This story centers around Ruby and Dex. Ruby has decided to come "home" to where her foster brother (Ty) lives and Dex is not only a close friend of his but also has his own past to recover and cope with. They are immediately attracted to each other but fight it, not only are each of them highly combustible on their own but together could prove to be volatile. I think of them as a firework... it could be beautiful but really it's just an explosion; it's quick, dangerous and you could get injured if not careful.
The author, Jaye CoxJaye Cox, immediately sucks you into their world. Every character is very well developed, the dialogue sounds very natural and I could close my eyes and picture being there with everyone. Hanging out at their local pub Paulies and listening to the music or maybe having my next tattoo done by Dex... or having Pizza night at Jash and Ruby's house with Joe, Sam, Romeo, Ty and the rest of the gang. She creates these characters and brings them to life so much that you are drawn in and your heart is involved. You feel their pain and happiness, I felt like reaching into the story and wanting to hug and comfort each one and then cheer them on when good things happen.
But this story of Dex and Ruby will taken you on an emotional ride and I will say when I finished the book this morning I had to put an ice pack on my eyes because I found myself sobbing into a pillow. I can say that of the literally HUNDREDS or more of books I have read, there are probably only 6 that I know will stay with me and make me think of them long after I finished, the kind of book that becomes part of your soul. This is one of those books, and I will NEVER forget it. I can honestly say that "Under the surface" got under my skin. I HIGHLY recommend this book and even though it's book 2 in the Love is Not Enough series it can be enjoyed as a stand alone.... I know I will read it again, and again, etc
Thank You Jaye Cox for creating such an amazing story with realistic cast of characters that you gave life to. Words are not enough to describe how much I absolutely LOVED this book, I'm only hoping this review did your work justice.
