Melodie thought Hidden Bay was just another stop in her nomadic life. That soon she'd be moving on again.
But as soon as she arrives, strange things begin to happen. There's Blake, the guy who's so familiar, though she's sure she's never met him; there's the man who keeps appearing, who may not be a man at all; and there's the blackouts.
Except that in the blackness, she's going somewhere. Somewhere other. Somewhere dark, and wet, and full of pain.
And if she doesn't work out what it all means soon, it could be too late. For her. For Blake. Perhaps for the whole town of Hidden Bay.
I was so happy to visit these wonderful characters and Hidden Bay, where nothing is at it seems and there is a special someone that will help to soothe the lost souls, maybe even find a little romance in Ghost Storm, an engrossing supernatural tale that left me wanting to revisit them.
Jessie Costin's Ghost Storm:Hidden Bay book 1 is an atmospheric and very entertaining paranormal mystery/suspense story aimed at the New Adult age group but I think that this book will be ahit with anyone who loves a paranormal mystery with a lot of romance thrown into it for good measure will enjoy reading this book. This is a vivid story about souls caught in a place they don't belong and the extents they employ to make their presence known amongst the living of the coastal town of Hidden Bay. This is a spellbinding 5 star read that I highly recommend. Ghost Storm revolves around Melonie a 20 year old who has just left Sydney leaving her life with Jason, her ex-boyfriend behind her. Far behind, from the east side of Australia she and her mother have moved many long kilometers to Hidden Bay a small coastal town in western Australia. Her mother Julia a 'gypsy' never settling in one place very long and this is the latest in a long line of moves this time Melonie has come with her. The book commences when something strange happens the moment they reach the outskirts of the town of Hidden Bay, firstly the radiator hose bursts, secondly Melonie blacks out and when she comes round does not know what happened.. something which has never happened before!! Along comes a tall dark saviour in Blake, the mechanic who gives them a ride in his truck to Hidden Bay, saying that he will tow their vehicle to the garage in the morning. As they are passing through the town he tells them about the dance which is coming up at the town hall, where he will be playing in the band. Melonie sees a man in between two of the boarded up houses but no one else sees him. They drive past the newer part of Hidden Bay out towards the coast and they find out that the house left to Julia, after her aunt's death, is next to his grandparents' house, they are neighbours. Just as Blake and Melonie are going up the steps with the bags and she says watch out just as they step onto the top step it breaks and they fall through the steps. How did she know the step was about to break? What else does she know or feel? This only the start of the strange events which lead everyone to think that Melonie is losing her mind or life because of what she sees and hears which no one else can. She sees a ghost dressed like the captain of a ship who shows up firstly in her room in the middle of the night warning her that a big storm is coming and then disappears. Julia has a cup which for her she believes is a morning drink for her but it turns out that Blake is fixing the step that was broken by Melonie and him last night. Blake invites her to sit with him and invites her to the swing dance and that his grandmother has lots of dresses from the 40's for her to chose from! Melonie choses a red polka dot dress that flings out when she twirls around like only the original 40's clothes do. Melonie keeps having blackouts each time it is harder to get her to awaken.. the captain keeps showing up and talking to her warning her about staying away from the other-side because she does not belong there and the longer she stays the more damage the angry souls will do to her! The night of the dance almost everyone is attending and the music is all the wartime classics Blake plays sax in the big band and his friend, Jordan to dance with Melonie until he gets a break from playing. Jason a man from Melonie's past has followed her to Hidden Bay and wants to get back together again but he is drinking and getting drunk and trying to force her to kiss him back but she punches him and he storms off. The power goes out in the town hall and the 'ghost storm' gets fiercer and wilder and the building creaks and Melonie things this is the end because of what the captain said. Melonie thinks that Blake has gone outside into the storm... I found that Ghost Storm, Hidden Bay book 1 was a very enthralling book it built up, up and just when you thought you had solved what was the cause of the problems in Hidden Bay another climax occurred better than the one before. I loved the descriptive pieces in Ghost Storm as they added to the moody atmosphere caused by the other world bringing it so close that I had to look around and make certain that I was not being sucked into the 'ghost storm' myself. I loved the captain and the other lost souls in the book, they were portrayed in a way I have not read before, it was new, exciting and very well done and I am sure that the next book in the series will have some of the same other worldly characters like Aunt Maggie and Arthur both of whom have a lot to answer for with regards to events in Ghost Storm. The attraction between Melone and Blake is something so deep that they cannot explain it away as only sexual, it also seems like they are drawn into another world of the lost souls, and in this case it is the paranormal world of Melonie's blackouts come to life nothing is as it seems. Their relationship has great depth and they have a special 'ribbon' attaching them to each other so that they know when the other needs them. I give Ghost Storm:Hidden Bay Book 1 5 Stars Jessie Costin you did an excellent job marrying this world and the next giving the reader a glimpse into just a little of what is happening in Hidden Bay and I look forward to more of the same.
