A sweeping epic saga of adultery, murder, forbidden love and a whole host of other elements.
When Maddie March is split up from her little friend Jenny Wren and taken from the local orphanage by Harriet Trowbridge and taken to live at Few Farm with her, Mr. Frank, his son Michael and Harriet's son Nick a whole chain of events is set in motion.
Family secrets are brought to the fore when all things come to a head and the family are in danger of losing their farm when the cattle contract Foot and mouth disease but Maddie unexpectedly saves the day with her proposal to go into tulip cultivation.
Things are running smoothly but the simmering family problems are still seething below the surface and is set to blow the happy household apart.
But there is another snag on the way, Maddie is pregnant by Michael and this in turn causes jealousy and resentment from Nick who had ideas of Maddie being his.
Nick's obsession and love for Maddie is unhealthy though and ultimately leads to devastation and tragedy.
Can the rag tag family who have been brought together through circumstances survive what is to come?
Or will the "Tulip girl" lose the home and life she has managed to create?
An enjoyable historical / period novel that is so much more than just that appellation, it has so many ingredients to make this more than a run of the mill romance or historical drama, its exciting and a real page turner and you feel such empathy for the characters as the author has done a wonderful job on both the storyline and people involved.
Exciting and definitely well worth reading.

I found this an excellent look at a farm family growing tulips in the south of England.

During World War 2 the tulip growers were ordered not to grow food crops instead. The reason was that tulip bulbs were light and valuable, and Britain could send them to Canada in trade for food and other goods - no point sending out empty ships.

The characters are varied and sympathetic, and include a young girl telling this tale from her viewpoint and living through the war. I can recommend this read.

Surprisingly, I enjoyed it more, than I have expected. The beginning was slow and dull, but then I found myself gripping the book tightly and gulping every word. It was sort of predictable and Maddie, the main character was very childish for her age. I knew what is about to happen even before the author knew what is gonna happen herself, I think.

I think the prologue slightly spoiled the book as I then read throughout anxious that something bad was going to happen. Infact, not everything does go wrong that could, so it's not as depressing as I was coming to expect. The outcome is not quite as expected, but the detective work is entertaining and the story does make you want to read on.

An easy to read book. Had me turning the pages towards the end to find out what would happen next. A wide range of characters and set in the countryside. I learned a lot about Tulips. The author has obviously done her research. I am going to read some more of her books

Quick easy read. Some sadness, mystery, lots of drama and romance, as well. I learned about what life was like in the UK, and what farmers did to use their land. Ms Dickinson's book are entertaining and interesting.

📚

It is not just a story of a child left on an orphanage doorstep but a twisting drama involving abandonment, mystery, and murder. I loved this book. I struggled with some of the relationships though. The cruel vitriolic housekeeper was one thing, but a father marrying his sons pregnant girlfriend, albeit to protect her, left me a little uncomfortable.
But I loved it 5/5 for me.
