Gideon Sinclair, an immortal, shape-shifting soldier, defies the ancient gods he serves, risking his existence and the future of the mortal world, when he saves the life of the woman he was sworn to kill: Dr. Megan Carter.
For centuries he's fought for justice and balance in the eternal struggle between good and evil. Gideon challenges destiny and the forces aligning against her, but when Meg becomes more than a mission, will he be able to accept the healing love she offers or will their enemies and the demons of his past be their undoing?
Meg's accidental contact with an artifact sacred to the Goddess Isis thrusts her into the midst of a centuries old battle between two rival gods, and makes her the target of a crazed magician bent on unlocking the secrets of immortality. With nowhere to turn and no one to trust, she puts her life in the hands of the lethal, enigmatic Gideon, and is drawn into his dark world. She can't resist the passionate desire he stirs, but will she pay the ultimate price when she falls for a man who no longer has a heart?

4.5stars really This origin story has a great opening action piece solidifying the introduction of Gideon Sinclair – warrior champion of justice to the tribunal that has a directive to assassinate Dr. Megan Carter and avoid renewing hostilities in the ongoing war between the Gods. As the designated hottie du jour Gideon hits all the protective alpha male buttons when he decides something is “off” about his latest assignment that will leave Meg dead. Meg is bewildered when she finds herself feeling very much like Sarah Connor in the Terminator movies when she has to face new knowledge that the world she lives in isn’t the world she thought she lived in. Immortals, Mages, Zombies, Vampires and Shifters are among the lifeforms encountered and alluded to but somehow come off as a cohesive world rather than one that is over-full with gimmicks. As Gideon and Meg try to determine who planted the evidence against Meg and why they also take time to fall hard for each other. I liked the chemistry of Gideon and Meg separately and together and felt the secondary characters were also interesting as they supported and furthered the story. While it’s nothing new for the die-hard paranormal/urban fantasy reader the smooth writing and engaging, strongly drawn & multi-layered characters do open the hallowed gates to a new contributor and feel fresh. The mythological twist adds a fun layer to this easy to get into paranormal romance/suspense read with excellent plotting and pacing.
What a messed-up situation: Unknowingly Meg gets into contact with a godly artifact, starts to develop strange abilities and gets between the lines of a thousands of years old feud between the gods. Gideon, an immortal shapeshifter, is called upon to kill her to prevent the end of the world.
But the better Gideon gets to know Meg, the more he starts to doubt his mission. he becomes her protector and tries, in a race against time, to find a way for Meg to lose her new abilities again without dying in the process. Preferable the world gets rescued without him having to kill Meg. She, on the other hand, tries to control her new powers as well as her growing ...fondness of the charismatic Gideon - with little success.
Ursula Bauer was smart enough to forgo easy solutions in this story. The story keeps the balance between rollercoaster action and character growth. How does one stay human when able to wield inhuman powers? Does one's own love count more than the rest of the world? The questions reach farther than the usual duty-contra-love problem. The bad guy, who kicked lose the whole mess, isn't painted black or white either. And even the end isn't instant-soup like, but shows some fascettes.
Great read, action-oriented paranormal romance. The book has page turning action, interesting characters, a complex background and lots of sexual tension.
The heroine is drawn into a world where all the 'mythological' pantheons exist side-by-side. That world exists in a 'Cold War' state where subtle tries for power constantly ripple below the relatively peaceful surface. The heroine is caught in one of those ripples...
The hero is sent to kill her to protect the balance of power. He becomes suspicious that someone has muddied the situation and decides to keep her alive.
My favorite part? Heroine: Isn't there some kind of guidelines about all this I could read? Hero: Sure, everything from fairy tales to grimoires. Heroine: Isn't there like an abridged edition? Hero: The gods like to keep things sketchy...
There's a sequel due out this fall: Immortal Illusions.
Really good read. There isn't anything especially new here for long time paranormal readers, but it is very well done and fast paced. The closest comparison I can draw is to early entries in Kenyon's Dark Hunter series. My main gripe was that it included one of my least favorite plot elements . Otherwise, the book is a fun, well-written paranormal romance.
Perhaps a tad on the cliche side, but if you're a fan of paranormal romance you'll enjoy Bauer's writing. And the hottie featured in the cover art. Bauer's writing is engaging and draws the reader into the world -- and granted, there are some details and aspects that I took umbrage with. But on the whole it was a pleasant reading experience and left me wanting to read more of her writing.
