She cleverly orchestrated his downfall ...

Lady Anne Severne was incensed when her brother-in-law, the marquess of Crewe, accused her of being a trollop. He was convinced that Anne's husband had died in a duel while defending her honor. In reality, the errant spouse had paid for a gambling debt with his life.

But Anne was too proud to deny the scathing allegations. Instead she devised a scheme that would embroil the stiff-necked marquess in a most embarrassing scandal. If the plan succeeded, Crewe would suffer untold humiliation.

Anne didn't expect, however, to fall in love with the object of her retaliation....

Widow Lady Anne is confronted at her country estate by her brother-in-law, who believes her to be a scandalous trollop based on letters he received from his brother asking for money. Needless to say these are lies and the brother is the one with the bad reputation. When the Marquess of Crewe reveals she has been left an inheritance from his father but that he is the trustee, she blackmails him into taking her to London for the season and determines to somehow make him do something scandalous. She nicknames him Pastor Max. This had an interesting premise but everything was a little over the top and the revenge just kept going. Then there was a quick end. I would have preferred a more gradual change in both their attitudes.
