The Comeback: It's Not Too Late and You're Never Too Far
Have you ever longed for a comeback? We all know what it feels like to have life disappoint us and not work out as we’d hoped. We all know what it’s like to long for something different, something better, something more. The Comeback celebrates new beginnings. It offers encouragement and perspective, and it’s for you if you feel frustrated or confused, if you’re sorrowing or in pain, if you’ve made mistakes or are grieving, if you’re disappointed or feel as though life doesn’t make sense. The good news is that God is in the business of giving fresh starts to people. He gives hope to the hopeless. Direction to the directionless. Help to those who need help. God is always good, all the time, and God’s plans will always prevail, even when our plans don’t. God already knows what the solutions are. No matter what kind of disappointment or grief or pain or trouble or heartache you encounter, God always offers a new beginning, a change of heart, or a powerful spiritual turnaround. God offers the way forward, and his pathways are always good. Your current circumstances will not get the final say in your life. God is the God of the comeback, no matter what kind of challenge you’re facing. And your story can become a great comeback story too.

"The big idea of this book is that at some point everybody needs a fresh start, a change of direction, a spiritual turnaround, a new beginning." (Page 161)
That's a summation of what this book is about. Now I want to talk about something else.
This is the epitome of a modern “Christian Living” book. I’m about to give a very negative review, but it isn’t Louie Giglio’s fault. He is a great pastor/speaker, and one of my favorite people to listen to online. I really respect him.
No, this time, the fault is my own. I should know what I’m getting into when I pick up a generic Christian Living book, but I continue to be disappointed. I usually give these generic books a 3-star rating because even from a surface-level book, you can typically glean some good, practical applications from it. This time, however, I rated this book lower than a 3-star rating because it was the straw that broke the camel’s back. This one had me asking questions like:
-“Does this book really need to exist?”
-“What is it adding to the world that can help people?”
-“Would this book ever be considered someone’s favorite read?”
-“Will this book legitimately have an impact on someone’s walk with Christ, or am I just reading another book that turned sermon notes into a non-fiction read?”
-"How many years will it be before this book is totally forgotten?"
Many of these questions don’t just apply to Giglio’s book, but would apply to a ton of other Christian Living books that have come out over the last 10-15 years.
These types of books are not deep. While they are about God, they are almost always more about the reader and how their lives can potentially be improved. I think of classics like “Knowing God” and “Mere Christianity,” and I am immediately struck by how deep they are and how their words glorify God. This book and the many others like it are all very “Surface-Level Christianity.”

My favorite chapters were easily 7 and 8. 7 talks about Peter's comeback, after denying Jesus and going back to his fishing. Jesus comes to him and asks him to eat breakfast. No long talks. No figure things out. Just come and share a meal and settle down. His mercies are new every morning, and he takes a moment to remind Peter of his mercy and faithful provision before gently and squarely telling Peter that it's not about his efforts, and it's never going to be: it's about Jesus working through his failures.
Chapter Eight talks about Jesus being enough: "The sustaining grace you receive in the first moment is different than the grace you receive in the second. And the grace received in the second moment is different than the grace received in the third moment. And in the fiftieth moment. And in the two thousandth moment. And in every moment after that." Jesus offers individualized grace for every different phase and struggle of the dark places we go through. He doesn't offer us someone else's grace, or last month's grace, or even yesterday's grace. The grace I need for this moment. Some things--like death, amputation of a limb, etc.--are things from which a comeback can never restore to what was. But Jesus is enough, in himself, even through that loss. Giglio also says there will be hard days even after the comeback. Many times the comeback is a process after the initial moment of release and turnaround.
In chapter eleven, Giglio talks about our identity as believers, using Paul's introduction to the Ephesians. Even starting the epistle with the word "Paul" packs a huge comeback into a name. The persecutor of the church was now an apostle of God. Paul writes to the Ephesians as "saints in Christ Jesus". Giglio points out that he could have called them "sinners saved by grace". But that's not what their identity was anymore. Christ Jesus turns us into saints. And we live up to our identity. Instead of focusing on what we were, we need to focus on what we now are in Christ. Giglio says, "If you go around thinking of yourself as a sinner saved by grace, then it becomes highly likely that you'll see yourself primarily as a sinner first and saved by grace second. And when you go around calling yourself a sinner, you're much more likely to act like a sinner, even if you're saved by grace." In other words, you live up to your identity. I think I need to update my terminology.
If you're looking for a deeply Christianese theological book on the disappointments of life, you'll find this one has a different mission focus. It's a blue jeans and mocha kind of book, with a casual conversational style. And that's very intentional. A lot of people need a comeback, not just scholarly book lovers. This book is written to be accessible to a wide variety of people. As a person who is used to going down deep, staying down long, and coming up dry, that took a little bit of adjustment. But I can appreciate the purpose, and value the audience for which it was intended.
Much to inspire and to think about, and packed with examples of people from Scripture and real life who hit bottom and turned around again. I appreciate Louie Giglio's ministry to people in hurting places.

