Classical Mythology in Context encourages students to directly encounter and explore ancient myths and to understand them in broader interpretative contexts. Featuring a modular structure that coincides with the four main components of a classical mythology course--history, theory, comparison,

ভিক্টোরিয়া যেভাবে ক্লাসটা সাজিয়েছিল, সেভাবে পড়লে হয়তো আরও অনেক বেশি উপভোগ করতাম। কিন্তু এই বইটাকে এক মুহুর্তের জন্যও টেক্সটবুক মনে হয় নি, সেটার কৃতিত্ব কার? লেখককে যট্টুক দেব, ঠিক ততটুকুই ভিক্টোরিয়াকে দিতে হবে আমার।
গ্রিক মিথোলজির উপর বই আমি আগেও পড়েছি, তবে সেসব বাংলায়। এমসি কলেজ ছবির মতো সুন্দর। এত সবুজ একটা ক্যাম্পাসে সগৌরবে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে আমাদের কলেজ লাইব্রেরি। আমি অনেক লাইব্রেরি দেখেছি, কিন্তু এখনও ওই লাইব্রেরির উঁচু সিলিং আমাকে মুগ্ধ করে। লাইব্রেরিটা এত সুন্দর হওয়ার পরও সেখানে বই খুঁজতে গেলে মেজাজ খারাপ না হয়ে রক্ষা ছিল না। নতুন যা বই, তা সব ছিল শেখ মুজিবকে নিয়ে। আর পুরনোগুলো অন্তত আমার কোনো কাজের মনে হয় নি। ঐ এত বড় আস্তাকুড়ের মধ্যে আমি গ্রিক এবং রোমান মিথোলজির উপর একটা বই খোঁজে বের করেছিলাম (লেখকের নামটা মনে নেই)। সেটা তখন গোগ্রাসে পড়েছি, পড়ে কিছুই শিখি নি। কেন শিখিনি সেটা লিসা মাউরিতজিওর এই বই হাতে নেওয়ার পর পরই আমার বোধে ঠেকতে শুরু করে।
এসব নিয়ে আগে যা পড়েছি, সেসব প্রায় সবগুলোই ছিল গল্পভিত্তিক। প্যান্ডোরার বক্স থেকে শুরু করে অ্যাকিলিসের বীরগাথা, এ সবকিছুই কালজয়ী গল্প। এ বইয়েও এসব নিয়ে বিস্তর আলোচনা আছে, কিন্তু এসবকে নিছক শিক্ষামূলক গল্প হিসেবে উপস্থাপন করে মিথোলজির কোরটা হত্যা করা হয় নি। শুরু থেকেই গুরুত্ব দেওয়া হয়েছে মিথোলজিক্যাল ফিগারগুলোকে। জিউস, হেরা কিংবা ডায়ানায়সিস, এদের সাথে আমাদেরকে (পাঠক) এমনভাবে পরিচিত করার মহাত্মটা পরবর্তীতে গিয়ে বুঝা যায়। যখন সব সুতো এক হয়ে আসে, তখন সবকিছুই এক মস্ত বড় উপন্যাসে পরিণত হয়, যার আদিপর্ব কখনো লেখা হয় নি।
লেখক বেশ বড় এক অংশ ব্যায় করেছেন শিল্পসাহিত্যে মিথোলজির উপস্থাপন নিয়ে। চরিত্রগুলোর সাথে এমন একাত্মবোধ এখানেও বেশ কাজে এসেছে। নানা পেইন্টিং নিয়ে কখনো আগ্রহ জাগে নি, কারণ সেখানে উপস্থাপিত চরিত্রগুলোই আমার অজানা ছিল। আমরা হয়তো গল্প মনে রাখি না, মনে রাখি চরিত্র। আমি যেমন টমাস শেলবিকে কখনো ভুলতে পারব না, ঠিক তেমনই ওডেসিয়াসকে ভুলা মুশকিল হবে।
শেষদিন ভিক্টোরিয়াকে জিজ্ঞেস করেছিলাম ও আমাদেরকে এত ক্লাসিক পড়িয়েছে কেন (বাকাই, ইলিয়াড, ওডেসি এবং এনিয়্যাডের নানা অংশ)। ওর উত্তরটা অদ্ভুত ছিল, যারা লেখালেখি করতে চায় তাদেরকে একাধিক গল্পের প্লট দিয়ে দেওয়া। এই অদ্ভুত উত্তরই আমার সাথে অনেকদিন থেকে যাবে, এই অদ্ভুত সুন্দর সেমিস্টারটার মতোই।

A good textbook that provides a good comprehensive introductory overview of the Greek pantheon along with a smattering of information about how Greek mythology compares to the mythology of other ancient cultures, theories based on myth, and modern interpretations of myth. Not bad for what it is, however I would prefer to learn the myth in one class, then compare it, learn about theory, and delve into modern interpretation in another class or classes. If a class is trying to do it all, this is a pretty good book for it.

yes i read this for class yes i really enjoyed it and now i have an interest in greek mythology, and many opinions on it. as the narrative guy i really enjoyed the sections on fairy tale, mythological, greek tragedian and heroic journey structure.

Very informative and perceptive. I also enjoyed the added layer of exploring how the ancient myths and practices are still present in modern culture.

This was prescribed reading for my The Myths of Greece and Rome class. This was an excellent textbook and had a lot of historical/archaeological background information that helped me understand what I was reading. Mythology is new to me, and so that helped.
I mainly focused on the scene at a banquet among the gods on Olympus in which a quarrel takes place. However, the question in Chapter 10 made it easier to dissect the characterisation of Achilles in the Iliad.
