Wow! I don’t think that I will be able to find another word to describe what I am feeling about that wonderful story. I am not use to read Dark Fantasy story and I am not a fan of graphic violence neither (even in writing). Having read Heir to Kale and Heir to Koloso, I knew that K.L. Bone is a truly gifted author, I decided to go ahead and read Black Rose, and I did not regret it at all. I have been given this book in exchange of an honest review.

Have you ever felt real love, the one that deeply hurt and a joy that is so vibrant that you think that your soul and the one of your other half are belonging together, no matter what? This is what Mara and Edward are living, well more on the hurt side than Joy.. still, it is love. Feelings of Mara and Edmund are so raw that it is touching us deeply within our soul. There is a violence to that love that is sweet at the same time. This is a story of honor, love and honesty.

Mara is a complex character that I adore! Her wounds are so deep.. her emotions so raw, it is impossible not to feel love for her. A strong lady that gave out everything out for love. Feelings and sense of duty are what are driving Mara. It is a dangerous mix when you add revenge to the ingredients! Even though she committed the worst atrocities, I can’t bring myself to hate her. In fact, I care deeply for her. I understand the deeper motivation of her actions, she is doing everything with a sense of purpose and pride. That started an inner discussion in myself about Loyalty and honor VS what is the right thing to do…

Edward is the other principal character in this story. He is as tormented as Mara, though fire is less present. He appears human in all of his vulnerability. When comparing both of them, Edward seems to be the weaker between them two. Mara is the strong willed one and Edward the feeling driven character. I don’t know if it was the author will or if it is because Mara is so strongly built, but whatever the answer is, it is enjoyable. Even though Mara crumble and Edward is there to support her, there is this sense of ultimate devotion that is more present on Edward side.

This story is a travel between now their past as immortal beings, I really love this back and forth motion that is providing those wonderful insights and a deeper connexion to the character. The story is set in the present time with Fantasy elements, at first it was a little unsettling. I had the distinct impression that it would be in a brand new fantasy world. Following the initial surprise I really jump into it. As usual I love the writing of K.L. Bone and her imagination is out of this world!!!:) She really is a talented storyteller.

I can’t wait to unravel the mystery surrounding Lady Sandra, to have more details on the story between Mattew and Mara!! In fact, I already bought the second book!!

***I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the author***

I LOVED this. What a great new book by K. L. Bone. Bone is a master storyteller and is really great at sucking you into her tales. I have gotten lost in them numerous times now and have enjoyed it every time.

Black Rose is probably one of my favorites. It does have lots of blood and gore in it and epic battles but the love is so FIERCE in this book, it was so utterly captivating. Bah, I was a mess for Mara and Edward. Mara is such a great character that I wish I had her strength.

I really hope they get their happy ending. And I can't wait for more by K. L. Bone. Even with her book, The Indoctrination, (where I did not get my happy ending), K. L. Bone never disappoints.

5 stars. :)

The Black Rose carries us through a world of undying love, treachery, honor and vengeance. Although Mara is of royal blood, she has chosen a different path for herself as a defender. The writing will keep you engaged with its powerful emotion and difficult decisions Mara and Edward, her protector and true love must make.

K.L. Bone’s use of color enhances the mental picture for the reader. Her violet eyes reach out to us and the symbolic black rose is not lost on the audience. The story will reveal why Mara keeps her love for Edward over hundreds of years, even with the arrival of the lovely Liza.

The excellent writing skills of Bone bring to life the battle and torture scenes in the book as well as the romantic love scenes. The author’s excellent use of flashbacks will keep you engaged from the initial scene to the final paragraph.

Hopefully K. L. Bone has a sequel in process that will explain Edward’s whereabouts during his 25 years of silence. I am looking forward to reading Bone’s next novel and enjoy her grasp of her art.

to be honest, I had forgotten that I requested this book for review until it was sent to me for review!!
Haha ... it happens!
I was already reading another book but I put it down, reluctantly, and picked up BLACK ROSE and began reading!

oh ...my ...word!

