It's 2028 and the world's major cities have been flooded by a three metre rise in sea-level following a catastrophic climate change event.
Kyle Gibbs escapes from a prison ship in a bid to track down members of the new global government responsible for him and his team's false incarceration. To succeed, he is forced to join and serve them. On their first mission, he is tasked to capture one of the last operational nuclear sites in France which is refusing to join the Global Government Collective. In climate-ravaged Kenya, a group of warriors set off on an epic journey to forge new lives for themselves in Europe, fighting off rival gangs and brutal slave debt owners along the way, to reach the land they believe will change their lives for the better. The two groups of fighting men are set on a collision course, facilitated by the mysterious resistance leader, Vargen, hell-bent on bringing the global government to its knees.
Wayne Marinovich is an author and photographer who grew up on a farm in South Africa and spent most of his young life outdoors, learning and developing his passion for the natural world. When he was not fishing, bird watching, riding his bike or climbing trees, he was running around on top of the barn roof, fighting imaginary villains.
After a successful career as an IT consultant which saw him travel to all the places he loves writing about, he settled in the leafy county of West Sussex, England where he now resides with his wife and fellow photographer, Anneli.
His passion lies with conservation and environmental issues which affect both humans and the natural world alike, and he is most happy photographing and writing about the planet's beauty and fragility.
Currently he is working on the Kyle Gibbs series, an environmental piece set in a future climate-changed world. The first three books in the series have been published and he is currently working on the fourth. Wayne is also working on a portfolio of environmental novellas and short stories, the latest release being, Floodlanders, a teenager's tragic journey in a flooded London.
It's the mid 21 century. There is no oil, and the polar ice caps melted, raising ocean levels by three meters. A conspiracy is trying to get control of everything.
A small town with control of a nuclear plant in France is resisting. The conspiracy frees Gibbs from prison to take the plant. Of course, he soon joins the resistance.
Not bad as these things go. Not as sleazy as some, but that's ok.
This was loads of fun. Set a few years in the future after a major environmental disaster this is a story of global control and the always present resistance movement. Loads of great characters and lots of action keeps you wanting to read more. Great Read.
I won this book from the Goodreads author a while back and it somehow ended up with books I had read already so I just recently found it and had a chance to read it. Kyle Gibbs and his men have escaped from a prison ship where they were wrongfully held for nine years. Revenge is on their minds but the new Global Government Collective (a group of billi0naires) needs them to do something and their records will be clean. The world has transformed mightily in the last few years due to climate change. Sea levels have risen drastically making coastal cities nearly unlivable. But Gibbs suspects the motives of the new 'government' and vows to find the truth. This is a fast paced book with twists and turns.
***Won in a GoodReads First Reads giveaway*** Hmm...kind of on the fence with this one. On the one hand the pages turn, the story moves, the characters do stuff, and it passes the time. So well done on making a story that is interesting and easy to get into. On the other hand, the characters felt a little off. Perhaps too wooden or idealistic...maybe naive is the right word. Not sure. But the dialogue was a bit stiff as well and maybe that helped contribute. But a solid middle of the road 3 stars.
Set in 2028, although one chapter was labeled 2027 (think it was a typo) and the last was in 2029 although very recently after events of the previous chapter. The ice has melted on Earth, water levels have risen. At high tide, much of the once dry lands are under water. The Global Government Collective (GGC) based out of London is trying to restore order. Mega-cities are run by local governors called Warlords and society is more or less feudal. However, not a lot of world building was done here. It acted as a setting but little more. Would like to have known more. But i have noticed a few short stories based in this world by the author, so maybe they offer some fleshing out.
What begins with three storyline merge into one central line by 3/4 through. It almost makes me think one of the story lines doesn't matter and it was only introduced for book lengthening. It was interesting, but i felt the characters didn't need their story told given the part they play.
Kyle Gibbs: incarcerated for being set up from events that transpired in the previous book. He is coerced into working with the GGC; to run errands and perform missions.
Christina Andersen: Deputy Minister and total wimp of a woman who falls in love at the drop of a hat and although in a position of power is totally smitten by men and a total idiot. The amount of time this girl was blushing and getting all worked up is astounding. She even squealed at the end when seeing someone. I don't get it.
