After her parents died in a car accident when she was just a child, Evelyn Lakewood was left alone in the world. Now grown up, she enrolls at Oxford University, where she begins to create a new, stable life.
But when she encounters Jared Calmburry, who she later discovers is an orphan with his own tragic history, the equilibrium she was striving for is thrown off. Instantly drawn to this mysterious stranger with the incredible blue eyes, and confounded by the unusual events that occur whenever they meet, Evelyn resolves to investigate further. What she finds will startle her beyond an ancient legacy of magic, a centuries-old secret society, and a foreboding legend with her and Jared at its center. As she follows a cryptic trail, Evelyn will discover clues to her own painful past, answers she hadn’t even been looking for—and a passionate love she cannot resist despite the dangers it brings.
Sarah Kleck was born in 1984 in Southern Germany. She studied education, psychology, and sociology at the University of Augsburg. Today, she lives with her husband and their daughters in Germany near Lake Constance.
Sarah caught the imagination of 120,000 readers worldwide with her first novel "The Concealed" and its sequel "The Revealed". After this successful fantasy series for young adults, she is now entering new territory with "Because You’re the Love of My Life". Already a bestseller in Germany, this novel is now being published in English.
I had to give this 2 stars because the first 50% wasn't awful. In fact, I was so intrigued by the mystery that I couldn't put it down. Right at that halfway mark, though -- oh my god.
These are British students at a British university speaking American English. Uhhhhh...
The sentence structure was awkward. The dialogue was stilted and embarrassing. Obviously I don't know how much of this was bad editing from the original or bad translation.
There was instalove. There was insta bad guy. Female main character is a virgin. So many bad YA red flags here.
There's something else, too. I hate to say it. I hate to be the one to bring it up. ...was this originally Twilight fanfic? Like 50 Shades? It had such a Twilight formula feel to it. • new girl in school • mysterious untouchable boy • mysterious untouchable boy making eyes at her, then avoids her • mysterious boy randomly disappears for days at a time • mysterious boy appears out of nowhere to save damsel in distress • a member of mysterious boy's 'group' intensely dislikes main character
I could go on and on. Someone please tell me if you see it, too, or am I crazy?
Also, in case anyone reads this and thinks this is the next Twilight: it's not. It's not good, not even Twilight good.
I gotta say, this was an impressive debut novel by Ms. Kleck. Mostly because it was so well thought out...and I mean every single detail. And those details also affected the pace of the story in the beginning for me personally. But clearly not enough for me to lose interest.
I'm going to tell you a little secret; no matter what genre a book is written in, my true motivation for reading is the hope for good writing. Yes, this book was originally published in German and yes, there were a few awkward phrases, but holy cow, the author did her homework on the outline. The way she interwove the storylines to make every piece fit into her fantasy world was well, genius. Not to mention, it's even safe for my fourteen year old daughter. How many books published these days can we say that about?
I'm not a fan of cliffhangers, but I'm giving Ms. Kleck a break on that one. She should be proud of her freshman attempt and from what I've read in the early reviews, everyone is anxiously awaiting her second book...including myself.
DNF--Spoilers and a bit of a Rant * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * At first I was willing to give the author some slack due to issues of translation. The dialogue is clunky and varies from, "Shall we meet at the library?" to "What the hell does he want?" and other style inconsistencies that are incredibly awkward. There is repetition of the same phrase or idea, and a lot of needless prose. A lot of this I don't know how much is due to writing or the translating, but there are _two_ translators; it seems like they could do better. It is frustrating, because up until a certain point I found the ideas somewhat interesting, but the character of Evelyn so shallow I wanted to shake her. There was potential. I finally stopped because I was too infuriated to read more, although I did read a little after this point to see if Evelyn would do anything other than moon about Jared. ***Warning: Spoilers and a bit of a rant!!***
I stopped at the point where Felix tries to rape Evelyn, after he poisons Sally so he can be alone with Evelyn. This isn't just some feeble attempt at a rape, it's a full-blown rip off her shirt and pants, his pants are down and he's erect and against her thigh when Jared breaks into the room and solves the situation by beating Felix up. This isn't a trigger warning, this is a really ticked off reader at what happens next at how the situation is handled. Evelyn blows the whole situation off. She's so happy to see Jared it's as if the whole near-rape never happened. She and Jared kiss outside her apartment, and that's all she can think about. _She has just nearly been raped!_ I don't care how much she has the hots for this guy, let me repeat that. She has just nearly been raped. But seeing Jared has made her all swoony, and now everything's just fine.
