...

After a ghostly army terrorized Boston, the Ranulf family say they'll help Fiona and her classmates finish up junior year. They say their old Virginia plantation is a safe haven. All Fiona and her secret coven have to to do is show up to a few math and English classes.

It should be a perfect solution. And it would be, if the Ranulfs weren't members of a witch-hunting cult.

As Fiona digs deeper into the Ranulf's past, she learns a dark truth that shocks her to her core. But it isn't only the Ranulfs who are keeping secrets, and as the witch-hunting cult closes in, Fiona is forced to confront the demons of her own past.

I am so glad the author asked me to review this early, thank you so much for the offer. I am so grateful she did! ^^

First things first, isn't the cover worth dying for? I am not sure who the cover is meant to be? Fiona? Whoever it is, I loved it to bits!!!!

This book was far more interesting than the first one, the attack in Boston affects everyone in some way or another and you see the characters adapt, develop and grow. I like reading from Jack's POV this time, it brought a lot more action and meaning to the plot. A Witch's Feast starts off where the first book ended, with the school being burnt down, classmates dying. Then Munroe comes to the rescue and things change drastically.

There are more characters introduced, Tobia's gains more power (how you may ask? You will have to read the book for that), Thomas and Oswald are trapped and tortured, Celia has gone mental (not sure how that happened? Is she really mental? Or only acting?) and loads more. All this action and drama kept me on my toes at all times, it is disappointing what happens to Marianna :( but she makes it the end.

I am not sure who I liked more this time; Tobias, Thomas, Oswald or Jack. It is hard as you see a side of Jack you don't get to see in the first book (he is more of a central character in this book).I would probably say Thomas, I loved his bravery, courage, how he tried to stay strong.

I received this book early from the Authors – and how honored I am to have been able to review this amazing piece.
In book two of this amazing series, we follow Fiona, Tobias and the gang as they try and pick up the pieces from a Harvester-ravaged Boston. The self-proclaimed savior of mankind, Munroe – kindly offers her family home to the surviving junior class to finish out the school year.
Fiona soon learns how dangerous this turns out to be.
Munroe’s mother hides sinister secrets behind closed doors of their large mansion, along with putrid cucumber soup. Fiona realizes that to save herself and her coven, she will have to investigate just what happens when nobody is watching. But not everyone is solely focused on the going’s on at the Ranulf mansion. Tobias has his own mission, and he will stop at nothing to achieve it, but how much danger can he keep putting Fiona in before he gets her or even himself killed? From monster dopplegangers, to vicious witch-hunters and secrets within their own coven, Boston’s events now seemed like just a nightmare, now more than ever every single one of them is tested.

There’s something so raw and gritty about this series that makes it completely unique to other novels of the Young Adult type, with a good mix of suspense, horror and of course – the blooming romance.

There were super important things that were brought up in the book and there was absolutely nothing further to explain them or how they related to the story. Fiona’s dad? The fury and how she looked so similar? Wanted to tear my hair out. True story. I need these answers, need like I need oxygen and chocolate and more money to buy more books and more shelves so that all the books that currently don’t fit in shelves, can then fit in shelves. The point is that I need these answers.

But that’s it. This book was otherwise perfect for me. I got more blood, guts and violence. I got more diversity in the stories told, which were from many different accounts of all the characters spread over different worlds. I fell more in love with Alan (and I still think he needs his own novel series) and I can believe every single character as though they weren’t pieces of anyone’s imagination.

Very much enjoyed this book, no lie.
Shit gets real in this installment! Ok, I guess it got real in the first one too, but this real shit was even realer! Each character's storyline was action-packed and page-turning, and though I swear to god I am a mature and sophisticated lady, Tobias and Jack are totes swoonworthy. Thomas might be more my type though. I'll have to think about that.

I received my copy of A Witch’s Feast from the author.

The writing team of C.N. Crawford has quickly become new favourite YA/urban fantasy/paranormal authors. The second book in the Memento Mori Witch Series is just as fantastic at the first! Without giving away the plot of this latest installment, the story picks up three days after the end of the first book. Boston is still under tight lockdown after the “terrorist” attack. The young witches that were able to get back to Boston from Maremount are whisked off with a few other classmates to the plantation home of Senator Ranulf to ensure their safety; however more evil is afoot as they are now under the “protection” of leaders of a blood cult endowed with a government sanction. Thomas and Celia are still trapped in Maremount but are fighting hard to escape and make their way back to Boston with the help of Tobias’ old friend Oswald. Nothing is as it seems in Maremount or in New England.

