About The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey

Have you ever stopped to think about how your debt is affecting your life? About the stress (and all the stress related health problems, like high blood pressure, headaches, irritability, and sleep problems) it causes, the uncertainty and fear it induces, the prison it builds around you? Have you ever thought about the life you could live if you had no debt?
Financial independence and a debt-free life are attainable for anyone, no matter your income or amount of debt. All you need is a detailed plan, one vetted by someone with the expertise and experience to guide you through. Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover is such a plan and has helped thousands of people pay off millions of dollars of debt, save for retirement, and live a life of freedom that only those with real financial independence can hope to experience. He begins by outlining various myths that tend to hold people back and keep them mired in a cycle of debt. He then shows readers how to build an emergency savings fund. Next, he guides participants through the steps required to methodically eliminate their debts. Finally, he shows readers how to build their personal wealth so that they never have to worry about going into debt again.

If followed diligently, Ramsey promises that his Total Money Makeover program will work the same wonders for you that it did for him. It will propel you from financial struggles and perceived helplessness to freedom and control. You’ll learn habits that will serve you over a lifetime, and become acquainted with the myths and shortfalls that have been a disservice to you in the past. You’ll systematically pay off debt, build savings, put aside funds for retirement, and increase your personal wealth. This program will empower you to get your financial house in order, once and for all.

I listened to this as an audiobook. There were aspects I really like (and already follow). Ramsey has a great plan to help people eliminate debt and establish savings. What I don’t like is his very Christian and white-privilege viewpoints. I don’t really think he takes into account all the variables that could cause people to struggle financially and how his “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” financial plan will only work for some. I notice the book was published in 2015, so I’m wondering what part of the country he lives in? He talks about joint incomes being $80k and houses costing $150k. This is definitely not my family’s reality living on the west coast. My idea is to pick and choose his principles that best apply to my family, including setting a better budget, continuing to work on our debt, saving for emergencies and our future.

Great philosophy, not an awesome book, but it gives you the basics. I recommend as an audiobook. Not too long and it’s a bit more inspiring that way. Don’t be fooled by my review of the book, I’m a huge Ramsey fan and believer. Follow up this book of basics with the podcast!