THE COMEBACK It's Not to Late and You're Never Too Far, by Louie Giglio, is a powerful and inspirational book about comebacks, turnarounds, fresh starts, and new directions.
Whatever the problems you may be experiencing, God already knows what the solutions are. A must read for any age, or wherever you are along your spiritual journey.
God is in the business of giving fresh starts. Hope to the hopeless, direction to the directionless, help for those who need help. God always prevails. No matter what kind of grief, pain, trouble, or heartache we encounter, God can provide for our needs.
Whether your sin is quiet (mind and heart; hate, or lust, or perhaps you think your sin is not hurting anyone), or overt and public; everyone knows you are leading a defiant life. Possibly, you cannot forgive, a wound festering and growing. You are loaded with bitterness, hatred, and resentment. From legalism, rage, shame, built, intellectualism, entitlement, arrogance, jealousy, disappointment, or disillusionment.
At some point everyone needs a fresh start. A change of direction, a spiritual turnaround, a new beginning. No matter what you have done. You can experience a Comeback.
Sometimes God allows our lives to be stripped down to the bones, in order for us to reach out to find Him. When things are going great, it’s far easier to forget God--hardest time to be close to God. As soon as the great job or relationship, or someone is hurting or dying, that is when we turn to God. Sometimes He strips away the earthly things we cling to, in order to get us back to the center of our existence. The times when life is difficult-- are the times when we make the most progress and see the most rewards in our personal relationship with God. (we have all experienced these low times).
The Bible says that spiritual death is very real. Spiritual death is something we’re born into. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Rom. 3:23). The Enemy wants to steal, kill, and destroy. Jesus has a way to get you off the stretcher. From stretchers of sinking, disappointment, unmet expectations, wrong decisions, grief and pain.
Louie refers to many stories in the Bible, along with some his own life experiences, of family, his dad's illness, friends, and those from his ministry. He shares honestly his journey through unsure times.
People successfully overcoming obstacles as part of their comeback process. From hurt, addictions, sorrow, loss--to healing, addiction-free, joy, to gain. They are powerful and encouraging. They have overcome, and set free.
However, he also addresses those who do not get a happy ending. Sickness, death, loss. How could those be examples of comebacks? What if there is no way possible to have a comeback?
Sustaining grace. The moment-by-moment grace. God gives for each and every moment of intense grief, frustration, sorrow, agony, or pain. Specific. Timely. Personal. This is the type of grace God gives when you get the phone call that changes your life forever. Death of a loved one. There is grace for everything. What you need, to hold you together. A different grace for each circumstance. This grace is what God gives to you when you have nothing left. Hope.
We all need a good comeback story. Whether our problems are spiritual, emotional, physical, mental, relational, financial or directional. Whatever they are, God sees our need, and comes through. From sin, waywardness, mistakes and failure. He comes through in his time and in His way.
God is the God of the Comeback, no matter what kind of challenge you’re facing.
Lots of interesting questions. What if Jesus had stayed dead? Without the resurrection, we’ve got nothing. Jesus is alive. He is able and your comeback is ready to begin.
On a personal note: Was delighted when I discovered Louie’s book on NetGalley. Reminds me of the old days in Atlanta.
In 1994, I relocated to Atlanta from and started attending the weekly 7:22 Bible studies led by Louie and Bill Willits, for singles. At the time it was held at Dunwoody Baptist before it moved to Northpoint/Buckhead. It was AMAZING! 3,000 singles weekly for worship and teaching-- until 2008.
I attended the First Baptist Atlanta-Charles Stanley, and then onto the old Avon building warehouse on 285, led by Andy Stanley, while building North Point. I met so many friends and stayed connected for years, even outside of church (they became part of my family). In 2002, my job relocated me from Atlanta to Florida. In 2004, I returned to Atlanta to the Buckhead/Midtown area for a few years, and was delighted to discover Buckhead Church (Andy Stanley’s Northpoint Church). Louie spoke at many of our services. Seems like yesterday, we started out a variety of locations, and then the old Harris Teeter building on Roswell Road. (before the new building at GA 400 was built). I joined the church and became very active as a pre-school director, and a small group women’s leader. I treasure these times at the church with the original team (some a part of Louie’s church now).
In 2006, my work took me back to South Florida, relocating to West Palm Beach, FL, where I currently reside. Several years ago, met another dynamic leader, Rev. Jimmy Scroggins, where I joined First Baptist Church West Palm Beach, FL (Family Church Downtown). We are building many satellite churches, for outreach in the surrounding area.
I have been very fortunate to have great leaders, ministers, teachers, and mentors in my life. It was nice catching up with Louie and Shelly, and their extraordinary Passion Ministry- still going strong yet today! As always, Louie is such a dynamic speaker, communicator, and author; instrumental in reaching thousands of youth all over the world. He speaks honestly about his life and his incredible journey. Further indicating God works in own great ultimate way. Highly Recommend.