Chilemba: Kenyan looking for a better life in Europe. He and his tribe break away from family and make a long trek and endure much to get to Europe. As it happens everyone's stories all meet and the convergence leads to a minor detail in the greater plot.
Taking place in the United Kingdom, France, Poland, Germany and the African/Mediterranean Sea journey of Chilemba, this novel does a bit of globetrotting. But again, the world description did not really play too big a role in anything. Almost like the world was the same except boats are a little more common and fossil fuels are extremely rare and valuable.
Pros and Cons, Cons and Pros. It is an action adventure that has decent pacing and the characters are with neat bows on their lives until a cliffhanger is revealed in the last sentence. No doubt a book 3 will explain this.
The second book in The Journey of Kyle Gibbs series PHOENIX did not disappoint. Did you read CELT book 1? I hope so because it will help you in understanding details and portions of the plot in this book a lot better right away. The great thing about Marinovich's writing is that if you picked up PHOENIX and read it first everything that he mentions in this book is at some point explained even if it took place in CELT unlike a lot of other book series.
PHOENIX takes place in 2028 not that far into the future. The world has become a different place due to a climate change that has been so drastic life for people is nothing like it was or has ever been. Sea levels have risen so high major cities are flooded and barely habitable. Gibbs and his mates are released from the prison ship they have been locked up on. Their first orders as mercenaries are from the Global Government Collective. They are to take over France's Nuclear plant. Just as in CELT the world is still run by a group of billionaire now called the GGC. Does this new world want to be run by a few select people just because they have the funds to take over the world? As the world settles into it's new surroundings a resistance leader called Vargen has different plans.
This book goes beyond just killing people and blowing things up. Just like CELT it has so many different levels to it. Such as what the world is like after a massive climate change. Can the world and it's people be bought after such an event or will people come together and take back what is theirs. PHOENIX is full of surprises. The plot races on at full speed and there is not a boring moment to it. If you are the kind of person who likes to guess what will happen next good luck. The twists and turns are like being on a roller coaster ride. This series has something for everyone. There is even a little love story weaved into the plot. Do not think because there is a man with a gun on the cover it is not for you. Never judge a book by it's cover.
Hey Wayne I need the next book to be finished now!
"Thank you Wayne Marinovich for giving me the pleasure of reviewing your book"
Phoenix is the second book of the series 'The Journey of Kyle Gibbs'. I enjoyed the first novel ( 'Celt') where I left Kyle Gibbs and his team on a prison ship in a quite complicated situation. The second adventure of Kyle Gibbs has not disappointed me on the action and plot line. Phoenix is definitely a fast-paced page turner. Most of the story takes place in Europe in 2028. However, I was also absorbed with Chilemba and his adventure in Africa, you can tell the author knows Africa well. Overall, I enjoyed this book and recommend it to readers looking for a brilliant thriller.
Wayne Marinovich takes Gibbs and his team on another thrilling action adventure, across a future world riven by the effects of climate change; giving rise to greed, oppression, suspicion and violence. Gibbs and his team stand between a world controlled by fascist greed, and the hope of a new world order of peace and clean energy for all. "Phoenix" is a great sequel to "Celt" and as with "Celt" is a cracking good read, action packed from beginning to end. Don't miss this portend of what may just lay ahead for our fragile planet.
This is a the second book in the series 'The Journey of Kyle Gibbs'. It carries on where the last book "CELT" left off, with Kyle & his team of men on a prison ship. Set in the future 2028 climate change has made the sea levels rise flooding major cities. Kyle & his men are out to find out who framed them in their prison. Great action adventure series. Give it a go you will not be disappointed.
Another amazing story, keeping attention to the end with one surprise after another. Read in a little over a day because I had to go to sleep, otherwise I would have stayed up all night to finish last 75 pages. Ready to read book 3. Also found older story on Amazon called "Floodlanders", that I am looking forward to reading from a new favorite writer.
Even better than the first book in the series. Marinovich is building Gibbs into a more rounded character and the relentless action continues! Looking forward to book 3.