Jack is back, sexy and evil, but the authors are successfully able to build sympathy for his character all the while making us detest him. Can someone be truly evil if they have good intentions? Makes us wonder if Jack and Tobias are not flip sides of the same coin. The imagery is as incredible as the first novel, especially the details of the angel statuary in the boxwood labyrinth heading to the Ranulf family crypt. The Throcknell castle with their faerie parties are juxtaposed with the oppressive squalor of the dungeons, and Asmodeus’ lair reminds me of a scene from Harry Potter.
Chapters are told from the perspective of various characters: Tobias, Fiona, Thomas, Jack and Celia, which is crucial since the action is split between New England and Maremount. I love stories told from varying perspectives and this one was especially easy since the chapters were clearly marked with the character’s name. These opportunities to see a little further into the individual character allowed two alarming facts to be learned about Thomas’ mother and Fiona’s father which I am certain will play a crucial role in the third installment.

Once again historical references to Puritans, the Salem witch trials, Jamestown, the founding fathers, slavery, even the Bubonic plague weave in and out the story creating both real and fanciful points of contact.
This series really does have it all. History, horror, possible romance, intellect, witchcraft, shapeshifting and succubii, and plenty of action. So excited to see where the rest of the series and the novelettes take us.

In ‘A Witch’s Feast’ we meet the characters only a view days after were we left them in the first book. The school in Boston is burned and classmates have died. Thomas and Celia are still trapped in Maremount and are working hard on finding a way back to Boston.
Meanwhile Fiona and her classmates are trying to finish high school with the so called protection of the Ranulf family. But nothing is the way it seems and there are still a lot of secrets.

This book was definitely just as intriguing and fascinating to read as the first one. There is a lot going on in this book and it never gets boring. What I loved the most about this book was the way it was written through different point of views. We read the book through the eyes of Tobias, Fiona, Thomas, Jack and Celia. This sounds like a lot and maybe even too much.. But I definitely loved reading this book from so many different eyes. It just really fit the story.

One of the most interesting parts of this book for me, was definitely getting to know Jack a little more. He is still evil but somehow the author was able to also make me like him more and I even felt a little itsy bitsy sympathy for him.
A lot of secrets and questions I had in the end of book one are revealed in this book, but I also have a lot more questions now for the third book. A little frustrating to be honest. So now I have to wait patiently for book three.. and I’m not a very patient person! Sigh…

So what can I do to make the wait a little easier.. Yep I ordered the beautiful looking paperback versions of this series. I mean, have you looked at those covers? I love them and I can’t wait to have them standing on my shelves.

The Memento Mori series really is an awesome fantasy series and I really recommend it to other fantasy readers. This isn’t a standalone novel though, so you really just have to read the first book ‘The Witching Elm’ first.. not a bad thing.. I promise! ;)

The Story Gets Better in This Second Episode

I thought the first book had trouble including all the different plotlines, but in this second book, the plotlines start to become understandable (although there are even more plotlines!). Christine and Nick Crawford, the couple who also write together as "C. N. Crawford " really hit their stride in this second volume. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I wasn't into the first book of this series as much as I normally am with all of Crawford's books, but this series has really picked up. I really think it was just me that was having a hard time getting into it. Either way I loved it. I love getting to see the story for all the different perspectives of the characters. I can't wait to see where they end up in the next book.

Loved it

This second book was so much better than the first. Where the first laid a lot of ground work for the world and story building, this second one drop kicks you right into the action.
I really can’t wait to see where the next one goes!

While not as good as other series by these authors (IMHO) this is still a good story. It seems a little disjointed to me and this specific book needed some editing for typos. However, I did enjoy it.

I have enjoyed reading this series. I found myself psychoanalyzing the relationship between the heroine and hero. I wanted them to be honest with each other. Their insecurities kept them from being totally honest. I was so engrossed I read the last book of this series in one morning!

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Why I read it: Earlier this year I read and reviewed the first book in the series. It was an intriguing read, and I wanted to continue the story; so when the authors asked if I would like to review this, of course I said yes!

Plot: In the aftermath of the attacks in Boston, life must go on. The school is split, and we follow Fiona, Tobias and their classmates to their new home in a private mansion. Thomas is still trapped in Maremount (the parallel world to Boston), which is plagued by the...well...plague, as he desperately tries to return home, but also save the people of the town from illness.

My Thoughts: This world is so fun. Witches! Witches who shouldn't be using witchcraft because they're in witch-hunters territory, but they do anyway! At least no one will be burned at the stake...wait...wait...that is a thing that could happen :o stress!

There are a few unbelievable things that take place. I doubt if my boarding school burned down, that we'd have been shipped to the house of the parents of one of the students to continue our education; but that's what fantasy and fiction is for right? So I put my reservations about that aside, and just went with it.

This time round we get multiple POVs from Tobias, Fiona, Jack and Thomas. I didn't like Jack in the last book, but I did enjoy reading about him now that we know what he is. His fixation on Fiona is totally creepy though, such a stalker. It made me rather uncomfortable because it's like he feels she is his to own. Yuck.