This title really resonates with me. I’ve always enjoyed Giglio’s approach to most subjects, and how he teaches is engaging and relatable while still focusing on Scripture. I’ve had different struggles, disconnects, and seasons to where I’ve needed a comeback or simply to come back to Jesus. Giglio’s stories alongside biblical accounts really bring home this point: it’s never too late, & you’re never too far.

God remembers and our response is praise
I am a little conflicted with this one. I am familiar with Louie Giglio. I have listened to him in different venues and you can check him out yourself on YouTube. He is a tremendous communicator and has reached thousands of college students. Young people today desire to make a difference in this world. Nothing wrong with that desire, however, in that desire we lose sight of a holy God and our need for salvation and the Lordship of Christ with the saving work of the Cross. The title itself suggests that it is more us centered than God-centered.
Giglio’s heart is for the gospel and for the gospel to be reached. He has a strong faith and has lived out his life in faith. He shares his testimony and those of others, however, in sharing testomony, it is easy to compare and faith becomes fragile when circumstances are not ideal. You can still be waiting for that comeback but when in reality the comeback is Jesus himself. He touches on this briefly but I think a reader needs to be careful about reading into that I am created for God and not that God is created for me. This book is what I call “hype”, it can get you excited about the things of God but just like going to Christian camp and then going out to the real world, we wonder where God is and what he is doing.
The message on grace is encouraging but not costly. Is it more about how strong my will not to give up or worship? Is this a life changing book? For some, it will be but for others it might seem like any other book in a sea of other Christian books. Your answer depends on what you want from God.
For me I struggle with a mundane Faith. It is in the mundane that my faith grows or fizzles. It is a study like this that Christianity is more about splitting the Red Sea than worship. So instead of a comeback how about a bow down and humble my heart so I can know Him.

Adversity will come, whether it be from our own decisions or unforeseen circumstances. Giglio wants us to know a sovereign God sits above the fray and that His plans will prevail.
God is in the business of giving fresh starts to people. God sees our needs. He has good in mind for us. Difficult circumstances do not always have the final say in our lives. Yet, Giglio knows that problems won't always be solved. God offers His presence and in that a deeper solution is found. The solution is not our trying harder but in a relationship with Jesus
Giglio draws many lessons from biblical stories and his own experiences. We learn from Joseph, for example, that our story is part of God's story. We learn from Samson that it is never too late and we are never too far gone. We learn from Lazarus that it may not work out the way we had planned.
While God is in control of our comeback, we do need to acknowledge our condition and submit ourselves to Him. Once we have done that, God is able to restore us by His grace. Then we must respond - get up and get going.
Giglio realizes there are times when there won't be a comeback, like in the death of a spouse. Not every story has a happy conclusion on this side of eternity. And we may never know the “why.” But we do have Jesus and He can become enough for us.

I love Louie!
This a great book, especially if you're in a season where you need a comeback.

We all have an ability to have a relationship with almighty God.
As we follow Jesus, life is far less predictable than we figure it's going to be.
Adopt the attitude of relying on a great and sovereign God to orchestrate the plans and purposes and direction of our lives.
God is looking for people to take steps based not on age but on how we're gazing at his greatness.
If we are fighting against the little things, then God won't lead us to anything bigger.
You cannot control the outcomes, but you can determine how you will order your steps around his Word. Breathe out all the stress, because these are your only tasks today:
1. Trust in the Lord, and do good.
2. Dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
3. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
4. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.
This a great book, especially if you're in a season where you need a comeback.

