Eloise Deacon has a deadline: deliver a hyena princess and ten grand in ransom money in less than two days, or Eloise will pay with her life. The only problem is, she can't find the princess and barely has two nickels to rub together. She'll need more than her mother's Medusa powers to stay alive -- until handsome Benedict Chase walks into her life.
Benedict Chase spends most of his time chasing trouble for his brothers. The girl with the silver eyes is clearly her own kind of trouble, but he's powerless to resist when his lion claims her. So what if her hair literally has a mind of its own and most of the shifters in the city are after her? She's exactly who he's been looking for, as long as she doesn't paralyze him by mistake.
But saving Eloise from the trouble she's in means risking a war with the hyenas, and it could drag every other shifter in the city into an interspecies civil war. Benedict knows she's worth it, but his brothers aren't so sure. Will he go against the Pride to save her, risking everything the Chase brothers have built?
In Chasing Trouble, the second story in the City Shifters, The Pride series we have Benedict and Eloise’s romance – and talk about opposites attract. Benedict comes from a very wealthy, prominent lion shifter family, he’s the lawyer for both the Pride and the family. Eloise is a former foster kid, street kid who has always been on just “this” side of the law – never anything huge but trouble nonetheless. When Benedict is bailing out his brother at the local jail he sees how Eloise is being treated by the police and make a split second decision to represent her. It doesn’t really take him long to know why he stepped in, his lion made it pretty clear that Eloise is their mate but she certainly is trouble with a capital T. In short order Eloise will steal his heart, his wallet and his clothes – and bring him and his pride into some serious undertakings that will have long reaching effects.
On some level, Eloise knows she’s been used and now set up to take the fall. While she’s having trouble believing that this is happening, she still has to make it right, and this sexy lawyer just might hold the key to getting out of this alive. But she’s spent too many years on her own to trust anyone else, her friends can only help so much. Can she really bring this world of danger that she’s in to Benedict’s door? His family already wants him far away from her and rightly so. But he’s convinced that they belong together and for the first time in her life, she wants to believe in that possibility so badly.
Chasing Trouble packs a serious punch with believable situations and realistic characters – yes, I know this is supernatural, but within that world, I can easily relate to what is happening. Eloise would easily be considered a myth, even in this world, and her powers and abilities have only begun to be tapped. If she can get control, she will be a formidable ally and feared enemy. Benedict and Eloise gave me many chuckle worthy moments, some serious sizzle and an enjoyable opposites attract couple that make perfect sense together. You’d think they don’t fit, but in reality they fill the gaps in each other and make a complete unit when together.
The world building continues to add depth to the series. The secondary characters are being fleshed out into people who will one day tell their own stories, but in the meantime they are becoming a strong, tightly knit group. Enemies are not always what they seem on the surface, and even when in doubt about motive some things are in the grey area and we’ll see how they turn out in later books, I’m sure. I really enjoyed this visit to Layla Nash’s world. It’s a fast paced, sexy, action filled story with layers upon layers to discover along the way. Never trust that you know everything until the final page is turned.
Fun read! Much better than the first book. The FMC is smart and relatable. Unfortunately the hero is underdeveloped, we don't get to know much about him except that he is protective of his female. The plot is interesting and I want to know more about the dynamics between shifter groups. I'll continue with the series.
Other than the fact that the timeline for happily ever after was a week, not counting the month of pouting, this was a good little story. He’s rich as Croesus and she’s talented and brave, how could it not be love at first sight.
This one was just TOO out there. A gorgon?! It was weird enough that there are lions, freaking badgers, wolves, hyenas, POLAR bears, jackals, etc. all living in one city. I just have too many questions. Is climate not a concern for shifters? And how is it possible that mates are different shifters/animals? That doesn’t make sense…and a gorgon thrown in the mix is just so bizarre. Isn’t that Greek mythology? Why are we throwing that in? It just seems so completely random.
And don’t even get me started on the insta-love in this series. I can’t even justify it as a fated mate connection because he doesn’t say they’re mates, just that “his kind knows right away when they like someone”. These characters literally have 1-3 interactions and they’re confessing love. And this one was worse than book one because of the heavy plot focus. There was even LESS time spent building their connection.
I just couldn’t overcome all the questions and random inconsistencies and the cheesiness. Like…I’m already reading shapeshifter paranormal fiction. I’m already stretching the limits of what I can wrap my head around. Do we really need to take it to an even deeper level? Maybe that’s just me. I don’t know.
I liked this book more than the first one. There's so much humour here and I have to say that for a lion, Benedict's instincts aren't really great, if he can get pickpocketed so easily and keep losing his clothes! No wonder his brothers are snickering!
Eloise was something else. It was refreshing to have someone so different in a shifter story. She's so alone and it was lovely how Benedict immediately decided he was going to stand by her, even if she kept running out on him, and even if Logan threatened to kick him out of the Pride. I loved that he would not give up on her even when things looked bleak and he stayed with her through it all.
