Critter Catchers #1

Terror by Moonlight

Rate this book
Cody Bower and Demetrius Singleton have been friends for over twenty years even though they are polar opposites. Cody is tall, handsome, athletic, and straight, and Demetrius is average height, more of a thinker, and gay. They have started an animal control business together and have to figure out how to be business partners without letting it affect their friendship, but that’s the least of their problems. When one of their first clients ends up brutally murdered in what appears to be an animal attack, the two realize something big and dangerous is stalking their tiny town of Parson’s Hollow, and it’s up to them to catch it before it kills again.

Long-time best friends and "hometown losers" Cody and Demetrius may not be the brightest bulbs in the box, but they're not idiots either. Operating their new Critter Catchers business is turning out to be unexpectedly dangerous, because there's something rampaging through their small town that's much larger — and more terrifying — than the raccoons and possums they expected to be chasing after.

Sure, they're an unlikely duo to be investigating the resulting spate of local murders — but then, they're the only ones who saw the werewolf. Or did they? Maybe it was a wolfman instead. After all, it's an important distinction.

This is fun, funny, and silly, with loads of UST that stays unresolved over the course of the story. It seems like a perfect read for anyone needing to recover from angst overload. I immediately bought the next book in the series.

Terror by Moonlight by Hank Edwards
Critter Catchers series #1. Horror, M-M romance.
Cody Bower and Demetrius Singleton have been friends for twenty three years. They are opposites in many things but they’ve paired together and created a business called Animal Control with Heart. Their very first call is to get a raccoon out of a house but as they sit in a mock blind in a tree, their client and the raccoon is killed. Detective Lori believes they didn’t kill their client, but she does believe they know more than they believe. All evidence points to a wolf. A big one. Parson’s Hollow will never be the same.

Parson’s Hollow, Parson’s Pines, Parson’s Police Station, Parson’s Hollow Herald, Parson’s Creek, Parson’s Woods, and Hollow Leg for the bar. Kinda funny.

As the police investigation continues, Cody and Demmy talk with family and friends and and realize their business model is exactly what’s needed to save the town from the crazed wolf that is stalking and killing the local residents. They also realize there relationship may be more than just friends.
The beginning of the Critter Catchers business reveals there is a dark side to their small town.
It will be interesting to see where this series goes. Clearly the relationship, but I’m curious to see what the next creature will be.

I'm incredibly conflicted about this one 🙃 I really wanted to like it because I've heard good things about the series as a whole, but based off this book alone I'm unsure if I will. I plan to continue since I'm told it will take more time for things to develop, but I could see how someone would drop things here.

I knew going in this was a novella, but I still expected more. More of what exactly? Of everything, I think 🤷🏼‍♀️ More substance in general, but more importantly more chemistry between the main characters. It just felt like something was missing, and it didn't help that one of the MCs was hooking up with someone else on page 💀 The other MCs is supposed to be a straight playboy, so I guess it made sense in context, but I still didn't like it. Even by the end of this book, no progress had been made towards the endgame couple. I hope that changes in book two because I'd like to see the promise of what's to come if I'm going to stick with the series 😅

Another thing that threw me was the writing being more simplistic than I had expected. It made for an easy read, but almost too easy, if that makes sense. I don't mean to be harsh when I say this, but it had the feeling of an early reader chapter book 🙈 I was able to fly through it without much thought, never having to stop and think about anything. It was all very surface level - the writing, the mystery, the attempt at developing a friends to lovers story. I've never read anything else by this author, so I'm not sure if I should expect that to change. It wasn't bad per se, but it was a change from what I normally expect in the genre. Anyway, here's to hoping things turn around for me in book two because the premise is fun, and I can see the potential for what the series could be 🤞🏻

Despite my youthful infatuation with Shaggy (so much hotter than Fred) and affection for early Supernatural, I generally have nothing but disdain for the traditional B-movie monster types: vampires, werewolves, zombies, etc. To add to that, I'm nearly as fussy about humor as I am about food. Meaning, the list of things I like is shorter than the list of things I don't, and frankly, I just tend to assume anything specifically marketed as humor is not remotely funny and refuse to read or watch it.

So you may wonder how I came to pick up what's clearly a tongue-in-cheek werewolf book. It's all a matter of managing expectations. Coming after two highly anticipated reads both of which I had fears of being let down by, and both of which turned out fantastic, whatever came next was going to have a hard time measuring up. When that happens, I find it often works out if I pick something I have no mental investment in. Something I fully expect to be complete fluff at best, and have no qualms about tossing if it turns out to be terrible.