I think everyone should read this book. In some point in your life you have gone through something you thought you were never going to get out of. Or maybe you fell so hard you thought you were never getting up. This book takes you through some of the comeback stories you can find in the bible and explains how anyone can stumble and fall and how God’s grace and mercy provided a comeback for them and provides one for us now.
I love this book. Is so refreshing and it does something absolutely great and important it points you back to Jesus.

This was a tough one for me because I grew up listening to Louie Giglio. He was my first camp pastor as a teen and remember hearing him preach on several occasions.
This book is very moralistic and not centered on the gospel even though Louie writes the gospel but he does it in context to a comeback and that Jesus' resurrection was the ultimate comeback.
Can't recommend this book.

The book is titled "Comeback" and talks about how it is never too late and you can never be too far away from God for Him to accept you. So it is about comebacks, and second chances, and it is about how God can use you where you are - not where you think you need to be to be acceptable. The author speaks about this being God's story, and our lives are a part of that. It's not about who I am or where I am, but about being open to who God is and where He wants me.
I enjoyed this book! While I marked several passages, it was not a specific passage that led me to my own Comeback inspiration, but in the contemplation of how to apply what I've been reading. And this is as it should be for such a book which is part sermon and part biography.
In my case, I'm looking to transition from being an independent contractor back into corporate life - yes, I'm looking for a FT job. But I'm over 50 which for many in HR, means I'm close to retirement. So why take a chance on me? Besides the obvious - that people who stay with a company 5+ years anymore, is rare - I re-calculated my own retirement math. It goes something like this (simplified version):
My grandparents were retired for less than 20 years before passing on.
My parents have been retired 20 years already and are still going strong.
I am healthy both mentally and physically, and based on my family history, I could live to see triple digits. Do I want to spend 30+ years being retired? Especially when I LOVE what I do? Not this gal...
While the math was fun to re-think the new possibilities I can see with my own career, the reality is that, I'm not dead so my path is not complete. Whether this means finding that job so I can keep doing what I love, or whether it means that God may show me a bend in that path that I can't see, this book was a solid reminder that God can still use me as part of His bigger story.

Have you been in a spirit ditch and looked for a way out? Well, I know I have. That’s why when The Comeback came onto my scene, I immediately reached out for it. I wanted to know exactly how God might be working in my life to order a complete turnaround. The answer basically takes a whole book to unravel. There’s a lot going on with God’s comebacks, and you’re basically on His plan, not yours. (Which again ties into that whole Step Three experience talked about in an earlier review.)
If you’re a fan of good Christian comeback stories, you’re going to find these in spades. Of course, the ultimate comeback story is Jesus being resurrected (which takes up the whole final chapter of this book). Now, I’m not exactly a whole fan of that Jesus died for your sins and was resurrected to pay the wages of sin thing. Giglio is. However, by the time I got to reviewing this book, I pretty much began to see this element of my faith as being conversational. It’s like, “I don’t believe that’s why Jesus died”. Giglio cites Paul in saying that if you don’t believe that, you’re still living in sin. Me? “I’m not sure I believe in the concept of sin, per se, either.” I’m not sure what Giglio’s comeback (sorry, pun) for that would be, but I basically found myself respecting his opinion, even if it differed from my own.

Weaving stories from Scripture and stories of people he has known, Louie Giglio, writes about what it truly means to have a comeback, as the title suggests.
I'm going to quote a small section in Acknowledgements at the end of the book: "Jesus is the reason the word comeback is in our vocabulary. He is ultimate in all things, and my hope in these pages is that he will be seen and savored and adored. I love you, Jesus." - from The Comeback, by Louie Giglio, page 224
I love that this book is Christ-honoring. 3 stars on good reads means I liked the read. In this case, it is just not something I would call memorable. I would read a bit and try to think back to what I read, and I think this is something that, by this time next month, I will mostly have forgotten, so it won't be added to a list of favorites. The purpose of the book is to share encouraging stories of others who experienced incredible comebacks. It doesn't really contain practical steps to achieving one's comeback if steps are required, and I was expecting a bit more.

