The Mindfulness Edge is a deep book (in a good way); there are a LOT of mind opening insights that will expand your business acumen as well as personal consciousness. The observations and examples in this book lead you to that stretch your skills and walk you through aspects of yourself, you didn't realize existed. This book is exactly what a continuous learner wants in a book, because it pushes you to dive deeper and deeper into yourself.

Fascinating read about mindfulness training. Takes the wisdom and practices of meditation and applies them to the modern life with plenty of tips and guidance to set you on the right path. The "Neuro Notes" were also a great addition to see some of the hard science behind how our bodies react to stresses.

Inspiring book that was much more actionable than Search Inside Yourself. I also liked how it clearly outlined meditation exercises for beginners, intermediate, and advanced. Other books seem to be a mishmash of all sorts of exercises, resulting in the paradox of choice. I also liked how this book tied meditation back to business. I thought it would be corny, but it actually made a lot of sense. The review questions at the end of each chapter were really useful and actually helped me to solidify the concepts.

This is one of those books where I was not fond of the writing style, yet the content was solid enough to round my review up instead of down.

This book looks at mindfulness from the perspective of a tool to help one be a better leader, Part One covers how mindfulness changes the brain and the benefits of those changes. One thing I appreciated was the side bars by coauthor Tim Gard which discuss the neurology of mindfulness. This is an area that has developed rapidly in recent years and so, while I did not retain all the details, I appreciated the update.

Part Two discusses mindfulness practices. It discusses different ways of meditating and different ways of incorporating mindfulness practices. The last couple chapters get into some of the deeper changes that can come from mindfulness practice and talks about some of the changes in attitude that mindfulness practice can bring that might not fit so well in the leadership focused benefits covered in Part One.

I appreciated that in both parts, Matt Tenney really meant mindfulness, not just mindfulness as a less scary sounding word for meditation. The book covers both sitting meditation practice as well as ways to and benefits of integrating mindfulness in everyday activities. It is this second set of activities -- which, it is true, builds on the foundation of more formal meditation practice -- which really gives benefits in day to day life.

What lowered the rating of this book for me is that both Part One and Part Two felt like they belabored the point. I feel like Part One could have been 2-3 chapters instead of 6. Part Two felt more appropriate to the amount of content but still could have been made a few chapters more concise.

Overall though, it is worth reading. I actually felt that the book taught me a bit more than Search Inside Yourself. This combines the advantages of SIY with some of what I appreciated from Sam Harris's Waking Up (without what some would consider the taint of being written by a prominent and controversial atheist). In the end though, I rated all three of these 3 stars, so there is not that much distance between them.

Great introduction to mindfulness training. Addresses not only how to be meditate while sitting still but also how to be mindful when doing regular activities. Taught me how to be free of the suffering when there is pain. It was life changing for me. It also goes into how to be more skillful at managing emotions.

Do you know what you’re doing when you’re doing it? Are you doing what you want to be doing? Are you happy?

If the answer to any of these questions is No, then this book is for you.

Do you want to improve in what you’re doing? Do you want to rise in your field and take on a leadership role? Do you want to understand why you do what you do? Do you want to find greater satisfaction in life in general?

If the answer to any of these questions is Yes, then this book is for you.

Matt Tenney is an engaging author. He writes as if he were speaking to us in a living room. Tim Gard is a neuroscientist, who knows the brain inside out. He has added “Neuro Notes” to Tenney’s text every couple of pages. The average reader will find Dr. Gard’s notes heavy-going. They are excellent for those who want medical and scientific insights into brain activity and development. Even the non-scientist will gain from them, although a familiarity with neuro-terminology rapidly becomes a must. However, as Tenney himself notes in the Preface, if the Neuro Notes are too much, a reader can skip them and still gain much from the text itself.

What one gains is mindfulness, awareness, a greater appreciation for the world around, even for the mundane parts, since, after all, most of what we know is mundane. Still, in the very routine of things, we can find wonder, and Mr. Tenney shows us how.

