"All beginnings require that you unlock new doors."--Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav
In this short and inspiring text, Rabbi David J. Wolpe addresses all who seek to enlarge the spiritual side of their lives. For those considering a return to the faith of their forebears, for those drawn to conversion, Why Be Jewish? is a learned, graceful, and welcoming introduction beckoning readers into the heart of this venerable and enduring religion.
This was a heartfelt and well written short book in to the heart and soul of Judaism and living a Jewish life.
It is written in an accessible, lucid and personal style, which ensures its an enjoyable read and that you take it all in.
It helped me reconnect with my Judaism and why I'm proud to be Jewish and part of a great people, who have survived and thrived against all odds.
I would highly recommend this book for those looking to understand the essence of Judaism, those looking to reconnect with their Jewish life and those considering converting to Judaism.
The first book I read on my conversion journey, this very short discussion of Judaism told me things about it I never, ever knew and in a few short Chicago 'L' rides reading it, pretty much changed my worldview. When I finished this book, I knew inside I was beginning to answer the question why I wanted to be a Jew, myself. For anyone looking for a brief introduction to Judaism or beginning to consider becoming a Jew-By-Choice, I can't recommend this book highly enough.
This is a very good introduction to Judaism. Written for someone who is considering becoming Jewish it divides the chapters into three topics: To Grow in Soul, To Join a People, To Seek G-d. The language is poetic, elevating, soaring. It has the best definition of spirituality that I have ever read. This is a good book for someone considering conversion or for an interfaith discussion group or for people who feel they haven't learned enough in Hebrew School.
Rabbi Wolpe's writing emanates irresistible charm that is always the mark of one enamored of their subject matter. Yes, he cherry-picks examples that support his points while gracefully side-stepping the ones that contradict them. But strict objectivity is not the goal here, promotion is. And in that he succeeds marvelously. This is Judaism 101 and I mean that in the best way possible.
Beautiful and to the point. Large sweeping subjects that are well developed but extremely concise. Beautiful poetry mixes well with explanations of history and reasoning.
Beautifully written. I felt like I learned a lot about the history of the religion and about myself while I was understanding and putting into words the important things about Judaism in my life.
I really like this book as an introduction to the spirit of Judaism. It makes me even more eager than before to learn more about Jewish belief and practice.
