I really enjoyed this book. The only reason it isn't 5 stars is because it was written in the 90's and so is outdated. There are references that certainly reflect the time period, but overall the insights relate to today and were helpful. A favorite part:"In spite of their innate competitiveness, women need each other in the nineties as never before. Not only has history trivialized female friendships, but during the last three decades we have glorified heterosexual relationships above all else. We have so sexualized relationships between men and women that we have created a stand-off between the sexes."

I didn’t expect a book about female relationships written 30 years ago would be such an enjoyable and relatable book. The gradual dissection of many of the important female relationships in a woman’s life was very enlightening and not overwhelming. This book helped me understand some aspects of my family dynamics and friendships with many “ah ha” moments.

I would not recommend this book because most of it was high-fluting, duh's-ville commentary on how women relate, especially mothers to daughters. I am surprised that something so common sense can be written down and then published.

That being said, however, I will say I did like that section on mentoring and the necessity of it. I feel like I have always had great female mentors in my life for every part of my life as a creative, female, mother, daughter etc, etc. More women need mentors with older women. I LOVE my relationships with women who mentor me through their unending friendship and wisdom.

Read this with my book group. Very outdated but it led to good discussion.
