This book is a snapshot of the United States of America in the year 1846.
I know that sounds kind of generic, I mean what was the United States of America in the year 1846?

It was a nation ready to cut loose, and the world knew it.
It was also the year that The Smithsonian Institution was formed and launched and this is their record too.
This book is a little gem and I particularly enjoyed the recalling of the nascent arts scene in America.
I mean look at the influence on the world now from the artists that came out of this country.

Scholarly perspective out of date, but still very worthwhile.