Sure, the next morning she's anxious about seeing Felix, for about 20 minutes. This is what Evelyn thinks about the situation: "Fortunately, I didn't run into Felix. So I decided to banish this horrible memory I would always associate with him into that little locked box of my subconscious where I carefully kept all the other dark moments my life so they would not rob me of my senses. When the time came, I would open that box and survey its contents. One after the other. And try to process everything. Somehow." EXCUSE me???
Let me just remind anyone who has actually read this that Evelyn's beloved sister, who died, and whom Evelyn does not want to let down, was a member of the POLICE. Evelyn's friend Sally asks her, "And Felix? Are you going to the police?" Evelyn says, "I haven't thought about that yet, to be honest." What? It should have been one of the first things she thought of, with a sister that had been a police officer. But no, then she decides to banish Felix to her little box--and she's a psychology major. I can't even express how disgusted I am with this book. I thought maybe rape culture was confined to the USA, but I guess not. I suppose I should really read more to find out if she actually does do something more proactive about it, rather than just leaving it at letting Jared break Felix's nose, and Sally being so non-plussed about it and absorbed with Colin. It infuriates me that the women are so obsessed with the men they're interested in that they don't seem to care that another man has tried to commit rape, and is getting away with it. Sally was right when she said that Felix was a psychopath, but after that, she drops it. And I don't have to read further to know that he's going to end up in the picture again. I am saddened by the number of five stars reviews by readers, who seem to not find this a problem at all. What rape culture? I read once a comment from one man--"I don't choose to participate in that scene." It's not a _scene_. It's a cultural state that you participate in simply by living in that society, and by saying you don't choose to participate, you're saying you don't believe rape culture exists, because you don't think it does. Just because someone isn't a rapist, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. By using it as a plot device as glossing it over as though it's something completely unimportant, it's telling young women that it isn't something they should bother about. It just happens. Shut it away in that little box in your mind. What a horrible, horrible thing to put in a book. I don't believe in censorship, but I do believe in authorial responsibility, especially when writing for young adults.
I don't know the details of AmazonCrossing. I picked this book from the books Amazon offers its Prime members every month, and I expected much, much better. This is worse than some of the self-published books I've read with no editors. It could easily have gone through another couple of edits with no ill effects, and that's just to the point I reached. I'm just talking about the general flow, sentence structure, etc. That's not content. I'm disappointed that Amazon would not only pick something like this to support, but apparently to publish. I have enjoyed other picks that they have made. I really hope that this is just a lapse in quality and judgement on their part.
**I received an ebook copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.**
I finished this book about 3 days ago. In these 3 days i haven't been able to stop thinking about it.
I really, really, really need the next book. NOW!!!
This book kept me awake at night, because I couldn't stop thinking about it. I loved all the mystery. When evelyn was trying to figure it all out so was I.
It was a little slow at times, but it's nothing compared to how f*cking awesome it was.
I also loved Morgana. I know it's wrong, but it's more in that this-villain-is-so-evil-you-have-to-love-her kind of way.
The translation was good. I actually didn't think about that it was a translated book one single time while reading it.
The cover is so beautiful. After i finished reading the book i just sat down and looked at it.
This book made me wanna watch so i guess that's what I'm gonna do until next book.
I recommend this to everyone who loves a good fantasy, young-adult or new adult book.
(Source: I received a kindle copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to author Sarah Kleck.)
This was an enjoyable supernatural romance story, and it definitely left me wanting to read the next book!
I liked Evelyn, and I felt sorry for her in the way she had lost her family the way she did. She deserved to have something good happen to her after all that she had been through, and the problems she had with one girl at college were unfortunate and unfair.
