Everyone should have a career at which they excel. When it comes to utter failure at being criminals, nobody is better than Laredo and Tombstone Hawkins. Maybe with any luck they can bumble their way into falling in love. Two novellas by award winning author Kathleen Rice Adams in this collection, The Worst Outlaw in the West and Family Tradition.

The Worst Outlaw in the West
Laredo Hawkins has one to redeem his family’s honor by pulling the first successful bank robbery in the Hawkins clan’s long, disappointing history. Spinster Prudence Barrett is desperate to save her family’s bank from her brother’s reckless investments. A chance encounter between the dime-novel bandit and the old maid may set the pair on a path to infamy…if either can find a map.

Family Tradition
Haunted by his kin’s tradition of spectacular failure, bank robber Tombstone Hawkins is honor-bound to prove his family tree produced at least one bad apple. When carnival fortuneteller Pansy Gilchrist tries to help, she accidentally summons a pair of dishonest-to-goodness ghosts. Getting into the spirit of a crime is one thing…but how do you get the spirits out?

Robbing Banks, Stealing Hearts is a novella consisting of two western stories by Kathleen Rice Adams. In The Worst Outlaw in the West, Laredo Hawkins, an unsuccessful outlaw, holds up Prudence Barrett in her family’s bank after she discovers her irresponsible brother, Peter, embezzled money. She turns the robbery to her own advantage and talks Laredo into posing as a Marshall, while robbing an upcoming company payroll in order to solve the problem Peter created, but the plan does not go the way she plans.

In Family Traditions, Tombstone Hawkins, Laredo’s brother, is also having bad luck as a robber. He lets Pansy, a gypsy, read his fortune and the ghosts of both his dead father and Pansy’s dead father appear. They talk their children into robbing a bank, but both have ulterior motives behind this scheme.

Most westerns I read have gun slinging action and saloon brawls, but Kathleen Rice Adams took a different approach when creating Robbing Banks, Stealing Hearts. A very entertaining novella that kept me amused with delightful stories about Laredo and Tombstone Hawkins, brothers who both wanted to restore dishonour to their family’s name by successfully committing crimes to follow their relatives’ examples.

The stories are very well developed and original, considering their lengths. Most characters were fun to be around, and I particularly liked the ghosts’ lively attitudes. The content throughout the book was witty. Although they are different themes, the author made the stories connect to each other nicely with references about some characters and mild romance.

Bumbling bank robbers

Two stories about 2 brothers trying to be bank robbers and failing miserably. Both had problems with their ghostly family "helping them " Not able to do the job without the women in their lives. Laredo and prudence and tombstone and pansy changed their lives to over come the problems I. All their lives. Fun read for a story that brings not only laughs but makes you root for the couples.

Robbing Banks, Stealing Hearts!

I enjoyed this short but very cute story by a favorite author. Stumbling bank robbers, along with a lot of humor and clean romance, makes this a fun book to read. JudyE