I loved this book, from the ghostly feels, to the love interest, to the Unknown... It made me gasp, smile and shout at my kindle. This is the first book by Jessie Costin that I've read, I must say I really really enjoyed it! From the first chapter I was captivated, reading it in one sitting! I love the chemistry between Melody and Blake, the fact they had a connection and the reason behind it was jaw-droppingly great! A definite must read! - #2OCCAB
I had a lot of fun with this book. It was based on an idea I began back when I was a teenager - much revised since then. I enjoyed creating a historical novel too - fancy 1991 being historical :)
But I especially like the theme of discovering your purpose & learning to listen to your intuition. That's what Melodie's journey is all about -- made a little more complicated by a bunch of ghosts.
I got the privilege to read this book and it is amazing! I can't wait for the others to come out! This is a book that you don't not want to put down! While reading this book, you think you figured something out, but you're totally wrong! This is a good paranormal/romance book! It's not the raunchy romance,it's the perfect love story! It's all around amazing!
* review copy from author * I was gifted this by Jessie in exchange for an honest review and to be honest I loved it, the story was amazing, I loved how fast paced it was, the characters were set out all.
Having to settle the estate of her mother's aunt, Melodie and her mom return to Hidden Bay after being away for years. When unsettling things start to happen, will Melodie discover the real reason for their departure from the small town? After meeting Blake, the young man next door, will Melodie feel a real desire to stay?
Ghost Storm is a basically a romance with some ghostly moments. There were just too many holes in the story, too much that the reader must take on faith in order to finish the book. I just did not feel that Ghost Storm was unique enough to be memorable and I did not form a connection with the main characters. Ghost Storm was a miss for me, but readers who like romance with a supernatural twist may find it to their liking.
I'm not sure exactly what was with this book, but I just could not get into it and did not enjoy any of what I was reading. While I was curious about what was coming, the entire story up until the spot I quit felt fake and unbelievable, and the book needed an editor for grammar and missing words. I'm disappointed, probably won't pick this one back up in the future.
Very addictive story that I could not stop reading. It is a compelling story that could, if you believe in ghosts and psychics, be as real as life. The only downside was the last page, leaving me on the edge of my seat, internally screaming that I need the next book right now.
Melodie and her Mother move back to Hidden Bay after her Mothers Aunt dies. Although she is not thrilled abut the move she is willing to give it a try. Then strange things start to happen to her. She meets Blake, a boy she never met before, but gets a strange feeling that she knows him some how.
Then there is the blackouts (she is having) and the man she keeps seeing. During her black outs she seems to go to some place, a place that she doesn't know, and is a bit frightening. Soon she is questioning her sanity, and the man that keeps appearing, she starts to wonder if he even exists.
The plot is original, and moves at a fast pace. Both Melodie and Blake are very likable. She finds herself in a situation that could be dangerous. But Melodie is determined to find the truth, and what secrets hide in Hidden Bay. A fun (paranormal) story I really enjoyed reading (it). I feel that Y/A as well as Adult readers will like Ghost Storm and highly recommend to those who love a great paranormal story.
I usually hate stories wich is in parts or cliffhangers. But i was surprisingly captivated by the story and she concluded it on a posative note. i read this story in a couple hours. I couldn't put it down I like the chemistry between Melody and Blake. I also get a kick out of Melody's mom with her bohemian personality with a touch of snarkieness(?). Melody handle what was happening to her with some struggle but comes to realize she to needed help. So overall i enjoyed the story and i think like me you will come to love Jessie Costin stories like i have.
When Melodie's mom said they were going to Hidden Bay, she believed it would be to settle her aunt's affairs and then they would be moving again.
She was not prepared for seeing and speaking to ghosts or witchcraft. How has she never known this exists in her family? Her mom, Julia, isn't able to see or communicate with the ghosts. How will she learn to use her gifts if no one can teach her?
An exciting adventure with elaborations on old sayings. This is definitely an adventure worth taking~