The storyline in this was good, and I liked the mystery aspect. I was really interested to find out the mystery around Evelyn’s amulet, why Jared was special, and what exactly was going on at Oxford! I did find the pace to be a little slow, but otherwise the story was enjoyable.
Evelyn and Jared made a cute couple, and there were certainly a couple of hot scenes between the two of them, even though there was nothing explicit.
The ending had plenty of action, but also ended on a cliff-hanger, leaving me wanting to read the next book once it’s available! I did enjoy this story overall, and I really would never have guessed that this story had been translated from German to English, so a big thumbs up to both the author and translator!
Firstly, and I think most importantly, this book is set in the UK but throughout it is in American English (dorms, going downtown, etc). Secondly, this author has clearly never been to an Oxford college other than as a tourist as they do not work the way she says... (Tutorials are held in college, you sleep in a room in college - there are no "dorms", lectures are held in the various departments around the city, not in the college, you spend a huge amount of time reading in the library as you don't have the timetable load she describes, study groups aren't usual practices of uk uni students...). This lack of basic understanding of the place and culture the novel is set in is incredibly grating as you are reading if you are British. It is gross negligence on the part of an author to pick a setting and not do the basic research. A final annoying moment was when she introduces a character as being a stats expert, and then when this character is asked to define inferential statistics they have to look this up! (Basic, basic, basic stats!)
Moving past the author's poor research of her setting, and her translators' error in trying to portray British people as using American English...
The story is aimed at YA readers I think, and plays an interesting modern spin on the Merlin and Arthur story. I think it is heavily influenced by a few books - not naming names, but there has been an awful lot of YA books recently of the trilogy variety which are supernatural and feature a young awkward heroine who instantly falls in love for no obvious reason with a distant and beautiful boy... (They barely spend any time together before undying love is professed...) I'm sure you know which books I mean. Anyway, it could have been better paced - the ending was rushed. It also could have done a better job of dealing with the attempted rape - books influence behaviour, and the way this was dealt with (with violence and no police) is not the way a young audience should be shown how to deal with such an awful situation.
If this book had been set in another university town other than Oxford or Cambridge (which work differently to other universities), the ending been less rushed, the editors realised that a story set in the uk needs to be translated into British English... it could have got a three star rating from me. Nice story, but not something I'm going to be going around recommending. However, the arrogance of the author in not doing her research on Oxford just astonishes me.
First off, I want to thank the author for providing me an eBook copy in an exchange for an honest review.
Two words: Unbelievably Amazing!
This book for me was addicting. It has been a while since I read a book that took my sleep away. I'm not kidding, I woke up at dawn thinking about what was going to happen next. Those are the kinds of book that I love, books where I can't think of nothing else except it.
When I first saw the cover I thought it was pretty, then I read the blurb I thought it was interesting and told myself "Why not give it a try?". I'm so glad I gave it a try.
The book is told from the POV of Evelyn. It starts with the burial of Zara, Evelyn's sister and last member of her family, later Evelyn goes to Zara's headstone to tell her she was accepted at Christ Church in Oxford, where she applied to thanks to Zara. There she meets her good friend Sally, Colin, Felix and Jared (who's eyes totally enraptures her). Days later she discovers there is a secret which involves Jared, Professor Karen Mayflower, Colin and Professor Irvin Martin. Every time Evelyn tries to talk with Jared, he always disappears so she decides to look for the answer to this secret herself. It is until she talks with a friend she met at Oxford that she finds the unbelievably truth and then finally confront Jared and demands him to tell her if her discoveries are true.
This book is a mix between mystery, romance, urban fantasy and new adult. It has action, lovably characters and a great plot. I liked Evelyn (there was just a moment where I got angry at her and wanted to shake her but beside that I really liked her), liked Sally, Colin, Jared, Ruth, Irvin, Jessie and Enid. I loved Evelyn and Jared's relationship and also Colin and Sally's too. Both couples where just sweet. I hated Morgana, Madison, Felix (even thought at first I liked him) and Karen.
I didn't wanted to stop reading and every time I had to I cursed the fact I wasn't alone and in peace. The story from the start made me want to read more and more and more, I wanted to know the secret and once I knew it I wanted to know what was going to happen next.
