Welcome to Wink, Texas, where sharp-toothed fae lounge in shadows, and humans walk a little faster after dark.
This bundle contains Book #1, Book #2 and Book #3 in the Black Dog Urban Fantasy series.
DOG WITH A BONE
Half-bloods with Thierry's skill set are given two options. They can join the conclave's marshal program, or they can pack their bags. Turn down the job offer, and you've just shredded your residency pass for the mortal realm and booked yourself a one-way ticket to Faerie.
Texas is the only home Thierry has ever known, and she's not going anywhere. Even if it means following in her notorious father's footsteps as a peacekeeper. But pinning on the badge opens her eyes to the fact sometimes fae need protection too, and that sometimes humans are the real monsters.
HEIR OF THE DOG
Thierry Thackeray is having the worst week ever. Her ex is back in town, death omens are camping out on her mother's lawn and her estranged father has gone missing. Then there's the small matter of the High Court requesting her presence in Faerie.
Now the wrong fae has answered her summons, and she's stuck with a not-so-charming prince who offers to fix all her problems...for a price. She can't afford to tell him no, but with her luck, she might not survive saying yes.
LIE DOWN WITH DOGS
With tentative peace established in Faerie, Thierry returns to her job as a conclave marshal in Texas while the countdown to her coronation begins. But what happens in Faerie doesn't always stay in Faerie. A crown wasn't Thierry's only souvenir from her trip. Her new husband, Rook, is scheming again, and this time his plans are invading her dreams.
When her best friend throws a beachside going-away party, Thierry is grateful for the distraction from Rook...and from Shaw. But her presence in Daytona rouses an old evil, one who wants the future queen as the crown jewel of his private collection.
Hailey Edwards writes about questionable applications of otherwise perfectly good magic, the transformative power of love, the family you choose for yourself, and blowing stuff up. Not necessarily all at once. That could get messy.
Human world with a fae world dimension linked by tethers. Heroine half human half fae ( black dog from the wild hunt) raised human by her mom. Her powers are ignighted at puberty where she accidentally feeds of her 5 nearest and dearest friends killing them. This runs as sub text and does not ruin the series by guilt wallowing. 2nd series is a fae subset no longer present in fairy. I loved this set, could not put it down
Why doesn't this bundle have the last book with it? That doesn't make sense to me:/ You have to read all 4 for the story and the third is definitely the weakest of the lot.
I really liked and enjoyed this series very much! I had a hard time putting it down. Learning about Thiery and Shaw's relationship and how they got through everything was really well written. I also loved learning about her dad and watching their bond grow. I can't wait to read the next series.
I liked the story line and the characters and am looking forward to the next series. I have a co-worker and other friends that like this genre whom I will recommend this series to.
I could not read these books fast enough! Edwards is hands down one of the best authors ever! The characters are engaging and funny. The world is perfectly flushed out, and easy to picture your self in. I will be picking up everything she’s written!!
3.5 stars I first read "Dog Days of Summer" in the Nightshade Anthology and have had the Black Dog series on my to-read list since. So far I'm enjoying the series and Hailey's spin on the Fae.
Even though New Age or Coming of Age stories are not usually something I go for, these didn't really have that vibe to me, since Thierry is pretty mature for her age. But I guess when you kill five of your best friends when you're thirteen, that ages you pretty quickly. Thierry is half fae, and that half feeds by consuming souls. If the runes that seem tattooed to her left hand are glowing green, it's best not to anger her. Or be around her the first time they start glowing, like those friends had the misfortune of learning. But that is really just the beginning of Thierry's story. This book picks up as Thierry is finishing marshal training academy, to be a fae marshal, keeping the peace between different fae, but also keeping humans safe from fae and fae safe from humans. I will say a good chunk of that half a star missing is because there are some big gaps in the story between books, including one case that was super interesting but we never saw the end of because it happened between books. But the story that was there, was amazing. It showed different species of fae in ways that I'd never seen them before, such as the incubus and even The Morrigan, who isn't fae really, but in this series she lives in the Faery Realm and visits the mortal realm (Earth) to devour the bodies of the fae that the marshals have to use lethal force on.
I would recommend this to PNR/UF fans that are looking for something a little different than the vampire and werewolf books out there. Don't get me wrong, I love those as much as the next PNR fan, but sometimes you need a palate cleanser, and this is just about the perfect thing for that. Full disclosure: there are some shapeshifters of different kinds in this series, but you barely get and warg (werewolf) time, and that's mostly only if you read the short story that's in another anthology. So I say read, enjoy!! You'll be done with it quicker than you imagined!!
This series must be read in order. This contains three of the first four books of this five book series. The second book Dog Days Of Summer can be found within the Nightshade Anthology. I can't wait to read Old Dog New Tricks which is(sadly) the final book in this riveting series!
Thierry is both half Fae and half Mortal which leaves her with only two options when she turns 18... She can become a Marshal and work on the side of Neutrality for the Conclave or be deported to Faerie to live out the rest of her life. Since her gifts are powerful and destructive in nature she can just live as a Human even if that is what she wanted. Never knowing her father has left a void within her that no one and nothing can fill so she might as well try to earn his respect by following in his footsteps. Besides she has a lot to make up for... Accidentally killing her five Human friends at 13... Destroying her mother's nice normal Human existence with her uncontrollable unnatural powers... Whatever stain her birth has brought upon her father's honor. Is she doing the right thing? Will she be able to pass the tests and become a Marshal? Or will she fail and be deported anyway? Will her mother ever forgive her for being who and what she is? Does she have the right to even hope for a real life? Or are the innocents she killed enough to make her irredeemable? Can she ever be freed of the past sins that haunt her? Or will she continue to spill innocent blood if she loses control?
Kindle Unlimited, basically Dog Eat Dog World: Limited Edition Bundle (Black Dog) an omnibus type book, order given is not necessarily by 'set' or collection but by order blurb said in the one book. Rather hard to figure out rating when there are multiple stories in 1 large collection, as usually don't like all of them the same, so had to figure out whether a 3 or a 4 basically but figured liked it overall 'okay; but not really invested in any.