I was pulled into this story from the beginning ... the story is unique, the characters complex - they are immortal after all, they've developed, over time, complex memories, emotions, personalities!
I loved the flow of this story ... warning, it does go from present time to different times in the past but it wasn't done in a way that was confusing - I feel that some people might find it more difficult to follow as the past is several time periods
when I finished the book I was sad that the story had ended ... it's left open and leaving you wanting MORE! Thankfully, there IS more THE HEART OF THE ROSE
This story is a love story ... but it's more than that ...
it's not a beautiful love story ... it's dark and brutal and heartbreaking at times

When I opened the cover and started to read I was immediately drawn into the story. Mara is a very strong woman and easy to identify with although she also has an Achilles heal so to speak that allows her to be vulnerable and believable. The fast paced story leads along a mysterious path of visions and dreams that all link Mara to the past and the future. Although she struggles from time to time, she manages to maintain a strong commitment to her chosen post as Captain of the Black Rose Guard.
She and Edward are forbidden lovers and she must deny herself and honor her position at any price. The story is full of intrigue, vengeance, violence and blood shed. This is all handled in a carefully written prose that does not over emphasize the gore but uses it to enhance the story. For me, this is the kind of book to read again in a few months. It leaves you wanting more.

Do you know that moment when you request a book because it sounds good and has amazing ratings and you're happy to read it... and after few chapter you want to cry, because it is so bad? I don't have expectations at all for some book and I haven't had for this one, but it killed me. It reads more as a draft or a sketch. Dialogue, dialogue, very boring. No descriptions, no emotions, more telling then showing. Flat characters, flat story.

DNF at page 25/176

Do not pick this up, because honestly, and without trying to be a b.tch, I've read fanction better than this one. And I'm not saying that fanfiction sucks, on the contrary, some is more structured and complex than this thing. Run for your life!

A bold novel with a an interesting twist on the world in which we live, I appreciated the author's focus on manipulating the reality to create a more romantic universe in which the story took place. Bone has an incredible grasp of the language and uses it to her advantage, drawing the reader into this emotionally rife tale wherein the language use is so intensely chimed with the descriptions of the characters and their torment, the loss of love, and the almost one-sidedness of it. I enjoyed the book immensely, and will be writing a longer review shortly.

Very intense, very graphic. Loved how you felt like you were in the book. Excited to get Blood Rose to continue the saga. This book put Twilight to shame. Unforbidden love, vengeance, war. Excellent read, but beware, not for the faint at heart for gore.

Okay thats quite enough I think. I won't torture myself with this story anymore.
Firstly I hated Edward. Ughh he is the worst kind of jerk.
And oh god I have to give the author some credit she did make me feel sorry for Mara for atleast 50% of the book after which I was so annoyed at her and just wanted to shake her into moving on. Like oh god what the hell girl he obiviously doesn't love you and even if he does you are his second choice.
That was my third problem why the hell are all these people saying it was a great "love story"?! Like seriously it was anything but a love story. I'd rather this was some tragedy tale that what it is.
I couldn't decide what did she even saw in that Edward guy. He was fucking lying, manuplative asshole. At some point I just couldn't decide if it was her sheer stubbornness that didn't allow her to move on or her just being pathetic.
Like imagine this awesome princess turned kickass knight captain being all melodramatic over a guy. Ughh! I seriously thought her men in the Black Rose group loved her much more than that Edward.
And their reason for not being togther oh my god I don't even want to start on that. In no situation can I see Mara actually loving Liza like who the hell loves the person who takes away their love. Even if they were close Liza had to have known Mara loved Edward and should never have made a move on him in the first place. Optimistic, beautiful, innocent princess be damnn. This was so unrealistic. I could see Mara accepting the fact that Edward and Liza are in love and moving on but loving Liza to the fact she feels responsible for her death lol. In her place I would have actually enjoyed seeing their "forbidden love" destroyed under the Queen's wrath. I didn't even feel sorry for what she did to Edward so that pretty much sums it up this love story was definetely not for me(if you can even call it a love story).
If immortality and love can be like that, I would never wish it upon anyone.

Darkly captivating

What a great story! It was immensely dark and bloody, so definitely not something to pick up if you're looking for a light read. But if that intrigues you, you'll likely enjoy following Mara and Edward's tale, gleaning bits and pieces of their tragic history along the way. Would recommend.

I've been thinking about this book/series for a while now... It has been a week since I finished the last installment. And I have to say, there's good news and there's bad news.