Tobias was super weird this time round. I felt like his change in power wasn't explained properly, though you get the gist of it. I would have liked to have read a bit more about the how and the why with that. Because of his weirdness, I felt a bit detached from him - though it will be interesting to see what happens in the next instalment, because it ended in an interesting place for him (and everyone, really).

Fiona was again my favourite, she's pro-active and should probably think more before she acts, but that's what I like about her. There was some romance elements to her relationship with Tobias, but I dutifully ignored them ;) And Thomas still being in Maremount was also interesting, he's in a bit of a pickle, but reading his POV was also fun (I think he made me the most stressed lol)

There's lots of action in this one, from the creepy cultish parents whose house they are stuck in, to trying to escape from Maremount back to Boston. The pace is good too; there wasn't as much jumping from one thing to another this time, though it did feel like there were a couple of gaps (like with Tobias's power) but they're pretty minimal and it felt cohesive. The idea of parallel worlds, and one breaking into the other is one I love; there's just so much potential in it.

I'm really looking forward to finding out what happens next!

In Brief: A great second look at the Memento Mori Witch series. This book was stronger than the first, so I can just imagine how good the next one will be!

Almost a year ago, I took part in the book tour for The Witching Elm by C.N. Crawford. I was excited when the author reach out to me directly to review book two in The Memento Mori Series. I snatched up the opportunity to review A Witch's Feast to continue to story of Toby and his friends.
Book two picks up right where book one left off. Toby and his friends are escaping Boston for the relative safety of the New England countryside. For me personally, I wish that there had been more of a recap of the events in book one at the start. I have a shoddy memory and The Witching Elm was the second book I read in 2015 so I was really stretching myself to recall the all the key events.

That's not to say I didn't enjoy A Witch's Feast. There is a lot of action and a crazy, creepy cult. More political maneuverings and commentary about who has the right to wield the power of magic. There are some big topics up for discussion in this book and the kids in the story don't take them lightly.
Just like book one, book two ends with a cliffhanger. I'm not sure what is next for Toby, Fiona and Thomas, but I hope they come out of their next adventure alive with their sense of humor in tact.

First I want to start with the cover, I'm guessing that must be Fiona.... I love it! I had many thoughts while reading this book like the author's must love history and finally Celia gets her own chapter (until chapter 49) and OMG Jack is still alive! I also had many question.... like what happened with Fiona's dad? And what is the price Tobias will have to pay for doing what he did to become more powerful? Some of my questions were answered and some were not so I will have to wait and hope I get more answers on the next book.

As I got to know the characters more I began to love them all even Fiona, Celia and Munroe. I can't decide who I like better between Jack and Tobias though because they are pretty similar and are both in love with Fiona. I loved how the chapters switched between characters, I think that helped me get to know and love them all even more. I would have liked a chapter or two for Munroe though.

All I can say is wow this story is so exciting! If you're a fan of fantasy/paranormal and looking for a book full of magic and a little bit of mystery then I recommend A Witch's Feast... but first read The Witching Elm!

I received a free review copy of A Witch's Feast from the authors.

This book takes Tobias, Fiona and their friends from Boston to a plantation in Virginia - to be safe; a safe haven if it weren't for the witch-hunting cult.

With A Witch's Feast, C. N. Crawford have created a thrilling story with plot lines mainly in Virginia and Maremount. In this second instalment of the Memento Mori Series, the protagonists have to stand against quite different adversaries. The story comprises a variety of characters with sufficient depth and a pretty good combination of fast-paced and slower-paced interactions. A fight for survival leads to unanticipated alliances and adversaries. I had a good time reading A Witch's Feast - it is an enjoyable read with some references to Salem and the Witch Trials. [Salem is well worth visiting, be sure to visit the Salem Witch Museum!]. The story has some interesting turns and is cleverly elaborated, making it harder to put away as the adventure proceeds.

This is for you if you like stories about witches, (urban) fantasy, stubborn protagonists and clever turns.

The second book in a compelling series - to read again.

Recommended.

A fantastic sequel that exceeds the original, the story is richer and more complex, the mood is darker and more ominous making the stakes feel even higher, the characters are deeper, and each is more fully realized. You'll rush along joining old and new faces (my favorite is Thomas) in a recovering Boston, a sinister Virgina plantation, and though the towers rising above the plague-stricken Maremount. A wonderful, dark, and fast-paced YA read. Well worth your time. I can't wait for the next.

(Oh! Wonderful cover design as well.)

I received this book early in exchange for a review* I loved the first book, The Witching Elm, and loved this one as well. It has magic, a little bit of gore, a paralell world, a brewing war, and so much more. Many books after so much being in a genre repeat themselves and each other, but this series is something completely new and original, and I would recommend it to any fansof the supernatural, magic, witches, or anything unusual.

An enjoyable sequel. Lots of new twists and turns added to the story. The book provides more background on some of the major characters and the different "factions." It ends with multiple cliffhangers setting up the third book.
