Jung and Sex

Rate this book
C. G. Jung, despite not being widely known for his views on sexuality or the treatment of sexual issues, made extensive contributions to understanding the complexities of this field throughout his life. In Jung and Sex, Edward Santana makes the case that reclaiming this knowledge can address substantial problems with current treatments and support many who struggle with sexual issues. This thorough exploration of Jung’s approach to sexual issues presents a wide-ranging new look at his work and adds contemporary perspectives for helping those suffering with sexual difficulties. The book calls for an important bridging of clinical perspectives to address the contemporary challenges of complex sexual issues and brings attention to a large body of Jung’s work on human sexuality, ranging from pioneering thoughts on sexual expressions of the soul to understanding ways to treat sexual symptoms. Jung and Sex provides a comprehensive analysis of Jung’s views on, and clinical approaches to, sexual issues and treatments, using this knowledge in order to help those with sexual problems and the professionals who support them. It is an essential text for understanding critical dimensions of human sexuality. Jung and Sex is an important contribution that closes a gap in the literature of Jungian psychology. It offers unique insights into the subject for Jungian psychotherapists, analytical psychologists, sex therapists, and relationship counselors. The book also supports the work of academics and those interested in contemporary applications of Jungian and post-Jungian studies.

I knew that I could easily relate with the author and his message because I could relate with the same amount of repression and problems (for both sexual and non-sexual reasons) that can effect our earlier stages in life:

"My perspective originate from decades of experiencing life against many waves of harsh cultural, social, religious, and moral condemnation, which propelled an early necessity to individuate and experience a painful separateness from others. Tragedy and pain propel the inner life; this I learned with certainty. In my twenties, after my own struggles with sexual repression and working to recover from many years of homophobia, I found the courage and strength to value my sexual orientation and to fight for human rights and dignity for those affected by prejudice and discrimination."

As for the book that Edward Santana presents us, we learn about Jung's position towards sexuality, importance of expressing our sexuality, contemporary Jungian's views on sexuality overtime, and the sexual liberation from old-strict religious values.

"He said that sexuality "in the form of love... is the cause of the stormiest emotions, the wildest longings, the profoundest desires, the most secret sorrows, and, altogether, of the most painful experiences" These are sweeping psychological statements that reveal his views about the commanding effects and influences of sex and love on a person's psyche.

...equally as important as the nutritive function or instinct, it "comes under a moral taboo and has to submit to a large number of legal regulations and restrictions." Unlike the nutritive function, sexuality is not subject to the free will of the individual within society, and this, he said, caused a maladaptive result. He directed attention to the psychological consequences of this restriction for the serious problem it creates: "It is therefore understandable that a great many pressing interests and powerful emotions congregate round this... for as a rule affects are found at places where adaptation is least complete." He distinguished the problem as not in the forms of sexuality but rather in the deprivation of the means for the individual to allow the natural flow of sexuality to express itself and develop without unnecessary interference. Jung mentioned maladaption as a need for the soul to express and manifest its needs. He was also referring to the need for humans to grow and develop their instinctual natures. From a Jungian perspective, this would indicate the need for expression as a factor in both developmental and spiritual domains. Accordingly, the level of repression has an impact on the individual, and ultimately on society." Pg. 72

In modern times, sexuality is booming more, yet on the collective level, many still fail to properly understand the importance of sexuality as being a higher quality of one's self. Most utilize it as an easy form of pleasure, and perhaps something one can identify themselves with.