The good news is the story is interesting and hooks you. Mara is a strong woman, a peerless warrior and mystically entwined with the roses from the title. She's the leader of an elite fighting force.

But the bad news is, the story is written in present tense accompanied by flashbacks. Consequently unless you paid attention to the chapter heading, which thanks to some lovely Below 42 Vodka I was not, things get complicated. You may have to do a re-read when sober. Why drink at all, you ask? Well, I needed help getting past the male lead Edward. He is the subject of Mara's devotion, love and obsession and I had a hard time believing it. Edward's super power is to find himself in weird predicaments. He's useless at fae politics and is often ordered to be whipped or tortured or exiled and very often Mara takes these punishments for him. She probably loves him because he was very kind to her when her parents died. And he promised not to abandon her. He makes her promise to wait for him and she does. 25 years. And then he returns, only to dump her for her "innocent" cousin who was enthralled by all the stories Mara told her about her heroic love interest. As all good cousins do, she makes 'innocent' sheep eyes at him. And since he has been tortured, he wants someone light and joyful and not like Mara all kickass but with her own baggage. And despite having said he wouldn't, he does abandon her. For those of you who want to know, there is no description of cheating and it sounds like it was an emotional affair. Their love is forbidden and the queen requires that he be whipped and the lighthearted OW watch. But Mara knows Edward and OW won't be able to handle it and she takes OW's place and watches the man she loves be whipped over his love for another woman. And that's just Book 1. Yep. That took 2 drinks and lots of chocolate to come back from.

Then the joyous OW whose name I can't remember is brutally murdered by some rando prince who wanted to marry her. Edward slumps into depression and Mara, his sub-captain, basically runs the show for him. She takes his whippings for him, she trains the soldiers, she literally does everything for him except lay down outside door with Welcome tattooed on her forehead. EVentually she takes the dreadful oath of the black rose where she swears to kill everyone from the court that rando prince murderer belongs to. This is an oath Edward should have taken but hey, Mara has done everything for him so far... so why not this.

Like I said, the story was great but the book needed to be re-written in a linear way. The jumps from past to present were confusing. Characters you thought were dead pop up and you have to check chapter headings again. A lot of time was spent crafting Mara's character. Her friends were noble, kindhearted, but all I could see was Mara. Her development came at the expense of the the others. The arch villain, the male lead, the OW whose name I cannot remember... none of them are as memorable as Mara. Her revenge is all consuming.

Overall, I liked the story and I kinda liked Mara even though I desperately wanted to drag her to a nice bar, buy us some cocktails and talk to her about Tinder so she could get over Edward and move on. I liked K L Bone's writing. You have no idea how lovely it is to read a book without typos and spelling mistakes. I would read another series by this author. And if Edward makes an appearance, well... Wine Central have advised they will be delivering during Covid19 Lockdown.

When I first lay down to read Black Rose, I had a preconceived idea, it was going go be a typical romance story. Trust me, I was blown away at how wrong I was.

The story begins with a very gentle introduction of characters: Mara and Edward the main two. As you begin to read, you are not quit sure which direction the book is taking you. That was the fun part.

Throught the book, Ms. Bone does a phenomenal job of taking you from present day, to the past, and seamlessly back to the present. I have to commend her on this as the majority of book styles I have read, in this manner, are normally clunky and very hard to follow. This is not the case in Black Rose.
Black Rose is somewhat of a romance story, but to simplify it as such, is to limit the possibilities. There is action as The Black Rose is invaded upon. There is heart-skipping drama during the fight scenes. And I dare you not to be afraid of the Queen!

You will find yourself whisked away into a land where Knights and Queens and Castles still reigned. You will find magic that just cannot be explained. But you will find you cannot put the book down even for a moment.

Be prepared for "whoa!" moments as you gasp at the words before you. Be prepared for tears getting caught and threatening to betray your eyes. Be prepared to be floored as you think you have figured it out, and it is nothing you thought it was. Only Latin can express it best, "Pulchre Scriptum!"

Black Rose is the beginning of the Black Rose Series by K.L. Bone. She was a new to me author, and I am grateful I gave her a read, and you will be too.

Mara was born a Princess of the Court, but due to tragedy and circumstances, she becomes a member of the Guard. There is a darkness to this story, but enough light and love to keep you going, and rooting, for Mara and her loves.