Noooow I can't stop think about the end and can't wait for the next book. I need to know what will happen next!
This book is originally written in German , but I thought the translation was pretty good and understandable (which I think is important). There where a couple of things where I thought they could had use different words but again at the end it was pretty good.
Finally, Thank you Sarah Kleck for making this book, I just simply love it, and I will look forward to the next book.
I received this book in an exchange for an honest review, thanks to Xpresso Book Tours
First of all, can we establish the fact this book was written in German and it is translated in to English??? :O LIKE OHMYGOSH!!! This book is soooo good, it reminds me of why I like reading mythical folklore legendy type books! What a beautiful cover, this day just keeps getting better and better! :D
I really like the way Sarah twisted this book in another direction with the British Literature and combined it with romance, drama, action, magic and hot gorgeous boy? (who doesn't love a handsome fella right? *swoons*)
Evelyn is a very strong character with a lot of tenactity, however she has cracks like there are in every mirror. She is very fragile and distraught after what happened to her sister Zara and her parents :(. I love how easygoing she is and is instantly liked by everyone (except by Karen, Madison and Aiden maybe). She is a very fierce lover and would do anything for her loved ones. I love how she starts new friendships with Ruth and Sally, both are instantly likeable. They both become close to her like family which she is constantly craving, I like the connection Evelyn forms with these two!
Felix is a bit psycho if you ask me, I don't like him very much. I don't feel sorry for him, but unsure whether he deserves the pity or not after what he does.
Cole? He is another hotser! (did you just make up a word that does not exist? *confused face*). I love how he immediately has faith in Evelyn and Jared's love and his faith never wavers even if other authority figures are not so happy! He does not blame Evelyn for what she is not at fault for and supports her everyway even though he does not know her properly. In fact, he even tries to help Evelyn and Jared with understanding one another when they are forced to be separated thanks to a certain someone *mentions no name*
Finally, Jared!!!! ohmygod!! Don't even get me started! Is it possible for someone as handsome, totally hot, charming, generous, loyal and fierce like him to even exist??? He is so amazing once we get to know his backstory and why he disappears every time he sees Evelyn and comments with very vague answers. I was totally surprised with the heritage for both Jared and Evelyn, now that was not something I was expecting!
Let's just say, these two people go back way in time, like way in time and are forced to be apart by a certain someone whoe does not want Jared to die as she thinks this is because of Evelyn. And then the cliffhanger? Like why then! Why I am tortured for another year until the second book comes out? Nevermind, I cannot wait!
Oh my gosh let me start off by saying I give this book 5 stars! This book was so great when I got to the end I was like nooooooooo why can't it keep going. My favorite characters was Jared,Sally, Evelyn,Collin they allow were nice and caring . I disliked Karen,Felix, and morgana. I still can't get over what Felix did. I had stop liking him when he kept asking where she was and stalking her. Yeah some parts in this book I was like okay let's get back to the action but I really liked it. It had a good mixture of supernatural and some realistic things. I also can't wait for the next book. Thank you Sarah for giving me this book to review, you are now my favorite with this is my favorite book.
This book exceeded my expectations. It was slow at times and I'd preferred more action, but the storyline was really good and very very interesting and satisfying! The last 3 chapters and the end felt kinda rushed, but I liked it and it made me very excited for the next book! I liked both Evelyn and Jared, but just loved Colin (so adorable and goofy).
The translation was good, you can tell it's been translated but maybe I wouldn't notice if I didn't know before (?)
Read it if you're looking for a good dose of fantasy!
I received an ebook copy of The Concealed in exchange of an honest review of this book by Sarah Kleck. OMG, this book was amazing, from the beginning i fell in love with the book (and Jared). All the details are splendid and just the way that is written in is magical making you part of the character's universe.I spent two weeks reading The Concealed and honestly, i didn't want it to end, i want more and i cant wait to read the second book. My Favorite character was Jared because he is just perfect, i couldn't believe the end. There were parts so beautiful that i almost died and others so sad that i wanted to cry. I really hated Felix, from the beginning i knew there was something wrong with him, he was too nice, almost creepy . When i think of Karen i see her like Victoria Grayson from revenge, and Aiden should be Daniel. I'll be giving this book a 9 out of 10, it was amazing in general and i found really interesting Merlin and the stories about him but i would have loved to see a little bit more love.