Even though she's used to surviving alone and she's so tough, I really liked that Eloise knew when to ask for and receive help; she didn't try to do things alone just for the sake of looking strong. She didn't try too hard to push Benedict away once she realised that he was committed to helping her. I loved that there was a tenuous connection between Eloise and Natalia (who is the heroine from the first book) and we get to see cameos from Logan and Natalia.
>Book review – Chasing Trouble >I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 2nd in the City Sifters: The Pride series and ends in an HEA. Benedict, the clown of the Chase pride, discovers Eloise as she is being arrested. He realizes she is his mate and tries to befriend her. Eloise not only pickpockets Benedict’s wallet, but steals a second wallet and all of his clothes. Eloise is a gorgon medusa. She can turn people into stone with just a look. Her hair has a life of its own and is described as something between a cat’s tail and a snake. >Benedict goes to bat for Eloise with all different types of shifter, especially hyena and bear. I felt Benedict’s heartbreak when he realized why Eloise slept with him the first time. This book had all of the feels – romantic, suspenseful and humorous. Logan and Natalia are in this book, but Logan really comes across as rude. > The book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving the book 5 stars. This series is very good.
Eloise Deacon had one job. Drop the ransom money and collect the Hyena heiress. Except the Hyena wanted to elope with their enemy's son. It all goes sideways when not only does she lose the money, but the heiress & lover have been kidnapped and she lands in jail over something unrelated.
Benedict Chase is the family lawyer. And oftentimes, the one who is covering for their youngest brothers nightly activities.
It's during one such event that he meets Eloise and realizes without a second thought that she's his forever.
But a HEA is always hit with trials. As they try to navigate dangerous situations, and spiced love scenes, more questions than answers begin to take root.
Found the book entertaining. It would have been better if a few scenes, or off-handed comments, had been fleshed out better. Instead, it left me feeling confused and half satisfied.
However, I'm about to start book #3. Wonder how this Chase brother will fair.
I really love this series. Although they seem - at least so far - to be insta-love stories, it works with these characters being shifters. And even though the relationship grows quickly, it still feels natural and right, not forced like some insta-love stories. The depth of these characters and the creativity in developing the powers, especially of Eloise, is so incredible. There is so much emotion and great and love in these books, it's amazing. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys paranormal romance books with a lot of love, heat, emotion, and danger. Although I recommend this series be read in order to get the best experience possible as these books all take place within the same pride and family.
Very interesting heroine in Eloise. A half gorgon, half Medusa petty criminal with a caring heart. Unfortunately she ends up in serious trouble when helping her friend out. So sad about Cal, that was just horrible. Benedict was okay if at times a typical lawyer, alpha male. I did love how he totally backed Eloise, even though she stole and tricked him. And there were a few funny moments throughout. I enjoyed how Natalie has Logan under control, in a nice way. Will be interesting going forward as we had quite a few other shifter groups involved in this book and they now have a council to oversee future problems. Read in the box set.
Loved it! This was so good! I really loved reading about the heroine who was a half gorgon/half medusa and Benedict was so amazing and sweet <3 I really ended up like this story even though I didn't like that they jumped into bed so quickly. This is explained somewhat further into the story and I understood why in this book, compared to the other ones in her series, they got down to business so soon after meeting.
This was an awesome story. They met when he was bailing his brother and the police were bringing her in. They went for lunch where she stole his wallet. He called on one of his brothers for help, he found her again, but this time she stole everything, including his clothes. She didn’t know who had framed her and set out to find out. He helped her and together they solved the mystery, but at the meeting, she petrified herself, with the help of the bear shifter she came back to life. Loved it.

I thought I loved Logan in book 1, but Benedict my my my. 😉. This is the first shifter romance where the heroine was not human but not like other shifters either, which made the story that much more exciting.
Ms. Nash makes it impossible to love one Chase brother over another. They each have their own personalities that endear you to them from the start. To see Benedict fall in love with someone so different and to see the family/pride accept her inspite of her differences was great to read. I am a fan of her work.
(RabidReads.com)After reading book one, Thrill of the Chase, I knew I wanted to continue on with this series. If I thought the first one was good, I really thought this one was even better. Lion shifters? Bring them on!
The first book introduced the reader to a family of lion shifters, the Chase brothers. They are rich, powerful, and none of them were mated until Logan, the leader of their pride, found his mate, Natalia. This time around, Benedict, the lawyer, finds his mate-in the most unlikely place. While bailing out his brother, Atticus, he meets Eloise, when she is brought in to the police station. He is immediately drawn to her, and decides to defend her, regardless of the charges. Eloise, a former foster and street kid, makes her way doing things that are dubious in nature. She has a rap sheet, but nothing particularly dangerous. It’s just the way she has learned to survive. And the thing is, Eloise isn’t exactly human. And what she is supernaturally, is a creature that although I have heard of it(Greek mythology), I have never seen it used as a character. I am not letting on what she is, as you have to read awhile to figure it out. I found it to be very unique, although when I googled it, it seems Marvel comics uses it as a character, as well.
