Samuel Roy "Sammy" Hagar, known as "The Red Rocker", is an American rock singer, guitarist, composer and solo artist. Hagar was one of the three singers for Van Halen, as well as the original singer of the early 1970s rock band Montrose. On March 12, 2007, Hagar was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Van Halen. He has had the opportunity to work with some of hard rock's most famous guitarists including, Eddie Van Halen, Ronnie Montrose, Neal Schon of Journey, and more recently, Joe Satriani. He currently resides in Mill Valley, California and also has a residence in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. His present musical project is as lead singer of a hard rock band called Chickenfoot.
Part cookbook, part autobiography/memoir, this famous rockstar has written a book (along with Josh Sens) that is as full of gossip and celebrity name-dropping as it is of recipes. The author divides it into three parts based on his three homes – Cabo, Maui and Mill Valley, CA. Lots of Mexican food, pasta, and of course, beverage recipes. The book includes a Recipe Index and lovely photos – of Hagar and his friends/family/fans, his homes, and beautifully plated food.
Yes, this lifestyle cookbook is the brainchild of THE Sammy Hagar, the high-energy rocker who found success as a kickin' solo act, and was frontman for the bands Montrose and Van Halen. Over the years, the Red Rocker developed the reputation of party host extraordinaire, which helped bolster the image of his Cabo Wabo Tequila, Sammy's Beach Bar Rum brands, and Sammy's Beach Bar and Grill franchises.
But can he cook? At first I was skeptical. Then I read a few pages of this cookbook and realized that the most remarkable thing about it is that the guy is genuinely passionate about food.
This book starts with a foreword by none other than Emeril Lagasse, Hagar's true-to-life partner in culinary crime. Hagar goes on to tell us he learned to appreciate the good life from his namesake, his idolized Italian grandfather, Sam, whose favorite hobbies were "hunting, fishing, lying, and stealing."
The bulk of the book is divided into chapters titled after Hagar's favorite party cities. Cabo San Lucas is the inspiration for Lobster Burrito, Epazote Quesadilla, Quick and Easy Guacamole, and Sammy's Wabo Shrimp. Maui spurred recipes for Vegetable Frittata, Papaya-Marinated Chicken, Vegetable Sitr-Fry, and Spaghetti with Black Olives and Orange Zest. Hagar's home in California's Mill Valley is the place where he whips up down-home favorites, such as Beet and Strawberry Salad, Homemade Stock, White Beans with Serrano Ham Hock, Chorizzo and Pork Loin Paella, and Braised Lamb Shanks.
And let's not forget the cocktails. Heralded for his love and appreciation for a well-crafted cocktail, after dark, of course, Hagar gives numerous recipes for his own creations. This impressive selection includes the tequila-based Red Rocker, Bloody Maria, and Waborita. There's a vodka cocktail or two, and rum drinks, including his most famous of all, the passionfruit-tinged PMS.
I had a hard time putting this book down, not only because of the fifty well-written recipes, but also because of the narrative. Taking up at least as much page space as the recipes are Hagar's food and party stories, along with personal photographs, which all revolve around his life on stage, his family, and his friends. The language in these sections is sometimes coarse. But you just can't help but connect with a guy who makes his own coconut cream, practically worships perfect mushrooms, gives generously to charities, and plans to consume all ten thousand bottles of wine in his cellar before he checks out.
The book's main weakness is its lack of any type of dessert. But we're not throwing a tea party, here. So mix yourself up a Sammy's Rockin' Picasso or whip up something simple and familiar like Potato and Leek Soup. It's time to have fun with Sammy Hagar.
I love Sammy. I had to buy this book after reading the library's:) simple, interesting and fairly healthy dishes with a smattering of the "f" word for the win.
Following Sammy Hagar's career has been a longtime guilty pleasure, shared with one of my brothers. Some of the silliest mix-tapes I received from him in the '90s were compilations of the "Red Rocker's" early solo work. What's always been kind of cool about Hagar is his happy self-confidence, even while writing and recording gems such as "I Can't Drive 55." This book exudes that confidence, and it's as much a personal scrapbook and condensed memoir as a cookbook. Some of the memoir-ish portions include a little TMI about some extremely personal preferences-- but this isn't nearly as ick-inducing as many a rock 'n' roll memoir. But, in addition to being a goofy account of his oh-so-rockin' life, he talks a lot about love for food and cooking, and I can relate a lot more to that aspect. I haven't tried any of the recipes yet, but they look pretty good -- and they're simple and focused on fresh ingredients.
I am a Sammy Hagar fan, whether it is his music or his books (The Book "RED" is a great read). My very first concert was Hagar singing with Van Halen 1991. I also saw him on his Marching To Mars Tour when he left VH. I usually would not bother looking at a celebrity cookbook, but I was curious when I saw this at a local library. This is not just a cookbook, but is filled with great photographs and tales about Hagar's love of food, from him starting his first club in Cabo, to his houses in Mill Valley and Maui. There is also interesting stories about the culture in these areas. You do not need to be into cooking to enjoy this book, which has stories about his famous friends and their love of food. There are stories about Van Halen, Kenny Chesney, Shep Gordon, and Hagar's cooking friends. Rock fans and cooking fans will enjoy this book.
I'll admit it, I did not have great expectations for this cookbook. I pulled it off the new book shelf at the library and browsed through it. When I saw that it was a cookbook with lots of photos from the Baja region of Mexico I checked it out since my husband is teaching there now.
Well, there are some delicious looking recipes in this book and they aren't at all complicated. I'm going to make Sammy's Wabo Shrimp --
24 large shrimp Juice of 3 limes 3 shots of Tequila 2 cloves garlic 2 jalapeños 1/4 cup cilantro Salt and pepper 2 Tbsp peanut oil
The recipe that follows is very simple. Another one I'll make soon is Spaghetti with Black Olives and Orange Zest. I'm not a Sammy Hagar music fan but if you are, you'll probably be interested in all the memoir stuff and photos. And if you're not, you can just enjoy this book for the food. :)
Picked this up for a laugh...another musician who thinks he can cook. What a surprise to find out that not only is Sammy a great cook, he has a passion for it that transfers to every page. I have already tried out 5 of the recipes and they are fantastic. Simple, easily made, and easy to find ingredients, make this a great purchase for anyone who wants to add to their cookbook collection.
Fun book with stories about Sammy's love of food and the locations that he lives that inspire him. He also includes his favorite recipes and how they came about. He has lots of famous chefs as friends and reading about the feasts they cook was sometimes mouth watering.
This is a must for any Sammy Hagar fan, but it's also a wonderful cookbook. The recipes are laid out perfectly for easy use, and there are even stage pictures and room for notes.
Fun ride through The Red Rocker’s food life. His early Italian roots, through his love of Mexican food and ending with California Cuisine. Good recipes and I have enjoyed the ones I have made.
