Plows in the 1830s were not suitable for sticky sod, so John Deere invented a smooth, steel plow that worked for many farmers. He continued to press on by creating his own company and building a brand that is well-known today. In this title, young readers can discover more about this inspiring innovator and his company.
The nonfiction book I chose is titled John Deere. It gives basic information about John Deere tractors and how they came about. It is filled with vocabulary words and pictures to help explain. The genre is informational and fits grades 3-6.
The twin text I chose is titled Helpful Tractor by Melinda Melton Crow. It is a fiction book about a tractor that helps people get farm work done.
These two books fit together because the nonfiction book gives information about tractors and the fiction book is a tractor going out and doing the work. Both books are centered around tractors and the work that they are able to do.
As an adult, I like reading children's books as a fun way to get an idea of what I need to know to get started in researching a topic. I could go read a Wikipedia entry or abstract of an article but that seems boring when you have books like this with colour and photos and cool tractors!
Oh, it would also be great for kids who like tractors. lol
