I've definitely read this volume of Honey and Clover before, since I recognized all of the story elements as I read through it. I'm pretty sure I stopped here, or not long after this, the last time around, and I'm still rather lost as to why. Hagu and Morita aren't behaving anywhere near as weirdly as they were in the first book, and they were the major point of friction for me while I was rereading v. 1.

Maybe it was because I only actively like one character, and that's Ayu. She's emotionally forthright (even when she's trying to conceal her emotions), the ironman thing is kind of cute in an otherwise feminine-looking character, and she's responsible: taking care of her end-of-year projects well on time, looking after Hagu while the prof is away, and taking care of the liquor store when her family is ill, with no resentment or complaint. When the story focuses on the weirdos or the boring people (I'm looking at you, Hayama and Takamoto), I'm not as invested.

Hayama getting a job, and the prof taking a sabbatical for research, are foreshadowing of the breakup of the band, and the characters' eventual transition to adult life. A melancholy thought. The group scenes are a large part of this manga's charm, so I hope the remainder of the story keeps them together as much as possible.

1) I wonder whether I should be creeped out by the fact that so many people are fascinated with Hagu. I love Hagu and think she's super interesting and all that, but Morita and Takemoto basically fell in love with her at first sight because she was ... small? I think? Which is a bit disturbing.

2) Mayama is more likeable in the manga, I think. Or maybe I am just trying harder to see what Aya sees in him. I don't think I'll ever be fond of him; he is such a jerk.

I mentioned in my review of volume one that I was confused as to what the main storyline of this manga series is... and from volume 2, I'd guess it's really nothing? It seems what this series is all about is just the development of the characters and their love interests. I'm not sure if this is an accurate assumption, it is only what the volumes have shown me thus far.

Hagu is a cute character...but I am still slightly disturbed by her... in this volume she's 19... still looks and acts like an 8 year old though. Still slightly concerned that Morita and Takemoto have a thing for her...

I was happy with the sudden appearance of Yamada all the time now. Now SHE is a character I can like. I love girls like her that kick butt! And of course, underneath that tough exterior is the dark abyss of a broken heart, but she makes for an interesting character.

I don't dislike this series, but I also don't love it. It's interesting enough to keep me reading, but sometimes I feel like the manga-ka is trying waaay too hard to be silly and outrageous. There were a lot of moments in this volume that were meant to be funny but I just felt like it was so obviously a point to get laughs that it wasn't even funny. Don't get me wrong, those crazy, silly, outrageous moments are one of the main reasons I love manga....but sometimes in this manga it doesn't seem natural, it seems like the manga-ka was just trying too hard. Which is unfortunate.

On to volume 3!

Honey and Clover 10 Volume Series by Chica Umino

The series was very bittersweet, and perhaps if you don't want a lingering unfinished romance set during college years, among artists, it's probably not for you. But I really enjoyed the soul-searching of a young architect who finds solace in temple restoration, and a petite sculptor who wants nothing more than to paint gigantic landscapes and flowers instead. There are others, and they all have their own journeys. It's slice-of-life, and there are some meandering romances, but I don't think any of them is ever really resolved. There's also a fairly bizarre parody of Peter Jackson/George Lucas that transported the series into Sci-Fi territory just to give a breath of air... I think.

Pages: 1,970 (Roughly 200 pages per volume)
Year: March 4, 2008 to June 1, 2010 (original run: June 2000 – July 28, 2006)
Publisher: Viz Media (original publisher in Japan: Shueisha)

Read: 31 December 2016 to 1 January 2017
Stars: 4.5 (adored it)

I’m not a drama lover. This manga series is very meaningful. It’s not princess like fairy tale drama. Definitely not for young people.

You will only understand the deep meaning to every words once you experienced them. This series is grown up and some young viewers will find it boring.

It was so interesting because I felt the importance of friendship of family from this story. Hero’s journey of this manga is good.

This volume has the iconic clover field scene. Also the hilarious twister match between Takemoto and Morita. There's more information about Rika which gives a fuller picture of her as a character. There's also Takemoto's visit to see his mother and his ambivalence about his stepfather. To me, it is one of the best vignettes of the series as it is so honest and genuine in its poignancy.

That said, it also has some aspects of obsessive love that may make some a little uncomfortable. That the characters are called out on their weirdness helps dilute it, but... honestly, Mayama still creeps me out a little. I sort of forgot that because his seiyuu went on to become the fantastic Gintoki in "Gintama" but yikes, this volume brings back the stalkery aspect of his character.

Overall though, it is solid volume. I really like Hagu in this volume. Along with Takemoto, she really shines in this volume.

I wish the next books in the series would continue to focus on the love triangle drama instead of the building instead of the building relationship between Hagu and Takemoto because in my opinion, the love triangle arc is more interesting and allows for more creative freedom. In Vol.1, the author, Chica Umino writes about Takemoto's developing feelings for Hagu, but throughout both the first two volumes, he doesn't act upon, leaving a boring relationship between the two, unlike the drama that takes place in the second volume between Rika, Mayama, and Yamada. In summary, I wish the central relationship aspects focused more on the love triangle as it makes for a more cultivating and interesting story.