Eloise has got herself into quite the pickle this time. She was hired to deliver money to ransom the queen of the hyenas’s daughter, and when she went back, the money was gone and her friend Lacey(the daughter) was not returned. Now the queen has given her only a short period of time to come up with her missing $10,000 and Lacey unharmed-or else. Now that Benedict is in the picture, Eloise is hoping the pride or her wolf friends will help her. She’s pretty desperate and makes the mistake of thinking Benedict only wants her for sex in exchange for the help/money. She ended up being an extremely complex character, inherently good, but left in horrible circumstances and living the only way she can, especially with her”affliction.” As far as Benedict is concerned, he is just immediately smitten with her, and the mate thing just kind of happens-no aha moment to speak of, it just is.
What follows was not only a good, yet complex, romance, but also ended up being suspenseful and full of mystery as Eloise and Benedict race against the clock to figure out who took the money and where Lacey is being held. Time could be up for both Lacey and Eloise because you don’t want to cross the queen of the hyena’s. Couple all of this with what creature Eloise is and all the baggage that comes with it, and this book ended up being a page turner at times for me. I really like these lion shifter brothers and I recommend it to adult(due to sensual scenes)readers of paranormal romance.
Benedict Chase spends most of his time chasing trouble for his brothers but now he’s chasing his own kind of trouble as his lion has claimed a silver-eyed girl he’s powerless to resist in this thrilling paranormal romance.
Eloise has to find the hyena princess and ten grand in ransom money in less than two days so she’ll need more than her mother’s medusa powers to stay alive and the reader can’t help but get caught up in all the exhilarating trouble that follows as the chase begins. Like the first book in the series, the plot is well written, fast paced, smooth flowing and full of suspense, excitement and romance with strong captivating characters that draw readers into the story. Lots of sizzling chemistry heats up the pages between Benedict and Eloise but the relationship is quite troublesome considering Eloise is a gorgon with some pretty nifty abilities and with the fix that Eloise has found herself in there is plenty of adrenaline pumping excitement happening throughout this story, so there’s never a dull moment.
The author certainly caught me by surprise with this story, as a lion shifter and a gorgon make for one hot and unique couple and their story had quite a few surprises along the way, so I was glued to the pages and I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
Freakin' amazing This has friendship, mystery ,betrayal and lovers! Who could ask for more. Benedict chase is at the jail bailing out his younger brother when he see the police manhandling A young woman. He steps in to help, he's intrigued by the Tiny waif. Eloise is in a world of trouble, she's pissed off the queen of the hyena clan. Val hired Eloise to pay a ransom to get her daughter Lacey, back. But it all went to hell when the police showed up and the money went missing. Now Eloise has 24 hours to produce the money or Lacey,or Val is going to kill her. I can honestly say I've not read a paranormal romance that involved a Medusa before. The first thing I did when I finished this book was to see if there were anymore book by Layla with this cast of characters. Yes there are. This was the second book in this series.. I will be reading the first one next. *****This book was given to me by the author in exchange for a honest review***
Deliver 10 grand or the missing hyena princess...or die.
Eloise faces an impossible deadline, betrayal, trust issues and discovery of her fated mate. Add to the mix her gorgon side going out of control and it makes for a great story. Never heard of a gorgon before? Neither had I, but think Medusa and the ability to turn people to stone.
Benedict, a lion shifter lawyer, helps to solve the mystery of what happened with Eloise's ransom drop gone bad. I wasn't expecting who was behind the betrayal and that made the story all that much more enjoyable.
This was the second book in the series, but can be read as a stand alone story.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Can a criminal and a lawyer get together? A very well written story and it had me hooked right from the start. Benedict is a lawyer. He stops by the jail to bail out his brother who is in trouble again and ends up helping this tiny waif of a girl. He has to have her as soon as he sets eyes on her. Eloise is a criminal, not a violent one but a criminal nonetheless. She is attracted to him but thinks it will never work. She is in trouble with the queen of the hyenas and her friend the queen's daughter is missing. The suspense, romance and hot, sexy scenes will keep you on the edge of your seat.
I was given this e-book by the publisher for the purpose of an honest review. My conclusions are my own. I was not compensated in any way.
Given to me for an honest review. Benedict comes to bail out his brother and manages to bail someone else out. She looks ill and weak. The 2 cops are being especially rough with her. Benedict scares the cops when he says he is going to file excessive force and brutality complaints if they don't remove their hands from her. Benedict takes her to a restaurant to eat. He gets up to answer a phone call and she lifts his wallet. She disappears and expects to stay hidden from Benedict She also hopes her boss won't get rough with her when she tells Val that she doesn't have the ransom money. You know how hyenas shifters are but she isn't afraid of them. Why is Benedict hunting for Eloise, the woman from the jail? What is going on with all of the shifters?
The second book in the Pride series features Benedict Chase, attorney and younger brother of the pride's Alpha, Logan. He is bailing the youngest Chase brother, Atticus, out of jail for fighting when he sees a young woman being abused by two officers. He takes on her case pro bono, gets her out on bail, and takes her to lunch. There she ditches him, picking his wallet on the way out the door. But Benedict can't get her out of his head and begins to dig into her past while searching for her in the present. And what he finds leads to to the brink of war with the hyenas, who seem to have their hooks in the woman he fell for the first time he saw her.