The book comes in two parts. The first is essentially a sales job for the second. The first tells us what mindfulness is and why it’s important. Mindfulness does not necessarily mean meditation or adding something to a crowded day. Mindfulness simply means being aware of what one is about, aware at a deeper level than most of us are used to. In Part 2, Tenney tells us how we actually can practice and develop this art, beginning with brushing one’s teeth. He goes on from there to the substantial and profound, including a powerful chapter on pain and suffering. The former we cannot avoid; the latter is optional, and this chapter shows us how we can exercise that option.

Tenney occasionally is guilty of the trite example, but when he writes on wisdom, and draws a distinction between it and intelligence, when he writes on how to advance in wisdom, then he is getting to the very root of mindfulness. He emphasizes this is not a new philosophy; it is a way of being at one with the world. It is a way of improving relationships with oneself, with others, even with inanimate objects. It is a way of becoming who we have the potential of being.

The purpose of the book is not to make a person happy, although Tenney spends a bit of time on that. Happiness is the by-product of a mindful life, for happiness is an attitude, a mindset, not a destination. The purpose of the book is to help its readers become more at home in their lives, to get more out of their lives, and to give more to their lives and to the lives of the people around them.

Tenney knows whereof he speaks. He is open about his past, six years of which were spent in a military prison. This author has known the downside of life, but he (after the first year) was not beaten down by it. He rose through it, and if he can rise through that, then we his readers can rise through anything.

I recommend this book to everyone who wants to gain further insight into his or her own life and make deeper contributions to the world around us and to gain more satisfaction and happiness in the process.

Interested in upgrading your wetware to Human 2.0 to become a better leader, friend, and overall person? If yes, this is a book that you need to read.

In The Mindfulness Edge, authors Matt Tenney and Dr. Tim Gard tackle mindfulness as both a practice and a science. In so doing, they address some awfully big questions - but they do so in a way that is surprisingly relatable and immediately actionable. In today’s time-crunched always on world this is a huge win for the reader. (As a bonus I also learned how to thicken my Insula – something I didn’t even realize I needed ☺ ).

Below is a quick checklist to help you determine whether this book will benefit you. Ask yourself whether you’d like to:

• Develop a better Leadership Presence.
• See the world more clearly.
• Read about real world examples, interesting stories and mini-case studies.
• Obtain a general overview of mindfulness. (If yes, skip the science of the neuro notes and stick to the main chapters.)
• Geek out on the science underlying mindfulness. (If yes, the scientific “neuro notes” will satisfy your need for detail).
• Have a happier and more fulfilling life.
• Recalibrate your cognitive biases
• Decrease mind wandering and increase present moment awareness
• Increase emotional intelligence

In summation, The Mindfulness Edge is an approachable exploration of both the practice and science of mindfulness that builds firmly upon the foundation begun in Matt Tenney’s first book Serve to Be Great. It is an ideal starting point for those new to the practice of mindfulness, yet also offers tremendous value to experienced practitioners.

The Mindfulness Edge is a reminder of the beauty and power of the human mind. Engaging the readers right away in chapter one with a beautiful explanation of the evolution of the theory of relativity, and its relation to the importance of “the beginners mind” in our every day interactions, the author elucidates the greatness that resides in all of us, and our potential to harness our own inner Einstein and see our thoughts and lives in a totally different way. The author, who has also worked extensively with mindfulness in corporate leadership, leads the reader through how these personal inner world paradigm shifts can ultimately change the outer world around us. This practical guide leads the reader through steps to building an effective personal practice, and offers specific exercises to develop this practice. I found this book to be inspiring. As a mother of three young children with two places of employment, I experience daily anxiety and some thought patterns that can use adjustment at times – I found this book to be engaging enough to actually change some of my patterns. After explaining what I learned to my 8 year old son when he was feeling frightened about something before bed, and I could see these tools have also helped him. I highly recommend this book. It is engaging, interesting and ultimately mind expanding. I am grateful to the author for his supportive enthusiasm for a mindful and joyful life!

