Long Time Waiting

Rate this book
Dear Author,
We’ve been best friends since the day we met in kindergarten. I’ve been in love with him forever, but he’s straight— as evidenced by the scads of girls he’s dated. I finally worked up the nerve to not only come out to him our senior year of high school but also tell him how I felt for him. As I expected, he told me that he’d be my best friend no matter what but that he was straight and didn’t feel the same way. I was heartbroken but knew that I had to suck it up if I wanted us to remain friends. I stayed single for the rest of high school while he dated every girl around. Now we are rooming together in college and I’m doing my best to get over him and move on. Unfortunately, every time I meet someone or date someone new, he thwarts my plans. I don’t even want to talk about the time he walked in on me and my new guy about to get down and dirty— let’s just say he was NOT happy. I don’t understand! If I didn’t know better, I’d say he was jealous. But he’s straight… isn’t he?

Photo Description:
Two young men, one with dark brown hair (on the left) the other with sandy brown hair (on the right), are kissing, both with looks of surprise. The man on the right has a hand across the other’s cheek, blocking the kiss from anyone looking.

My apologies to the author, but I found this story immensely frustrating.

I am a sucker for best-friends-to-lovers stories, but this was the M/M version of Saved by the Bell.

Chris and Dale are freshmen in college, but the story read like high school melodrama central.

Dale (the straight one) blows hot and cold, and interrupts every time Chris gets with a guy. Chris whines but never stands up for himself.

There were too many secondary characters and side stories, none of which went anywhere. Chris's friend Kiyoshi sort of took over the story, but not in a good way. He was too snarky and negative.

We got ten pages of the guys doing role playing (D&D, I believe). Weirdly random.

The secondary plot regarding Tommy was what bugged me most. It was thrown in there with no resolution. I couldn't figure out how old Tommy was (8? 13?). It almost felt like the author included it in case she writes a sequel.

I never believed the GFY and the epilogue was kind of lame.

Two stars because the author stayed true to the prompt.

Well, that was underwhelming. I might cry in frustration.

I'm torn on this one. The story was sweet enough, but it felt like too much going on. I didn't get why Chris never complained or even confronted Dale about his very obvious cockblocking. I thought the side stories about Tommy, and about Kyoshi and Adam were obvious sequel bait, and the actual details of the D&D game were just bizarre and unneeded. Show them playing and goofing off, sure, fantastic, I'm an old D&D player, but several pages of a campaign just dragged me out of the story.

And then the epilogue,

Even though this story sounded a lot like a few other gay guy and straight best friend go to college and straight guys is jealous and figures out he wants his gay best friend story, it was still good. But I hate stories that have other stuff in them but don't give you a conclusion on them. Such as what happened to Tommy? Will Adam and Kiyoshi ever get together?

That had a LOT of stuff going on. I know it's all about Chris and Dale's freshman year in college, but there was just so much extra...Bobby, Tommy, Nate, Adam -- I think all but maybe Adam could've been cut without a big change in the story. Still, not a bad story.

This story is a slow build as Chris and Dale work on their feelings and communication skills. They also appear to be approaching things in a smart way as they move forward together.

This exact story has been told her earlier this summer. Two high school friends go off to college together, one straight and one gay. The straight one gets angry every time he sees his gay friend with another guy, until he realizes he's gay too and they become a couple.
That earlier story, if memory serves, was better. This one meanders and takes forever to get to the conclusion. There are also irrelevant distracting secondary issues going on in this story.
I just read the other reviews and people mentioned the lengthy role playing game. I was skimming already at that point so I just skimmed faster there.

Ha, Chip 'n' Dale go to College!!

A fun story about besties Chris aka Chip and Dale who are roommates at College.
I liked Chris' unrequited feelings for Dale (who knows) but what was amusing was Dale's reactions to Chris dating - that river, she is denial!
Liked Yoshi, Adam and Nate - lots more stories there!
Enjoyable slow burn, hot on flirting and feelings.

10.9.16 reread : as before, a fun read. Though Chris/Chip read more needy this time but still a light, fun coming of age/realisation read.

2.5 stars rounded up. Cute enough but Dale was immensely frustrating. And what's with the role playing having such a huge part in the story? It was too detailed and unnecessarily so.

Thanks to the author for participating in the LOR event.

We have one character how is whiny (and cries A LOT!) and plays the victim role and the other MC who is a hetero-slut suddenly gay because ... he's jealous?? IDK...

I appreciate the author taking part in the series, but this book just did not do it for me.