Once this story has grabbed you, you cannot stop; you will keep reading until you are finished, and it will leave you wanting more. Mara is a heroine for everyone. Total 5-star read.

K.L. Bone has a completely different outlook on Romance. She brings to life a story of undying love. A love that is only found once in a lifetime. A love that withstands jealousy, separation for 600 years and forgiveness over and over again. A love that only soul mates find.
Mara is a princess that wants to be a knight. Her parents are gone and she is being brought up by her Mother's sister, a Queen. But for Mara to be a knight, she has to give up everything that goes with being a princess. Is she willing, oh yes!
Edward is the Caption of the Royal Guards and he takes Mara under his wing. He trains her to be a knight, one of the best there is. But Mara has to be of a certain age to take the oath of a knight. With the Queen trying to find a prince for her, they run out of time and she is forced to take it early. Is this what she really wants? As much as she wants Edward!
Edward and Mara have a very special bond, a bond that not many people are lucky to have, they are true soul mates. As the Queen see's this. she sends Edward on a mission and Mara promises to wait for his return.
This story takes place in 4 different kingdoms, in modern times. I still haven't figured out if they are on earth or in another realm, for they are all mortals. They still fight with swards and follow the King or Queen of the court they are pledged to. Mara has had enough of her Aunt, the wicked Queen and decides to leave, give up being a caption of the royal guards. She has decided to bring back The Black Rose, a fierce killing, protection, revenge group. As she tells Edward this, she has many. many of the guards following her. So now she is the Caption of The Black Rose.
So many things happen and go wrong from here. but throughout all the ups and downs, Mara and Edward still find comfort and love in each others arms. This is even after a long wait, guilt, hate, and unspoken words. Being soul mates can withstand anything that is thrown at it and still be as strong as ever.
There is so much to tell of this fantastic love story, but it would give away to much. K.L. Bone has you under her wing from the start. As Mara and Edward sustain torture and separation, I find myself crying with every whip snap, every emotion they have and the coldness inside Mara is so strong, you feel her suffering. Then more tears and even more, very emotional read, at least for me. The ending left me saying Nooooo, don't stop now! But as you look back through the story, you realize that you were cheering them on with the fighting, cringing with every sound of two blades slamming together.
K.L. Bone has a way of having you be one with the story and in my book, that earns 5 stars, 10 if I could. A must read romance full of action, passionate love, memories, and brave members of the Black Rose.

I have listened to a few audiobooks written by K.L. Bone and I have to say Black Rose is the best so far, it was so unique, dark with twists that you would not expect. The book flowed at an even pace taking glimpses of what happened 600 years ago and then back to the present day.
It was phenomenal that captured me early on and left me wanting more.

* I received an ebook from the author, but it in no way influences my honest review or opinion. *

This book was my first book by author K. L. Bone, but it won't be my last! I enjoyed everything about this book right from the very start! The author grabs the readers attention and never lets it go! The reader is locked into the story and is not able to function in their real, everyday life. I was instantly transported into the lives of Mara and Edward and that of the Royal Guard.

It has so many twists, turns, loops and curves that it is impossible for the reader to guess what is going to happen next! The author does an amazing job with keeping the reader on the very edge of their seat. They are captivated, enthralled and they run through the entire gamut of emotions available to them. The reader needs to sit back and catch their breath at times before proceeding on with the story.

The reader can't help but love Mara and her rigid stance. They want her to have love and happiness while at the same time feeling sorry for the love that she once had and lost. The reader also likes Edward, despite his flaws. Enter Liza....the "ghost" that haunts them all....is she alive? Is she real? Is she a memory that doesn't fade?

It's an amazing read and one in which they can't wait to delve into! It is fun, exciting and it is over much too soon - be prepared because you are going to want to one-click book 2 instantly after finishing this one. It's a must read and it is one that you don't want to miss!! Add this and the next ones to your TBR list and get started on it today!!

I have read one of K.L. Bone’s book before, but the poetic beauty, darkness, and desperation in Black Rose overshadows anything I have read from her. Raw emotions, violence, and utter rage tackles you and pins you down until you have finished the book. There is no looking back; you just desire the next word, phrase, chapter and ultimately the next book.