Hence: Terror by Moonlight

While the author may have been aiming more for the Supernatural set, (one character specifically mentions the Winchesters), the first thing this reminded me of was Lansdale's Hap & Leonard series. Two down on their luck buddies, one gay, taking odd jobs that result in them fighting criminals in one case, monsters in this one.

Of course apart from that it's nothing like Hap & Leonard. The tone here is more Scooby-Doo, which is not a criticism, though not quite to the rubber mask level. The humor was a mixed bag, some of it I appreciated, but other moments, like Cody's ridiculous victory dance in chapter one when they get an actual job, nearly made me DNF.

(When aliens destroy the human race, I'm conviced it won't be to take our resources, should there be any left, but because they've seen our sitcoms and decided we should be put down, for our own good, and the good of the universe.)

But despite a few cringe-worthy moments, I actually enjoyed the interplay between these two morons and was amused enough I might come back to the series when I need some more filler on my GR dance card.

I really enjoyed this as a fun, quick read. I love the concept of the series, it's very X-Files but gay which is totally in my wheelhouse.

I'm already obsessed with the slow burn going on, and the fact that it seems like it's going to be glacial. I'm here for it all, and I've already got the second book open and ready to read.

The mystery itself was probably the weakest part of the book though, there wasn't much time to devote to anything more than a surface level mystery with only 150 pages to work with, so that's the one thing I hope to see improve in the future as I go through this series.

Minor criticism aside, there is not nearly enough m/m horror/paranormal/mystery type series so I'm just happy to have this.

ENGLISH:

A light novel for good  entertainment, this is what it promises and delivers with some touches of humor. Two guys in their thirties decide to start a pest/animal control business after losing their previous jobs. Soon they must face an enemy that is killing the inhabitants of their community, starting with their first customers. And they will also have to face their growing feelings: one is gay and the other is straight in principle but he is beginning to have doubts. The author plays all the time with unresolved sexual and emotional tension, so it is not a book suitable for those who are not looking for a romantic story between men. The story is short and quickly goes to the end and is more an introduction to a longer series. 4 stars because it delivers what it promises.

happy October, my friends! starting the month off with a light, gory read where limbs pinwheel off the page and blood gets splattered on all surfaces - brilliant 👻

i will say i prefer mysteries that allow for clue-collecting and crime-solving on the reader’s part. since the MCs were made to act more reactionary rather than true investigatory, there wasn’t much i could actively participate in as i was reading. Cody also grated on my nerves a bit, but i typically don’t do well with manchild characters in general, so i hope he has a development arc that ultimately blows my socks off!

Plain and simple, I’m absolutely head over heels in love with every single aspect of this series. I devoured the entire thing in a week—woke up extra early to read, stayed up too late, read while walking, eating, and frankly—instead of writing! Hank Edwards created such a quirky, hilarious, terrifying, and desperately romantic series that it is now going to be one of my comfort re-reads forever. I’ve never been a huge fan of slow burns (I am impatient) or friends to lovers (there never seems to be enough focus on the importance of the friendship) but wow… Edwards did both tropes justice and blew me away.

Our adventure begins with Terror by Moonlight. Cody Bower and Demetrius Singleton are best friends. Have been for nearly their entire lives. Despite polar opposite looks and personalities—Cody the athletic straight guy, and Demmy the quiet thinker who is gay—they have gone into business together after holding down uninteresting, lackluster jobs in their small town of Parson’s Hollow. They’ve opened Critter Catchers, an animal control company with heart. But so far, they’re in the red and have next to no customers.

Their first call is to remove a raccoon from the house of a cranky old man, and during that process both the raccoon and man end up… well… very dead. Bloody and torn apart, as if attacked by a very big and very vicious animal. And to make matters worse, one of Cody’s many ex-girlfriends is a cop on the local force and she smells something hinky about Cody and Demmy’s presence at the crime scene. Add to this a new reporter for the local paper, Oliver, being romantically interested in Demmy, and Cody trying to understand his jealousy—no, it’s just annoyance, really—the guys are in for a wild adventure.

Because what makes this series outrageously fun and scary? Monsters are real and the Critter Catchers are on the case. Cody and Demmy have to face the reality that something very dangerous is lurking in the woods around town and they’re the only ones who can stop it before more citizens are slaughtered.