I really enjoyed this volume. I just love the characters. Also, I really like the omnipotent narrator's voice that will run commentary on what is going on. It's a nice touch, and it often makes me chuckle. One of my favorite things about the volumes I've read so far is the focus on many types of relationships. Romantic love is the focus, but the friendships between the characters are just as important to the story, and that makes me happy.

Well, the pining is everywhere in this story. I don't like the dude staking the teacher he has a crush on, either. It's not cute or romantic when she has already turned him down. And the young woman l who likes him even though he loves the other woman? *sigh* I think this is a common trope, and I really don't want to see them get together in the end. Three stars for the other characters, who all seem to have a life and art concerns beyond love.

Part 2/2 of my Contemporary-a-thon challenge of 2018 : Read a Contemporary-ish graphic novel.

This volume only proves that the series gets better and better as it continues to dip into the main casts' drama, mentality and life goal challenges. And as always Yamada and Mayama continue to break my heart

Overall Rating: A
Summary: A Comedy/Drama/Romance shōjo manga series created by Chika Umino, which follows three students at a fictional art college in Tokyo. The students, Yūta Takemoto, Takumi Mayama and Shinobu Morita, all live in the same apartment complex. Takemoto is the youngest, and is the shy artist-type one would expect to find at an art school. Mayama is the most reasonable of the three, and is a stark contrast to Morita, who is still in college because he can't wake up in time to go to classes. Morita works a mysterious job where he is gone for days at a time, comes back with lots of money and food, and then crashes for 48 hours.

Enter Hagu, an adorable 18 year-old girl who appears, and often acts, like a small child. She's also one the daughter of one of their professor's cousins (I think that's like 1st cousin once removed or something, but I was always bad at that stuff), and is an extremely skilled artist, particularly with pottery. Takemoto and Morita both immediately fall in love with her, and the love triangles commence (oh yeah, there are lots).

The first volume is primarily focused on introducing the characters, and what their lives are like, as well as establishing some of their relationships.

I admit it, this one sucked me in right away. I am a sucker for good shōjo and this is an excellent example of one. The characters are well-developed, and the romantic entanglements are interesting. I don't want to give too much away here, but it's already drawing me in with the first volume. I will say that the image below is of Morita trying to get Hagu to pose as a "koropokkur" (faerie). <3

Esznek, esznek, isznak(Yamada),esznek.
:DDD
Mindegy. Ez az egyik legszebb rész számomra.
Kedvenc részek közé tartozik még,amikor a folyóparton négylevelű lóherét keresnek mindannyian. Keressük a csodát…mondja Takemoto.És igaza van.. :)
Egyszerűen imádom, mikor Hagu és Ayu főznek, azok olyan vicces részek..amiylen kotyvalékokat ők képesek alkotni..:D Haláliii:DDD Akárcsak a TWISTER játék,amit Morita dob össze gyorsban vagy ezer színből:DDD

Buhahahaa... Saikou da!! Koko no hanashi wa.. \(≧∇≦)/

Hadiah ulang tahun buat Takemoto, bikinin permainan Twister ajaib! Bayangin aja!

Heuheuu..

Enjoying this series more. This volume was a little serious, dealing with the pasts of Takemoto, Rika, and Hagu, and Mayama's plans for the future. More romantic tension with our two love triangles. Poignant moments too, like the scene in the clover field.
Some hilarious laugh-out-loud moments, like that ridiculous game of Twister, the psychotic poodle, Yamada's masterpiece, and Morita still struggling to graduate! The well-timed over-the-top art makes it even funnier. Looking forward to more of this series.

I liked volume 2 better than volume 1. There is a more in depth look at the characters in this manga and what they are going through. They become much more real. (These are mainly college students in art school.) Some love triangles going on and a lot of sadness.

I'm still disturbed by the drawing of Hagu. She's 19 and is drawn to look and act like she's 9. She apparently does look like she's 9. Is she seriously immature? Is something wrong with her? Mentally, physically? Why are these guys crazy about her?

The story arcs are really starting to gather steam. I enjoyed the use of flashbacks and inner monologue from the characters. The change in art style from chibi to the more normal whispy Honey & Clover lines really helped to emphasize the dramatic passages.

Ayumi seemed the most tragic to me from the anime. It will be interesting to see if I have the same opinion from the manga.

The scene between Mayama and Yamada and the hunt for the 4-leaf clover are two of my favorite scenes in the series. I continue to love the sense of time passing and Takemoto's narration. I do wish Viz would use a less slangy translation; it was distracting here at times.

Still like this story. The college kids had me laughing in some of the parts but in this one it had some sad moments. Especially with Sensei going away for a year. But this is still a cute and funny series to read.

Takemoto goes back to his hometown for the first time in years to face his stepfather he resents for stealing his mother away. While Ayu and Mayama's feelings for each other bubble to the surface. Ahh, this semester reeks sour and sweet the smell of youth.

I enjoyed. It is slowly building the more dramatic/emotional elements volume by volume of the merely comedic ones which were used as a strong narrative hook in the beginning.

Not perfect, but just funny and touching enough for me....

On to volume 3.
