The year is 1939. Germany, led by Adolf Hitler, has invaded Poland. The world is about to enter into the biggest and most terrible war in history. But from the depths of despair rose some very courageous, selfless individuals, such as Oskar Schindler, Raoul Wallenberg and Hannah Senesh, who risked their lives for the sakes of others in need, often for no gain and with no recognition. Here are some of their incredible stories
I picked up this junior non-fiction booklet at the library as I wanted to read a short account about people who saved Jews. This gave me just that. Very good conversation starter for children who might not know/understand about what happened during WW2. Excellent material for home-educators as well, introducing an angle of 'good things' that happened in the midst of the horrors of a war. This book I believe is also a discussion starter as children will be hearing about the war in Ukraine, welcoming Ukrainian refugees in their homes or classrooms and how (sadly) history is repeating itself... Includes photographs and a glossary of vocabulary that explains terms no longer in use today/particular to Nazi Germany, as well as a list of books and places to visit in the UK, and a short 1 page index. Highly recommended - part of a series on Heroes of World War 2. Other titles: Resisting the Nazis, Heroes of the Battlefield, Spies and Codebreakers. Check out your public library for all these titles