Over this past holiday season, I was invited to read and review a pre-lease, advance copy of a book by Matt Tenney and Tim Gard. The title of the book is The Mindfulness Edge. The book's subtitle is "How to Rewire Your Brain for Leadership and Personal Excellence Without Adding to Your Schedule." I think that Tenney and Gard have written a true gem. Tim Gard provides the "Neuro Notes" throughout the text that reference the most recent and relevant research relating to the concepts described by Matt Tenney.

Reading The Mindfulness Edge was an exceptional experience. With practical as well as scientific insights, these two authors provide persuasive evidence to illuminate the power within the practice of mindfulness. Their combined insights encourage the reader to explore the multiplying effect of mindfulness -- clearly demonstrating the linkage between mindfulness practice and improved self-awareness, mental agility and attention control as well as unconditional happiness. These resulting benefits can all lead to a multiplying effect on personal leadership effectiveness -- in fact this book could have easily been titled, Mindfulness: the personal leadership effectiveness multiplier! I encourage you to get a copy, read it and begin the practice of mindfulness as a part of your leadership journey.

After reading The Mindfulness Edge, I was left with an indescribable sense of awe for the power that lies within each of our minds. A power that can transform us completely as leaders and in all aspects of our lives. Profoundly different than ordinary intellectual knowledge, Matt and Tim give us a firsthand glimpse into another dimension of being from which true life-changing wisdom pours forth. We are taken on a journey into the world of mindfulness, a practice that carries us beyond our conditioned, reactive, ego-based mechanical nature to a deeper realm that exists within each of us. The nature of this realm is that of pure peace, compassion, wisdom, mental sharpness and intuition that enables us to perform at peak levels as leaders and as human beings, embodying all of the positive all-attractive qualities which all people aspire to. Once we have made the shift to this deeper dimension, everything in our life changes, and success pours forth in unimaginable ways. I cannot recommend The Mindfulness Edge enough, and truly hope that all people come to understand the truths in this book that will finally bring their lives as leaders and as human beings to that place of perfect harmony.

I'm a huge fan of Matt's first book Serve to Be Great and I'm so glad he followed it up with this incredible book, The Mindfulness Edge. Watching Matt speak or being around him in person, it's easy to see that mindfulness is a huge part of who he is and how he shows up in the world. Mindfulness is also very dear to my heart. I know how much it has changed my life and it is one of the single greatest things I think anyone can do to make their lives better.

Matt and Tim do a great job of explaining the basics of mindfulness and the reasons it can be incredible for you including: improving your emotional and social intelligence, becoming more innovative, managing change more effectively, seeing opportunities others don't, improving your leadership presence and leading a more fulfilling life. Believe me, I know that sounds crazy but it's true. I've seen it myself. I've meditated for 10 days straight at a silent retreat and I still think it's the most powerful thing I've ever done for my personal growth.

Thank you for writing this book and sharing it with the world Matt and Tim, I hope it reaches lots and lots of people! If you want to see an interview I did with Matt too, check it out here: www.travishellstrom.com/matt. He is a lot of fun to listen to!

Two years ago I was looking to book a speaker for a conference I was planning and happened to come across Matt Tenney's first book, Serve to Be Great. I was moved by his story and finished the book quickly because I couldn't stop reading. Since that time I've had the honor of seeing Matt present multiple times and have had the chance to get to know the genuine and kind person that he is. He is a true testament to the impact that mindfulness can have on one's life. His journey has inspired me to not just want to improve my own mindfulness practice but has also made me want to be a better human being.

The Mindfulness Edge provides the perfect balance of practical application to help one get started on their journey towards becoming more mindful as well as scientific research to back up why it's so important to practice. For me, working on being mindful in the small, routine moments of the day to day and incrementally increasing that focus has made practicing mindfulness simply a way of living. It's led to improvements in all of the areas of my life.

The Mindfulness Edge truly provides great insight in to how easy it can be to start to immediately weave mindfulness in to your life to help you be a better employee, friend, spouse, parent, leader and person.

