Years ago I was prescribed a statin drug due to my high cholesterol. Recently I found a new family physician who told me to immediately stop the statin and read this book. My new doctor had done comprehensive testing on my thyroid (for the first time in my life) and the results were that I suffer from hypothyroidism - which can drive up your cholesterol. So, the statin was actually masking the problem - not treating it.
The statin family of drugs, including Crestor and Lipitor (as well as the simvastatin and atorvastatin that had been prescribed for my husband and me), are among the most profitable (and hence most widely advertised) drugs by Big Pharma. Some of the side effects of statin drugs noted in the book include ALS or ALS-like symptoms, aneurysm, Bell's Palsy, cancers, dementia, depression, heart failure, hypertension, kidney damage, memory loss, neuropathy and... thyroid disorders!
While the book provides many reasons to stop statin drugs, it also educated me about the over-hyping of high cholesterol, contributing factors to my thyroid problem, how to better think about preventing heart issues and much more.
The book was a really easy read - not a lot of confusing medical jargon; more like a friend who has an area of expertise was sharing some learnings with me.
I am writing a thank-you note to my doctor today for recommending this book.
