Offering a unique philosophical, theoretical and process-focused introduction to one of the cornerstones of assessment and case formulation.
Updated and expanded to take account of the vast developments in the field of CBT since its first publication, this second edition follows a clear two part
- Part One introduces trainees to the key theory, practice and processes of assessment and case formulation
- Part Two provides practical illustrations of the theory through 12 extended case studies, considering both ‘simple’ and ‘complex’ presenting issues. Each of these chapters follows a set structure to enable easy comparison. Offering all they need to know about this crucial part of their training, this is essential reading for trainees on any CBT course.
A very good in-depth review of assessment and formulation in CBT, covering the pros and cons of different models and methods as well as the evidence behind those models. Very helpful to engage with the subject on a deeper level and has given me a lot of thinking-points to bear in mind while assessing clients and throughout my High Intensity training year.
There were a few points where it felt like heavier-going in terms of the level of detail, although this isn't necessarily a bad thing. The summaries and overviews were helpful.
Case studies are very useful for gaining an insight into how these principles may be applied in real-world practice. The reflective tool at the end is appreciated, and definitely highlights that this isn't just something to read and forget about, but something to actually consider and draw from in day-to-day work.
