Rate this book
What do you do when the person who knows you best suddenly dies and leaves you with nothing? For Eve, that means trying to pick up the pieces of her life the best that she can. That is until she discovers a notebook full of entries written to a number of people she barely knows. As she reads about the life that her brother led, Eve soon learns that people are not what they appear, sometimes in the best ways. The Death Diary follows Eve as she deals with the death of a loved one as she learns about the life he lead through his own words.

Most importantly the Death Diary is a phenomenal story. The Death Diary focuses on Eve dealing with the lose of her brother. Be warned, death is not a misnomer, this book is a story about death and all the depression, anger, and emptiness that accompanies it.

The narrative toggles between Eve's brother, Arthur, through his diary and Eve's life immediately following Arthur's death. It's a unique narrative tool that propels the reader forward as they grow closer and closer to the characters with each intimate detail. You grow to care for the characters as the past and present come together to create a story where you crave the next detail. It's a sad, uplifting, and cathartic experience.

The Death Diary isn't perfect. Sprinkled throughout are minor grammatical errors and sentences that could use a professional editors touch. But considering the author wrote and published this book on his own (with considerable help from family and friends) the fact we have this novel for consumption is nothing short of an impressive feat worthy of praise.

I read this book in a span of twelve hours and I don't regret a moment of it. I love the story, the way it's written exactly the way people really talk and it dealt with issues so close to home I forgot it was fiction. Eve and Arthur's stories are beautiful and healing. I'm sure I'll read it again. It might seem like a simple read or an easy story... But if you've experienced true loss in your life this book will hit you at the depths of your soul and yet breathe fresh air into your lungs. Fantastic story. I highly recommend it.
