Do you ever ask yourself, "how can I be even more Texan?" Whether you're a freshly minted Texan or one who has been around for a long time, this book'll help you learn to walk, talk, and act a heck of a lot more Texan. Written by the owner of Texas Humor, Jay B. Sauceda, this book helps old timers and newcomers alike increase their Texcellence about a billion percent*.
I received this book in May, but left it to read closer to my trip to Texas. I loved it. I laughed a lot and actually learned a few things. We visit Texas to visit our grandchildren and take them places to learn about history - and have fun. This book will go with us this year so we can share it. While it is a fun read, there is knowledge to be had in it's pages, from regional BBQ differences to the Alamo. This is an easy, funny read for all.
Directed at "foreigners" moving to Texas from elsewhere in the US, this tongue-in-cheek exploration of the Lone Star State's quirky culture parodies a legitimate guidebook. It takes proud ownership of stereotypes, arguing that "Texas...was built on the overwhelming and relentless nature of our pride and attitude."
The book, which is divided into chapters about history, food, traditions, etc., is jammed with fun sundries including an irreverent history of the state, exacting diagrams of cowboy boots, explanations of unique idioms ("you can put boots in an oven, but it don't make 'em biscuits!") and a multipage ink-drawn "Texas driving simulator." Its explanations are equal parts silly and useful.
At times, an insistence on typin' with apostrophes, an unapologetically braggadocious tone, and "quotes" from stock image characters makes the book feel a little overdone, but it's still cute enough for a chuckle, and it's never boring. It's definitely a good "hype book" for anyone moving to Texas from a distant land.
Sauceda is clearly going for light-hearted fun invoking Texans' self-image, cliches, and poking at stereotypes. Humor is a personal and subjective topic, but Sauceda missed his mark in my judgement. Instead of playful fun, the book came over as obnoxious.
