Urban history is a well-established and flourishing field of historical research. Author makes an attempt to elucidate the study of urban life in the past as well as the history of urbanization. The book focuses on the importance of comparative and interdisciplinary approaches, and points out the wide variety of disciplines which have been milked by urban historians to enrichen their study (art, literature, cultural studies). Comparative approaches also show the common requirements of cities (resources, access to commercial networks, organizational stability) and the ‘deep continuities’ in the process.

Gives quite a nice, comprehensive analysis of various approaches to urban history; ranging from themes of environmental history, transnational history, questions of identity etc. Through it all the author keeps his focus on his belief that the study of urban history is at its strongest when the relationship between space and place is explored and, in so doing, reveals the roles played by people and what their relationship is to the city as a whole.

A fantastic resource for those new to this expanding field. The historiography is organised thematically, with manageable but thorough further reading suggestions included in the notes for each chapter. Ewen acts as a friendly navigator through what is actually a large and diverse historical field.

Great book to get started in Urban History. Ewen leads you through the basics and introduces some of the relevant concepts that you're likely to encounter when studying Urban History. Well written and a quick read, especially for an informative book!
