Carl's visit to uppsala proves fruitful when a bishop from the Swedish Church takes Pastor Johansson to task. There will be a wedding at last with or without a declaration of guilt to satisfy Anna-Stina. But the old saw, be careful what you wish for, fulfills itself when the confessioin, so long sought, when finally savored, doesn't taste as sweetly as was long imagined. Jugas-Brita has survived away from fromansfarden, but stumbles when her grandmother dies, unexpectedly. In a moment of weakness and mourning. Brita seeks comfort in young Carl and the result sets Fromansgarden in turmoil once more, as families battle families, for justice.
The Free Church movement sweeps the samll community. Talk of emigration by Brita's brothers and father draws her from the life she would prefer in western Dalarna.
In Africa Anna is stricken with an unknown illness and makes plans to return to sweden. She and an ecstatic Alex speak briefly on the telephone before her departure and plans are laid for their future in ZSweden once she is healed. However, Alex is unaware Anna is returning with a great joy and a great sadness.
