"Let's see how good you really are at puzzles." Those certainly seemed strange words for a dying man to say to his favorite nephew — but no stranger than the fact that a cantankerous, eccentric millionaire like Otis Canby would suddenly die just as he is about to change his will. After all, a lot of people in Adamsport stand to profit from the old man's death. Sixteen-year-old Lester Cunningham and Wally Brenner decide to investigate, and soon discover that the real mystery is the whereabouts of the secret part of the Canby fortune — gold old Canby is known to have bought and hidden away. With little more to go on than a crossword puzzle clue and a seemingly meaningless list of paintings, Lester and Wally set out to crack the case — and find out much more than they had bargained for. Scott Corbett has written a lively mystery that will put your own wits to the test and keep you guessing until the last clue is in place.
Scott Corbett (July 27, 1913 – March 6, 2006) was an American novelist and educator. He wrote five adult novels, the first published in 1950, and then began writing books for children. He retired from teaching in 1965 to write full-time. His best known book is The Lemonade Trick, a children's novel.
High school boys solve a mystery. It's a bit dated. The boys seem older than high school, but I think that's a sign of the times in which it was written. I was surprised that I liked this as much as I did. I think I was expecting a formulaic Hardy Boys type thing.
Another Scott Corbett book I remember reading as a kid, and I still find them enjoyable. I would hope that kids can still discover Scott Corbett books today. If not, they are really missing out.