I gave this book 4/5 stars because there were points in the book where I felt a little lost. Other than those few times this book is incredible. Louie tells so many stories of incredible comebacks, all because of Jesus. These are the stories people need to hear. He also ties in a lot of scripture to compare to the stories from today. Many people struggle to believe in scripture because they don't see it. Everybody has a comeback story, but many don't think it's powerful enough. The power of story in itself is mind blowing. If you think about it, we learn almost everything from stories of the past. This book will show you what Jesus did for you, like die for your sins. He will give you the ultimate comeback.

I had heard of Louie Giglio a while ago, and he seemed like somebody I wanted to know more about. This is the first book I've read by him, and as you can see I highly recommend it. If you want to be sure that riches, good health, a job you love, restored relationships, etc., are guaranteed to be "the comeback" on the other side of whatever downward spiral you have experienced, or perhaps will, this book is not for you. However, if even among the worst that life keeps throwing at you, your attitude remains that Jesus himself in your life is enough, then you'll find hope in these pages. One small issue I had is that while I don't argue with the information he has about apologetics in proving who Christ is & what He did, it didn't seem necessary. But that's a minor thing.

This was a great read, and exactly what I needed right now. I saw Louie speak two years ago at a conference, and purchased this book with ever intention of reading it that summer. But, life has a way of moving on/redirecting/or perhaps it's just not time to read it yet.
Powerful message full of love and hope and encouragement. Thank you Louie (and Shelly), for being "real" and sharing the hard stuff with the world.
This is a must read if you're feeling down, forgotten, useless or used up. God has more for you!

Such a great book! I wasn’t sure if this book would be applicable to me, but it’s applicable to any Christian who wants to grow and to any body who seeks a positive change. Giglio was raw and honest about experiences in his own life, and he gave a wonderful perspective in how valley experiences are pathways to mountain top experiences. You are never too far out of reach for the hands of God. He’s there, even when you don’t feel it or see evidence of it. The dirt paths are the most productive in life.

This is the 2nd Louie Giglio book I have read. I love how Louie puts into words and shares his relationship with God. Jesus is alive and because of this we are saints. Yes that is right...saints...not because we earned but because Jesus died for it. So I choose to live under the truth that I am a saint. Louie uses many truths from the Bible to explain who we are in Christ and who we are not. Read this book...you will be grateful that you did.

The strength of this book is Giglio’s personal stories. Giglio gets characteristically vulnerable with us, and he has some great stories to share. There wasn’t much new contributed to my understanding of the biblical stories he references, but if you are new to Christian faith and longing for a comeback in your life, this book could be a good place to start.

This book is a game changer. It took me awhile to read only because of the depth and heaviness of the lessons that Louie Giglio was preaching. He included so many encouragements and reminders and then backed them with scripture. The Holy Spirit was definitely working through the pages of this book and in the stories of those mentioned in it.

This was good and sweet! It used a lot of the same bible stories and sentiments you would expect, but I'm sure many have found it touching!. I particularly liked the chapters where Louis shared his own experiences and took lessons from that. Also, I didn't know his dad designed the Chick-Fil-A logo! How neat!!!

This book felt a bit disjointed in places, like a patchwork quilt of previous sermons sown together or something like that. On the one hand it is for people who have lost their faith, or perhaps never had it but then it’s also for people full of faith who are going through something trying in their lives. I listened to it on Audible where it was just called Never Too Far.

You’re never too far gone. I loved how with each chapter, Giglio offered specific examples straight from scripture as well as examples in life today of people’s comebacks. It was such a good reminder that no matter what has happened in my life, I’m never too far gone. Jesus can bring me back to Him.

It was really a good and worthwhile read for new Christians or those who don't regularly read their Bibles. Easy reading, great Christian principles and wise insight. Maybe not for those who regularly study the Bible but definitely a worthwhile read for most.

I love Giglio, and while there is nothing wrong with this book there isn't really anything all that unique or useful about it either. I have a sneaking suspicion 3 months from now I will never remember I even read this book.

I think this book was a great book. It was a hard book though to read because there were so many truth I had to understand, not just with my mind but also with my spirit. It took a very long time to read through, but I felt like I got so much out of reading it. I can strongly recommend this book

I can't think of a reason to read this. Some decent stories but nothing here that isn't done better elsewhere. I'm sure I won't remember anything about it tomorrow (other than that Louie Giglio's dad designed the Chick-fil-A logo).

Louie is one of the most dynamic speaker of my generation, and this book in no way communicates that fact. The book was largely forgettable. I continue to read books in this genre hoping to find those that I can pass to my friends, or my kids. I would not do that with "The Comeback."