This book was ok. Story was interesting bUT my major issue with this... Too much description of how much Evelyn was in '"love" ( uh lust, hello ? You don't even know him) with Jared. The author could have spent more time developing to the climax, instead it felt rushed to the end, cliffhanger. No surprise. Will want to read the next to see how she resolves the conflict.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
free copy for honesty review The concealed was an amazing story. I personally feel like it was translated very well. This story had It's ups and downs but it was a great read. it was also very different. I can't wait for the next book. honesty one of my new favorite books.
I'd like to thank the author for giving me a copy of this book in exchange of a honest review. I'd like to apologize for taking so long because I've my exams and all. Anyway, here you go.
Honestly, I got bored half way through because the character development was so bad and the writing was really immature. It was exactly like how I used to write my essays in my junior year of High School. Maybe that's because the book was translated, making it the translator's fault. There was not a climax in it, only until it was close to finishing. At least I didn't feel that there were any.
In the summary, it said "Jared kept disappearing when Evelyn wanted to question the things happening". When I read the book, there was nothing like it. He was gone for awhile, yes, but Evelyn didn't want to question him about anything. Other than wondering why is he not in classes. So that is a false summary and it needs to be changed.
However, it isnt all that bad. There were some parts such as the moments after Jared and Evelyn got together. They would've make a sweet couple if they were normal. And those scenes will make you smile. I can guarantee that.
Then there was the villain. She did not seem like a villain as she did not have any parts of what villains usually have in the usual fantasy novels. She was one of the unknowns in the book. Kleck told the readers how evil the villain is through what the characters told Evelyn. That was definitely not a good way of conveying the message. I did not think nor would I want to care of knowing anything about her. I couldnt bring myself to like the story.
Although this was a story told by first person pov, I could not relate myself to the character or feel close to her at all. I did not have any emotions other than being disappointed. And the plot was just very, very messy.
Challenge completed: A book that was originally written in a different language
I just finished reading this book. It was a freebie at amazon and had gotten many 5 star ratings so I thought... why not. I was on the lookout for a quick easy YA read. I got more than I bargained for. I enjoyed this book so much. It was a total surprise because frankly, I wasn't expecting much.
One of the things I liked so much was how the author wrote her characters. Perhaps it was the way I related to them, but they definitely had their own voice. I could really 'see' them. Even some of the more minor characters were written in that way.
Then there was the story itself. It had intrigue, romance, mystery, Arthurian Lore and more. I'm not even sure what genre this book would be considered. Romance, urban fantasy, paranormal...etc. I was surprised how much was packed into this story. Ms. Kleck did an outstanding job in melding different time periods along with the different genres. The story itself took some twists and turns that although may have had some foreshadowing...was quite surprising to me. I love when authors surprise me like that.
It was only when I got about 80% done did I realize this was going to have to have to have a sequel. Why I didn't realize sooner (no, I didn't pay attention to where it says Book 1 when I got it), who knows. Luckily, Ms. Kleck will be putting the second book out in Spring, so not too long of a wait. However, if you're anything like me, waiting even a week is a bit much when it comes to wanting to find out what happens next.
Overall, I'd give this book a 4 1/2 stars. Definitely worth the read (and it's free on Amazon right now). I will be waiting with bated breath for the sequel!
Evelyn Lakewood, an orphan, is crushed after the death of her beloved sister Zara. But the nineteen-year old enrolls in Psychology at Oxford in honor of Zara.
There, Evelyn first becomes friends with vivacious Sally and seemingly charming Felix. But the encounter with Jared Calmburry, whose incredibly beautiful blue eyes immediately captivate her, fundamentally changes her life. She is immediately drawn to this mysterious stranger around whom unusual things happen and who simply disappears every time Evelyn tries to confront him about his puzzling behavior. After finding a mysterious book with a unique symbol on its leather cover in the university library, her curiosity is perked. She doesn’t know what to make of it but Jared’s best friend Colin Sullivan encourages her with cryptic hints to continue her search for evidence. When she discovers the same medieval symbol is worn by hostile professor Karen Mayflower and engraved on another faculty member’s seal ring, she realizes that an ancient secret surrounds Jared.
