Sweet Dreams

On Her Own

Rate this book
Most of the kids in the Roughing It program seem to have a lot more experience and confidence that Katie Carlisle. She wonders if she'll be able to keep up as they learn survival skills for three weeks in the Adirondack wilderness. But Lisa, who becomes Katie's instant best friend, is more than willing to lend a helping hand whenever Katie hits a snag.

Then Jake Summers begins to take an interest in Katie, and Lisa's attitude quickly changes. It's obvious that she and Jake had something going in the past and that Lisa is still in love with him.

Katie is crazy about Jake, but she doesn't want to hurt Lisa. Still, there's something about Lisa's confession of her romance with Jake that doesn't ring true...

Not your usual Sweet Dreams format. The romance took second or even third place to the main characters self realisation of her own abilities which increased when she had to go solo in the Roughing It program. The other main storyline was her supposed friend Lisa who is a much darker character than I’d seen in these books. She had a real psychological problem. In some ways this made the book more interesting than the usual predictable SD books.

This is my all time favourite Sweet Dreams book. I read it many times. I loved the storyline, that the character - Lisa - seemed to have a psychological defect, that if she could not get the guy, noone could have him. It seemed to me in this book that the plot deviated from the usual Sweet Dreams soppy format, and had a character - Lisa- that needed to control others, have others depend on her otherwise she was not complete. Her character seemed, for me, to give this book some meaning. Whereas other SD books where kind of lame.
