Are you ready to build your game? GameMaker Studio is a professional development engine used to build games like Hyper Light Drifter, Death's Gambit, Risk of Rain, Valdis Story, and many more. These great games show the power of this tool but the very best part of GameMaker Studio is that it's one of the best places for new indie game developers to begin their journey. It is where I started and I have loved every second of it. Helping you on this journey is my goal with this book. Learn quickly with code examples. Feel confident as you master common programming patterns. Save time by using one convenient guide for all your programming questions. Book Contents: Introduction Lexical Structure Data Types and Values Variables Arrays and Data Structures Expressions and Operators Statements Scripts Objects Events Game Audio Development Patterns and Tricks Surfaces and Particles HUD and GUI Layer Physics Online Multiplayer Artificial Intelligence Thank you for your support!
I found this through the author's easy to follow video tutorials for Gamemaker Studio on YouTube. I had seen his book before - it was, in fact, the only book form search result for something on the Gamemaker langauge - but not being able to peek inside I had held off buying it. Once I realized the YouTube tutorials were by the same author I jumped to go get it.
Very clear and concise teaching style, excellent for explaining things to a beginner. I've occasionally had to hunt down an extra tutorial for something in-depth, but the book is a great jumping point for when you're trying to learn Gamemaker. Good examples, step by step breakdown. If you're new to coding and want to get into Gamemaker Studio, I really suggest this one.
Think of this book, by Benjamin Anderson, as an off-line, abbreviated version of the GameMaker Studio GML online documentation. Some make see this as a fault. However, this is exactly what I was looking for when I purchased this book. I found myself, during my normal-day-to-day, away-from-GameMaker time, wishing I had a quick resource I could access in order to fill that downtime with learning opportunities. As someone new to GML, simple language and syntax issues were difficult for me. This book allowed me to make use of otherwise wasted time. For those wanting a printed version of the GameMaker online documentation, this is a suitable, but thin (by comparison) compromise.
Anderson structures the book clearly in a way that is helpful to both beginners and intermediate learners.
While some areas could benefit from more detailed explanations, for the most part examples are clear and well-explained. It seems like Anderson ran out of steam towards the end of the book, as the chapters on meatier topics like particle systems and ai are a bit skimpy.
I appreciated the book's consistent commitment to GML over drag and drop. I haven't seen that in other books so far.
Best book i've read so far on game maker! Had to borrow money from a friend to buy this! No regrets! Thank you benjamin, and all the best on your game project! Hope you find financial success as well as more popularity!
Other books i strongly suggest - Do the tutorials on GM engine, and also Gamemaker apprentice & companion are really good.
Check out the book by Matthew delucas as well. Its much more complicated - and requires some programming knowledge! ( warning :- it will leave you head scratching most of the time...Its very hard to follow - but is knowledge intensive! )
The fact that benjamin was able to write this book from the audience's view point is amazing. He teaches complicated game maker stuff in such simple manner! Benjamin is an amazing teacher.
