I loved this book!! It's everything I love about historical fiction -- a great story, thoroughly developed characters and an honest look into the past. It's heartbreaking and hopeful at the same time. I highly recommend it!
This is an excellent book. It gives you an idea of what women went thru in France with the occupation of Germany in ww2. Only negative I can say is I was really upset about how people can turn to evil so easily and the cruelty to the Jews and women and children is awful. It was a generation of very strong people.
This is the story of two sisters living in Nazi-occupied France during World War II.
The author makes it all very real. The daily effort to stay alive physically despite rationing and destruction and the effort to stay sane despite inhumanity being perpetrated on friends, family, and neighbours. It wasn't a litany of deprivations; each fact fit nicely into a satisfying story. The author didn't tip over the edge into exaggeration for the sake of impact. Let's face it, the acts of the Nazis need no embellishment. Neither did the author paint a fake, overly rosy picture.
I enjoyed the writing style, which had just enough detail to paint a vivid picture without spending pages waxing eloquent over picturesque views. The story clips along, going back and forth between the two sisters during the same timeline. The characters are interesting, complex, and flawed. The ending was satisfying, which is something I really want in a book where I've invested emotionally in the characters and the story. In a few places I was moved to tears.
I thought this was a great read, and I was pleased that the book is longer than most. I'll definitely try to find more titles by this author.
Just a quick review. This book has stayed with me for a long time. The relationship between the sisters is fraught with sisterly things. They don’t truly understand each other until later in the book. It is set during the war and the depictions of how Jewish people were treated was hard to read knowing it really did happen. Nightingale is a beautiful book I highly recommend.
The book is set in the present with a look back at events in France at the beginning of World War II. You are swept into a world of two sisters who are resisting the German army each in her own way. Powerfully emotional as you try to figure out which one is telling the story. Sad as you read of the painful existence brought on by the Germans and how easily freedom was lost or taken. Beautifully written.
