Lost in grief, Prentice Hyde, the much sought after Marquess of Wycroft, salves his broken heart at the Sapphire Club. He wants love, but finding it presents problems of disloyalty to his dead wife.
Widow Desiree Huntington appears at the Sapphire Club, sees Prentice in action, and presents him with a request so seductive, he finds it difficult to refuse.

But Desiree wants all Prentice has to offer—but his heart.
Prompted by her love of history, writer of historical fiction and historical romance, Brita Addams has tromped around old cemeteries and dusty town hall basements for over twenty years as a non-professional genealogist. She’s uncovered some juicy stories about her ancestors that may or may not have already found their way into her writing. For several years, she lectured on genealogy aboard cruise ships, as part of their Enrichment Programs.
Having grown up in blustery Upstate New York, Brita has lived in the sultry South for many years. She has a loving, supportive family, including her native New Orleanian husband, who makes killer gumbo and potato salad. After years in the Big Easy, she and her husband moved to the Frog Capital of the World (yes, that’s a thing,) to be closer to two of their three grown children.

A bit of trivia—Brita pronounces her name, Bree-ta, and not Brit-a, like the famous water filter.
Prentice and Desiree opens with Desiree putting into motion a scheme that ultimately leaves her ruined and eventually married to a much older and oftentimes, cruel man. The story then quickly fast-forwards eleven years to the Sapphire Club, where Desiree is about to entice Lord Decadent into a very sexy and mutually satisfying arrangement where they can further explore their passion for certain elements of the BDSM lifestyle.
When the couple first begin their explorations, Desiree comes across as a strong, sexually confident woman. However, when her real motive for seeking out Prentice is revealed, she comes across as immature and spiteful. There is no denying that she truly enjoys the spankings she receives from Prentice and her passion for him is also genuine. While her marriage was truly horrific, Desiree does not accept her role in her downfall and holds on to her bitterness that her unrealistic fantasy of being rescued from her abusive husband was not fulfilled. Her acceptance for her own actions takes much of the story but much to my frustration, Desiree easily reverts to her old thought patterns.
Thankfully, Prentice is much easier to like. He is genuinely regretful for his past misdeeds and even more remorseful for the unintended consequences of his thoughtless actions. The love of a good woman truly reformed him into a loving and thoughtful husband who deeply mourns her death. While Prentice is once again an active participant at the Sapphire Club, he keeps his emotions out of his interactions with the club's patrons. That is until he and Desiree enter into their arrangement and he unexpectedly finds his heart engaged by the captivating and intriguing widow.
While there is a bit of a BDSM aspect to Prentice and Desiree's sex scenes, it is mostly limited to spankings. Desiree finds it difficult to fully submit to Prentice so their relationship never fully enters into the true D/s realm. Instead it is more of an equal partnership between two people who happen to share the same desires.
While it takes a while to fully warm up to Desiree, Prentice and Desiree is an enjoyable romance with a surprising amount of depth and substance. There is a strong emotional element to the storyline with both characters undergoing a great deal of growth as they not only confront, but overcome the baggage from their pasts. This beautiful love story is an outstanding addition to Brita Addams' Sapphire Club series that fans of historical erotic romances do not want to miss.
I loved this second book even more than the first. This series is growing on me and I hope there are more! The characters are fascinating, the setting is romantic, I just loved everything about this book. Prentice Hyde was a heart breaker. He thought nothing of taking a girl's virginity other than the act itself. He never really invested his heart at all, and that will come to bite him eventually. Desiree wanted to bed the handsome man she had heard so much of from her friends at school. He was supposed to be the prize catch. If she could get him to marry her, that was her plan. She was young but determined and finally got her chance. But when he revealed the fact that he was going into the military, she was dumbstruck. Having been promised to another man, she got caught because the family insisted in a medical exam to prove she was chaste. When she failed, her father wed her to a very much older Mr. Huntington. She spent the next 11 years suffering in misery until his death. She blamed Prentice for not coming to her rescue. Revenge was all she thought of. Prentice became the Marquess of Wycroft. At one ball, he fell in love with Abby and wed her not too long after. While expecting their first child, she became ill and both her and the child perished. Prentice could not overcome his grief. He was broken, and had no idea how, or if he wanted, to live. Two years later, Desiree came to the club to enact her revenge. He did not even remember her. She wanted to give him the misery that she had lived with. She wanted to cause him pain. But she wasn't ready for things to backfire. Or to realize that she was falling for him. Can Desiree go through with her plan? Can Prentice ever find a reason to live again? This book is full of gripping twists and turns and I could not put it down for a second. This is a really wonderful tale of love and loss, hope and despair. Settle in for a sexy read, it is quite a ride.
This was good although not as good as book 1. It seemed to be much spanking and banging without the erotic ingredient (which I did miss). The end seems to be the best part, where they share their love and openly share their needs with each other.
I think I liked this one more than the first! I absolutely fell I love with both these characters. I loved how she was able to help him let go of the past even though she didn't know that's what she was doing. Absolutely wonderful read!!
