About the author

Sidney Finkelstein, born in Brooklyn, New York on July 4, 1909, received his Bachelor’s degree from City College in New York in 1929 and his A.M. from Columbia University in 1932 before he became a renowned critic of music, literature, and the arts. In 1955, he earned a second master’s degree from New York University. During the 1930s he served as a book reviewer for the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and worked for the United Postal Service. In the 1940s he joined the music staff of the Herald Tribune and also served as a music reviewer for several other publications including New Masses, Masses, and Mainstream. Finkelstein became active in the Communist Party U.S.A. (CPUSA) where he served as the party’s leading musical and cultural theoretician. Finkelstein applied his interpretation of Socialist Realism in several books on arts and culture, the most famous being Jazz, a People’s Music (1948). Between 1951 and 1973 he served on the staff of Vanguard Records, a New York based record label that specialized in jazz and classical recordings. In 1957 he was called to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee for his Communist party affiliation. Finkelstein died in Brooklyn, New York on January 14, 1974.

Like the other books in the Hidden Walks series by the A to Z group, this book includes maps and informative descriptions of walks in urban areas, perfect for discovering new and old places.

Many traditional walking areas like the Peak District, the Lakes, Pembrokeshire, all have many many hiking guide books, but there are precious few urban ones. This is a shame - and I’m happy to see up to date, informative walks from a trustworthy brand now on the shelf. Buy it for your next city break, and take a break from the crowds and see something new.

lutely brilliant book, very interesting with small maps show each hidden walk
Amazing photos show that if take time to stop and take notice of what's around us because for so long we have been missing such a beautiful city
Take some time for yourself with this book it will help your mental health wellbeing.
Definitely recommend buy this book

A fascinating collection of walks in the Bristol and Bath areas, combining well-known sights with hidden gems. Definitely a book to take along if you are planning a trip to the area.

«یکی دیگر از عواملی که به غامض‌تر نمایاندن هنر بتهوون -و در واقع تمامی هنر- کمک می‌کند، این تئوری رایج در میان منتقدان مدعی عنوان «علمی» در روزگار ما است که می‌گوید «اندیشه» را باید از «احساس» جدا کرد. اینان مسایل و اشیاء را در صورتی به‌روشنی می‌بینند که از هر عاطفه یا احساسی تهی گردد یا از روابط انسانی دور نگه‌داشته شود. عواطف را فقط در صورتی می‌توان به‌درستی احساس کرد که از اشیاء یا عوامل پدیدآورندهٔ آن‌ها، یا نیروهای اسرارآمیز «ضمیر ناآگاه»، دور نگه‌داشته شوند. نتیجه وضوح علمی نیست بلکه غیرانسانی‌شدن هنر است، یعنی موسیقی را چنان می‌آفرینند که گویی از معماهای ریزریز الگوهای صوتی تشکیل شده است و احساسات را چنان بررسی می‌کنند که گویی جلوه‌های توصیف‌ناپذیر «ضمیرناآگاه»اند. » -فصل پنجم: «موسیقی ناب» و ستیز اجتماعی؛ صفحهٔ ۹۵

As someone who loves urban walking, I am happy to see that the A-Z has published some city walking guides. This one covers the most well-known city walks in Bristol and Bath, but it also contains some lesser-known walks and even encourages you to get out into the surrounding countryside. The instructions are clear and the author often suggests diversions if you want to see more of the city or make the walk longer. The book also contains handy maps and photos. I think this book will be particularly useful for visitors who would rather walk alone than go on one of the guided walks available in both Bristol and Bath.