My opinion: As said – I love it! The story definitely draws you in. Once started, I hardly ever managed to put the book (the e-reader, that is ;-)) down again. The writing style is delightful, the characters are captivating and the love story between Evelyn and Jared full of longing and deep feelings. This book is strongly recommended for anyone who believes in the one true love and enthuses about the supernatural. Can’t wait to know how it goes on!
This novel seems to be rated highest as: Children's Books > Obsessions > King Arthur I would personally consider it to be a new adult, urban fantasy, paranormal and Aurthurian romance novel.
I saw this off an 'also viewed' list and downloaded the sample on a whim. It kept me going. I checked the author's profile which says she studied psychology. One of my pet peeve's is that novels in these genres are often light on character portrayal/development. And the setting is Oxford among the "dreaming spires" for which I am a sucker. So I bought it. I'm glad I did. And I'm glad I took a bit of time before writing this review.
On a fast reading the novel runs as a really good read. What is expected isn't. You turn the pages trying to follow Evelyn working through not only her new life as a student at Christ Church but the mystery of what is happening around her.
The novel stays with you and like Hemingway is deeper than it first appears. Central characters are nuanced. The near rape scene mirrors current discussions in the US and Canada. I want my daughter to read it and discuss it with me.
The clear division between the two factions decoding the Prophesy central to the book and their actions place this work into being an allegory for the post 9/11 world. What one side sees as the greater good ultimately leads to the disaster most feared. The author may not have meant this work to be an allegory for our time, but it is. Can't wait for volume 2.
Evelyn(main character) for the life of me I could not connect with. After the first two chapters she bored me to death. I got wayy too much details on everything she done like washing her hair, toweling her hair, brushing her teeth, etc etc etc, multiple times throughout the book. Along with going to every stinking college class and what every lecture was about. One time I got multiple definitions recited. Who freaking cares?! I don't!!! So many pointless conversations was another boring thing. The dialogue made me want bang my head on something hard. And the insta-love. Wow. The main character and guy hadn't even spoken two sentences to each other and she was totally obsessed. The guy keeps doing this staring contest with her and not speaking then disappearing, Multiple times. It was so creepy and annoying. He wasn't the only Edward from Twilight though. There were a few people. The character development never improved throughout the book and the plot was just a mess. Things that actually did happen besides staring were after 50% of the book. Important characters that were villians just disappeared. The things that the main character says she feels doesn't add up to her actions. Attempted rape that happens in the book was dealt with very poorly. There was so much repeats even 70% in the book it was just sad. DNF at 71%.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
"The Concealed" is a mystery/ magical adventure with a medieval twist that is told from the point of view of Evelyn Lakewood, an orphan who is just starting college at Oxford. The characters are realistic including the heartthrob, Jared, the best friend, Sally, and the scone-serving Ruth. There was a certain event that took place where I felt Evelyn should have gone directly to the police, and in some places the story seemed a bit drawn out, but the ending is top notch. Be warned that this is only the first book in a series, and the cliff hanger ending will leave you wanting more!
So, this book has engaged me right in the beginning. I feel very bad and empathic towards the character. I know how it feels to lose loved ones. Evelyn has lost everyone she cares about most in her life but decides to go to the college that her sister wanted her to attend. I think this is a great book. I have really enjoyed trying to figure how Jared fits into Evelyn’s life and what the Amulet has to do with everything. I didn’t have any problems with the translation at all either. I would be very happy to read book two in this series.
The Concealed is a refreshing change from the predictable plot-lines which seem to be all through Ebooks now. I literally had two OMG moments. Out loud! I enjoyed an afternoon reading this book and if this is Sarah Kleck's first book, I am very much looking forward to her future works.
This book is amazing!I wasn't expecting so much to happen but it was great !The ending though,it left me with all the feels! This book made me cry, laugh, and through my kindle right to Felix;) (get it?!) can't wait for the next book!
