A good study of the War of 1812 in the Chesapeake, from the early raids to the Washington-Baltimore campaign. The author includes some new material regarding the British side (at least it was new in 2001). He also does a good job integrating the various firsthand accounts, making for interesting reading.

This was a very good book because it was well written, well researched and provided the point of view from both the British and American perspective. As a native of Maryland and Baltimore, I found the book to be full of places and events that are familiar. I now live in southern Pa. and therefore the influx of Pa. militia in support of the defense of the city also drew my interest. Terror on the Chesapeake keeps in perspective the British invasion of the Chesapeake region in conjunction with British world wide issues, and therefore you realize it was not a defeat of the British but a reevaluation of British priorities world wide that resulted in a peace treaty. If the war of 1812 interests you, than this book is a must read.
