Filled with stories of irresolvable love to wild fantasy, comedy, real-life adventures, and harsh, but sensual realism, Yuri Monogatari (Lily Tales) features expressions of lesbian life and love in a way that everyone can enjoy. This annual collection of lesbian-themed, Japanese-style comic ("yuri manga") tales showcases artists and writers from around the world, including Japan, Europe, and America.
I can't browse through my Amazon recommendations without stumbling across half a dozen yaoi titles; yuri is an entirely different matter. I got this book because it promised yuri, and a wide variety of authors and stories. The book delivered on both fronts, but I can't say I'm altogether happy with my purchase.
I don't like short stories, and I don't know why I thought my feelings would change when it came to manga. There are a lot of stories in this volume, but they are short and most of them feel incredibly abrupt. There's a lack of emotional depth and relationship development in a lot of the stories, which I found frustrating.
(The stories weren't strictly *manga,* either--half of the authors are North American and European. This isn't a mark against the book, as one of the most amusing stories was by an American.)
I did like some aspects of this book: there were many different types of women included in the stories. There were at least two stories about middle-aged women, and an overall lack of impossibly perfect figures.