Black Rose follows, Mara’s life as royalty in her Aunt’s court, how she was able to rise above the politics and ultimately how she was able to avenge the death of-of the beloved jewel of the kingdom, Princess Liza. Along the way, you will meet her love, the Queens Captain, Edward.

Mara’s skill, power, and royal blood make her a formidable soldier, BUT it doesn’t take away from her humanity. No matter what has been done to her, her heart stays loyal to those she cares about. It makes her vulnerable but also grants her your heart. I feel so strongly for Mara.

Black Rose is just the beginning. Just the tip of the iceberg. Dive in head first and try your best to pace yourself. I didn’t and devoured the three books in the series in four days.

If you love the dark gothic tragedy and beautiful wordplay of Sarah J Mass, you will enjoy K.L. Bone’s as well. Exquisitely well written.

This is the first book that I have had the pleasure of reading by KL Bone. And I can guarantee that it will not be the last!
The Black Rose was such an emotional rollercoaster ride for me. This story was so riveting and tragically beautiful. Mara, who is a very complex character, is the Captain of The Black Rose Guard. We get to see her life throughout the book. Mara had a very tragic life, very sorrowful, but so not let that fool you.
She is strong, brave, and shows no mercy for those who cross her or the ones she cares about. But she has one weakness. The one thing that has haunted her for over eight hundred, the one thing she wants to not want, and that is Edward, the Queens Captain. We get to see the unification between Mara and Edward.
The love between Edward and Mara is beyond anything I have read before. It was dark, desperate, and so beautiful that it was almost hard to believe that they stayed apart for eight hundred years. But there is a reason behind that. A very dark, sorrowful reason.
Black Rose is only the first book in this amazing series and I can not wait to dive into the other two books because if it was anything like this one, I know I will not be disappointed.
As a side note: If there were ever a character that I would want to work alongside with, it would definitely be Mara.

A literary Homerun! I loved this book from the first page to the last! It’s dark and twisted, full of love, hate, and torture! The detail in the writing is amazing and makes the scenes play out with such great detail that it’s like I am fully there with Edward, Mara, and all the other fantastic characters that I have come to love (and dislike). The life events of Edward and Mara and Garreth play out over centuries and they leave you intrigued to know what is going to happen next and what happened In the past to makes things the way they are! A definite must read and I can’t wait to read the next one!

The Black Rose takes you on a dark spiral into the broken love of Mara and Edward. The mysteries are slowly unveiled throughout the book with small glimpses of past events peppered throughout. Eventually, you see the whole picture of tragedy that struck me with a gasp. I loved being thrown into the dark world of immortals and their tragic broken-heartedness. The flairs of mystery left me second guessing myself throughput the whole story. This was a truly intriguing book that leaves me aching to read the sequel!

I'm about to say something that no bibliophile probably should
I enjoyed this book and it needs to be completely rewritten.
It was highly repetitive to the point where it seemed to be a reading book for children.
This of course threw the poor book off balance because the content is decidedly NOT for children.
I liked it.
I found the story to be very compelling
Unfortunately, if I am honest (and I'm compelled to be), I can not say that the writing did the excellence of the story justice.

This is normally not a genre that I find myself enjoying but this author did a spectacular job of sucking me right in and taking me on such a fascinating adventure!

I purchased and read this book from a suggestion of my favorite author. I was so wrapped up in the story and the adventure that I couldn't stop thinking about it even when I did take a break to actually work. ;) i loved the mixture of modern and old world fantasy. Immortal badass woman!

I was a little confused as to what was going on at first, but the author does a great job of building up to the backstory! The opening scene imagery pulled me in and I was hooked!Mara is such a badass, and I felt such a range of emotion reading this book. It does end in a bit of a cliffhanger, and jumps back and forth from past to present in a way that enhances the story beautifully. I can't wait to get more of this story!

Another user said that this has a good story but desperately needs to be rewritten. They couldn't have captured my own thoughts better. I spent the entire book desperately trying to figure out anything about the society within which it takes place. None of it is really explained beyond the barest description of the courts. It just reads as an unfinished work in desperate need of editing.

One of the best books I have read in a while.

5 Stars. Watch a princess find loss, love, betrayal and revenge through her long immortal life. The vow of The Black Rose changed her worldly purpose to avenge those who gave their vow to follow her.
