Beautifully illustrated, this is a story about a little girl that wants to keep just one pumpkin to make a jack-o-lantern with. Before the story ends, she learns the importance of honesty and sees a good example in her father.

Ages: 3 - 10

Cleanliness: a girl is dishonest and hides a pumpkin but feels bad after.

Imagine growing pumpkins, and not being able to keep one for a jack-o'-lantern.

That's Hattie's dilemma when her father needs to sell every single pumpkin. Luckily, the Pumpkin Man comes through with a little surprise for Hattie. I loved the beautiful watercolors by Laura Kelly.

Read it again! Read it again!
There is a commotion in front of the store, Hattie slips in to see what it is all about. Everyone is looking at a pumpkin carved to look like a face that has been hollowed out and a candle set inside. Hattie's family raises pumpkins and now all she can think about is making her own Jack o' Lantern! The pumpkin man comes and buys alllll the pumpkins except the one the family has reserved for Ma's Special Blue Ribbon Pies. When the pumpkin man learns of Hattie's secret wish to make a Jack-o- Lantern, he offers her the pumpkin that he has already cut a pie shaped piece out of, so that he could check the quality of the pumpkin. Hattie is so thrilled! The cut that the pumpkin man made becomes the jack-o-lantern's nose! We also loved that there is a recipe for Ma's Blue-Ribbon Pie in the back of the book , and a suggestion for pumpkin puree on top of buttered bread with salt and pepper.

It got me in the mood to make a jack-o-lantern. :) And, I guess it kind of has a good lesson about honesty...

Not bad. I kind of enjoyed this story. I would read it to a child. I'm sure they'd love it!
