Extensively researched, but poorly written, not proofread, and badly organized
The section on Rune meanings is so brief as to be miniscule. The bulk of the book is taken up with explanations of the mindset of the Norse peoples who developed this form of divination. While it is necessary to understand their worldview and their mythologies to effectively read the runes, I don't think it is unreasonable to expect more of the book to be dedicated to those meanings.
The author's prose style is so eccentric as to leave one wondering whether English is her first language. Complicating this is an absence of proofreading, with obvious cases of words omitted, and herds of grammatical errors.
Poor organization results in an extensive discussion of the history of runes placed before the reader reaches the section labeled "History."
It's really a shame that the book's many flaws leave it almost unreadable. Skip it, and keep looking.
Runes, by Larissa McDermott is a very informative book. I am a Rune user. To know more about the history of this divination tool is wonderful. What this book lacks is a visual of each Rune description/meaning to use as a reference while learning each Rune, or looking up a Rune or Rune draw while using Runes.. Otherwise, this is an excellent, well researched book of information and history.