This is the second book in Wayne Marinovich's series about Kyle Gibbs. If you have read the first, Celt: The Journey of Kyle Gibbs, you will have the full back ground to Gibb's, how and why he is what he is today, but Phoenix is a stand alone story and the reader will soon become engrossed in the narrative that unfolds. Gibbs has been falsely locked away on a prison ship for several years when suddenly an opportunity to escape its confines is put in front of him. Not knowing who he can trust he cautiously follows the only avenue that appears to lead him in a direction that may allow him to extract his revenge on those he feels responsible for his incarceration. It is the year 2028 and the world as we know it has virtually disappeared. Climate change has ravaged the environment, raising sea level by three metres, leaving the land incapable of supporting the remaining population. Most individuals live hand to mouth, scrounging what little they can find to barter. A handful of very rich individuals have control of most of the earth's vital resources, energy, clean water, food, and armies to protect these interests. Gibbs and his colleagues join this Global Government Collective in order to get inside the organisation that they feel has brought about their prison sentence. They are sent to France to take over a nuclear site that has evaded the grip of the Collective. They have no idea what awaits them, who they can trust. Will they succeed? Be heroes? Or simply sacrificed for the cause? In Kenya another group of fighters are heading for Europe, hoping to make a new life for themselves. Will the two groups meet? If so what will be the outcome? This story grabs the reader. There is always something to capture the imagination. The storyline, the characters themselves who are wholly believable, and the wonder if this could be what we might all be facing in the not too distant future.
I won this as a give away, just to get that out of the way.
Over all this was a good book. Finished it in two days. Just took me some time to get free to write the review. I haven't read the first one in this series, which at times kind of left me wondering how the main character got to where he was or his motivation for things. Not to say this took away from this book. just left me with some questions. I'll be reading the first one in the series later. My only real issue with it is a personal one, didn't like who the author picked for the leader of what I came to think of as the rebels. Not saying the rebels were the bad guys, to me they were just the opposite in this case. It has nothing to do with the writing, just a personal thing I didn't like.
The pace and dialog was well written, kept moving yet not rushed like some other books I've read. I enjoyed the humor between Gibbs and his men. Unlike many other military books, it didn't come across as forced or fake.
Over all it was an enjoyable read and I look forward to the first one in the series. Thank you for the book.
A WM. KGAT-2 Military Action Thriller/Escape/South Africa/Revenge
WM. has. penned the second KGAT, which shows him escaping from his floating prison. After the escape ,hey are contacted by their old boss and fine he is not the one who turned him in. The Team finds out who did it and go to work for him with the intent of revenge. They return to South Africa And build an Army of the Army they had previously beaten. The thought of revenge is ever present. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
I found this hard to relate to. Our hero has too many unbelievable hangup as a hardcore military serviceman. The same can be said for the two warriors from Africa and mister bad guy Marcus. Our mystery rebel leader was nice surprise. I found it hard to believe that world governments left behind only had access to aging DC3 and DC4's aircraft. Where were the submarines and aircraft carriers? This plot could be fixed and become a big screen blockbuster.
Picking up from where the first book ends this is another high paced action packed dystopian read!
Once again the storyline is coherent and draws the reader into everything going on throughout. The characters are developing well taking the reader on a rollercoaster ride of thrills, fear, adrenaline and so much more!
If you like a story that is action packed with a credible story to it then this series is definitely for you.
I found this book to be a great read! The author really has some great twists in the plot which made the ending rather interesting. Look forward to reading more books by this author.
This book is the second of a series. I recieved this book for free and thought that I might have trouble understanding the story since it actually starts in Book 1. However, my fears were unfounded, as I had no trouble following the story at all! The author did a good job of filling in background points when necessary which explained just enough to answer my questions. I would like to read the first book, however, it is not necessary to enjoy the story. There is action and romance. There are several story lines that switch back and forth to lead up to the culmination of the plot, but they are not hard to follow. The main character, Captain Gibbs, is definitely a man's man, yet he has a soft side as well. I really liked that about him. I thought the story was good and if you like action books, then this one is for you.
This book was the follow up to Celt which I won through Goodreads and Phoenix continued in the same vein and was a thoroughly good read. I definitely recommend this book.
