"Fame is no longer the name of the game...it's survival."
"Latter-Day Olympians," Book 5
Tori Karacis is back in L.A., relieved to once again match her passport photo thanks to a tattoo that controls her gargoyle-esque wings. Her newest case doesn't involve gods or an impending apocalypse. It does, however, involve murder.
Jessica Roland's suspicions began when her brothers returned from Egypt eerily different. The terror kicked in with the ritualistic murder of her parents. Her "real" brothers would never have done such a thing, yet their guilt seems indisputable. What could it be? Curse of the Pharaohs? Some kind of brain-eating bacteria?
At the scene of a second attack, there's evidence it's the work of Set, the god of chaos, who should have been locked away a long time ago. And "hello," there's a new arrival. Neith, a warrior goddess who's got the hots for Tori's ex, Nick Armani.
Tori should be cool with that. After all, she's involved with Apollo-"that" Apollo. Still, it's a bit much for Neith to ask for seduction advice! Meanwhile, Set is gaining strength, chaos is leaking all over the place, and L.A. is a powder keg set to blow.
" Relationships heat up and danger mounts. Prepare for chills, thrills and kills when Chaos makes its Hollywood debut."
Lucienne Diver has written snark and suspense with her Vamped YA series featuring a teen fashionista who goes from chic to eek when she wakes up as one of the undead, her Latter-Day Olympians series featuring a heroine who can, quite literally, stop men in their tracks, and her YA suspense novels, Faultlines, The Countdown Club and Disappeared.
The Shadow Girls, her new epic fantasy, which David B. Coe/D.B. Jackson calls, “thrilling, powerful, redemptive, and exquisitely written,” is darker in tone. In a country that’s been at war for six years due to the supposed poisoning of the king of Jucar by his queen from their rival Frizenze, three women are about to rebel against their treatment and, with allies gained along the way, fight to reshape the face of power. The problem is, one of the women is quite mad, and she is in line for the crown. The trilogy continues with The Whisper Kin (2025) and The Illuminated Lands (2026).
The Shadow Girls is close to Lucienne’s heart, touching on feminist and gender issues, LGBTQIA+ themes and climatological fantasy. Both the religion and magical system are based on animism, the spirit in all things, but also the universal spirit, the All. The mageri, the great magic men who raid the anima for the power to create their battlefield constructs to crush their enemies, are killing the land, creating deprivation and disease. And…well, much, much more.

Tori Karacis is back in Lucienne Diver's Blood Hunt! This series has quickly become one of my faves because what's better than seeing Greek mythology and paranormal elements combined? It's the perfect fun kind of read with a sassy heroine to boot!
Tori's winged secret is out, but thanks to living in L.A., basically anything is possible. While trying to keep her relationship with Apollo on the downlow from the press, she's taken on a new case from a young adult girl who believes her brothers have been possessed or something wonky is going on with them, as they killed their parents. She's worried about them and fears for her own life. Naturally, Tori is on the case.
This time, we throw in some Egyptian mythology to jazz things up! Set is our big bad this go around, and it's up to Tori to keep him from rising to power again after he's been imprisoned for years on end. Then there's Neith who's a goddess hunting for the ones who want to raise Set, and she and Tori cross paths. As does Nick, Tori's ex and Neith's new crush. Neith is basically your Egyptian version of Athena, so she's a virgin goddess and all that, and her feelings for Nick are true, and it seems Nick might feel the same. Which is all dandy, as Tori is with Apollo. I was glad to see Tori wasn't rift with jealousy, she even agrees to help Neith with her flirting skills. You know, in between saving the world and all!
The action in this one was intense! So much goes on! And there's so much danger! It was awesome! There are several close calls for Tori and her friends! I loved seeing Hermes again! He's so funny! And since I basically just read this book before his novella, I'll be interested to see what that one is like!
Blood Hunt is a fairly fast paced read and it's all sorts of enjoyable! There's snark, action, steamy romance and just all the goodness one expects from a good paranormal read I will definitely be looking forward to reading Tori's next adventure!
The Greek Gods are still hanging around, no longer with the levels of power they had when they were worshipped. Now, while hiding their identities, they live among the humans and hold down jobs. The interesting aspect of the series has always been the mythology and incorporating these characters and their abilities into world-saving situations as we follow PI Tori Karacis who only recently learned that these gods exist, and that she’s a gorgon.
This story goes further and incorporates Egyptian mythology and even ties in some of the Greek gods as also being Egyptian gods. For example, Apollo says he was Horus. Athena is Neith and Demeter is Isis. So thru them we get to know a little Egyptian mythology as well.
For this story we’ve got Set, the Egyptian god of chaos, bound in chains and doing his best to break free while the rest of the gods shudder to think about that possibility. Twin brothers steal some artifacts from a museum and unintentionally set chaos in motion in a horrible way.
We are introduced to a large number of mostly familiar mythology characters in this action-packed story. And we do get a budding romance and some humor. I like Tori. She never quits no matter how beat up or helpless the situation seems to be. Sometimes that gets a little too heavy-handed. But dang, who wouldn’t like Apollo?
Tori has wings, but she’s no angel. She wants what most gals want: a career, romance, and chocolate croissants. Her heritage, as the descendent of Medusa, has turned her into a freak show. Too bad she’s not still with the circus. Trapeze. No problem. High wire. Cake, compared to the cases she investigates. And, the whole saving the world thing.
Badassery. Primo fight scenes. And, of course, the chocolate croissants. Lucienne Diver brings all the awesomeness of the previous books in this series, plus a few new, yet very old, deities from Greek Mythology mixed with a pinch of Egyptian influence.
The author nailed it with the prologue. From the first page, there was a “true crime” detective feel as the story unraveled. It reminded me of an Agatha Christy mystery, one that I wanted to solve.
The Latter-Day Olympians series is amazing! I want to read it all over again. Check out (FREE prequel) Trickster Blood, (book 1) Bad Blood, (book 2) Crazy in the Blood, (book 3) Rise of the Blood, (book 4) Battle for the Blood, (book 5) Blood Hunt, and don’t forget the short story, The Parlor, in Kicking It.
I wanted to like this book a whole lot more than I did. I got through it, just, but it was so "eh" that I really am struggling to even write a review. I'm not sure if it's because for me, this series has run out of steam. Or the fact that I just wasn't necessarily in the right headspace to read this book. But all in all, I was disappointed.
I think part of the reason I was so driven to read this is because it rounds out the series. But admittedly I struggled with getting through Battle for the Blood. Again, I wanted to love this more than I did. Maybe it was just that my expectations were too high. After all, the premise is brilliant.
As with all reviews of books I'm not ridiculously into, I'll keep this review short. I just struggled to feel attached to the characters and didn't really care what the outcome of the story line was. But it might be amazing for other readers.