The Mindfulness Edge is a book that will change your life significantly, with the easy transition from good to great! After reading this book I feel I have a true sense of what mindfulness is and how it can be utilized in my everyday life. While reading, I was thinking about to factors in my life, personal and professional. On the personal level the book guides me with steps and information to be a true person and live in the present while reminded of the past and the future. On the professional level as a Higher Education Administrator and working with students success, this book provides me with tools to not only better service the students I encounter on an everyday basis, but to have the students understand the importance of mindfulness to its core and entirety.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone, with the understanding that after reading this book you will find it better to work and live in our society.

Not having that much experience in the topic of leadership and mindfulness I was a bit apprehensive if I would be able to follow The Mindfulness Edge book.
I should not have worried a bit, as Matt Tenney takes you on an easy to understand journey on how to achieve mindfulness in your everyday life as well as in your workplace, helping you becoming a mindful leader. I found the supporting “neuro notes” by Tim Gard, PhD extremely interesting and useful in understanding the “wiring” of our brains. This is a must read book for anyone who is serious about becoming a great leader and should be part of any business curriculum. If kids in high school would read this book we would have much better chances of cultivating a generation of mindful and great leaders.

The Mindfulness Edge can help organizations thrive! Matt Tenney and Tim Gard masterfully illustrate how the skills of mindfulness can equip leaders with the tools to foster productivity and cohesiveness. The Neuronotes that are provided throughout the book give credibility and substantiation to the assertions. The review questions are interactive and engaging and the exercises are very meaningful to practice. The metaphors throughout the book are vivid, such as exploring our ability to have peace of mind when we are craving a piece of pizza, but have to be patient. My favorite line is “They say [Love] is an irrelevant, soft skill. But love is highly relevant in a business context, and may be the hardest skill there is to develop” p.83. This book is a stellar resource.

The Mindfulness Edge is an engaging book that lays out a clear and effective path available to anyone. I especially appreciate the way Matt Tenney serves as guide through precise use of questions and exercises that lead people to discover their own inner wisdom, all while coming to a better understanding of the neuroscientific basis as provided in tandem by Tim Gard. Together, Matt and Tim take readers on an inner exploration that leads to compassionate action enabled by better decision making in any context, regardless of whether the reader is responsible for leading themselves, small teams, or entire large organizations. I highly recommend this book!

Have you ever considered the effect that thought s of past events and future possibilities have on our ability to be an effective decision maker in the present? Matt Tenney and Tim Gard, in their new book The Mindfulness Edge, explain the decision making process and how our thoughts outside of the present can negatively impact our ability to make the best, most optimum decisions. The reader is provided with simple steps to begin and then build on a mindfulness practice that change your life. This book is a excellent read for anyone who makes decisions, either in a business or personal role or both.

The Mindfulness Edge is an excellent read and I especially like the way it is designed. Each concept is articulated effectively by Matt Tenney with ways to implement the learning into life immediately. Then, each concept includes a section by neuroscientist Tim Gard, PhD to substantiate the idea on a scientific level for those who want to validate the principle addressed. Another great component are the review questions at the end of each chapter. They were a fantastic review to assure I absorbed the key material presented. This book has changed me for the better.

This book is so different than the title, and yet, the title fits. This book is about intentional living- Making the life you want to live and living: truly living. I enjoyed the science of the mind that this book included. Ironically enough, there were a couple chapters that I could not concentrate on. My mind was all over the place and not able to totally concentrate on the topic. I think that is ok, this book did make me think and hopefully stay on the path of an intentional life.

The Mindfulness Edge is an amazing book to put your life in prospective. It teaches you to be here and now. The Nuero notes adds to the validity of the content. This book makes you aware of your thoughts and triggers and how to be positive even in stressful situations. This is one of those books that will be re-read time and again and you will still learn something with each read.

This book was a great introduction on mindfulness. I've heard people mention mindfulness but I just assumed it was like yoga and was never interested. Matt does a great job of simplifying the process and making it easy to try without doing a lot of extras. I look forward to utilizing mindfulness more in my personal and professional life.