I’d read this first book a while ago and loved it, but somehow life got in the way and I’d forgotten to read the rest. So when I returned to this title a second time, howling with laughter and freaking out over the chaos that ensued, I dropped off the face of the planet to read the rest of the series. Cody’s uncertainty around his best friend, his confusion and hesitancy over why he finds himself occasionally taking a look at Demmy’s backside, and dealing with his intense dislike of Oliver, is heart wrenching. He’s stumbling around in the dark, trying to make sense of his own sexuality, and is too baffled and afraid to say anything to anyone. Edwards does such an amazing job at crafting Demmy and Cody’s friendship. The depth of their relationship, even in Book One, makes both their inner struggles so profound and believable. Incredible character construction, from positive to negative traits, dialogue, reactions, and everything in between.

I'm glad I was mislead. I enjoyed this story, and wouldn't have read it otherwise.
I read it for a challenge, list said Childhood Friends Become Gay Lovers....and wile that might happen later in the series, it doesn't happen in this book.

Still, it was a fun read. Best friends, stumble across a werewolf, and step up to the plate to take care of business. Who better to deal with a real life werewolf, than a humane animal control team?

The were cute, both kinda pining for the other. But with one of the being strait, no headway was made. Maybe in the future.

It was a challenge that had me return...but I saw the title and thought this was cute enough I should revisit.
Cody is adorable in his jealousy.

Review: TERROR BY MOONLIGHT by Hank Edwards

A truly delightful and satisfying Gay horror tale, and I'm so glad this is the debut of a series, TERROR BY MOONLIGHT is #1 of "Critter Catchers." Not just a horror story, but a narrative of character and relationship evolution, TERROR BY MOONLIGHT showcases two lifelong friends, ladies' man Cody, and Gay Demetrius. Not too much employment in their small Pennsylvania community, so the two form a compassionate animal control service. Good idea, till their customers, one after the other, are attacked and murdered--by an animal. Next, the friends are targeted too.

I’m a big fan of Hank Edwards. His Williamsburg Inn stories are some of my favorites. This was a fun light read even if it was pretty gory. I couldn’t decide if Cody and Demetrius were going to get together or just stay business partners and best friends. I guess that’s a mystery for future books. There seems to be quite a few of them.

Somehow missed this series when it came out a few years ago. Which is too bad, because it's a fun fluffy supernatural goofball adventure. It's easy to find affection for these characters. Enjoyable, solid writing.

DNF, bailing at 22% after once again being told how a character feels after being shown same. This is probably entertaining to less picky readers, so don't let my review keep you from giving it a try!

Cody and Dem are best friends who are starting a critter control business. At their first and second jobs they are confronted by nasty murders, and following the sighting of a creature on the highway, they are convinced they are looking for a werewolf.
A good story which moves at a good pace.

I've had Critter Catchers on my TBR for a while and now I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to start this series! Cody and Demmy are the Critter Catchers, just two small-town lifelong best friends who are ready to strike out with their own critter-catching business. Unfortunately, we soon learn that poor Demmy has forever harbored a secret crush on his straight best friend Cody. And Cody has been a serial monogamist who's left broken-hearted nearly every eligible lady in their town but, frustratingly, just doesn't seem to know what he's really looking for. So it's both amusing and achingly sweet watching these guys' feelings start to sloooowly shift as they face increasingly more harrowing creatures together. I'm so excited to continue this series!

Audiobook review

Story: 4 stars
Narration: 3 stars

I have read all of the Critter Catcher books and was excited to try them on audiobook. The story is fun and moves fast. I love the friendship between Cody & Demetrius. The performance was ok, I thought the narrator was sort of monotone in places. I had to slow down the speed because he read very fast.

This series is really good and I enjoyed this first book. I think the series gets better and the writing gets stronger as the books move on. This is friends to lovers at its finest and it’s slow going at first but believe me, it pays off!

3.5 stars!

This was a lot of fun! It’s a very quick read, and I’ll admit some of the red herrings got me. I did guess who the big bad wolf was, but probably only because I guessed a lot of people. I like Demmy and Cody a lot and I really hope eventually they realize their feelings for each other.

4.5 star series. Be prepared to suspend reality and enjoy a low angst, mild drama, warm, charming story, sort of X-files meets X-rated Scooby Doo. We have two guys just trying to do their jobs, but stumbling into one paranormal mystery after another. They have no experience investigating, policing or using weapons, so all they have is their wits, what they have on hand and good old common sense to get out of tough situations. Excellent writing, great combination of descriptive surroundings with great dialogue.

Series of 7 books following the same couple, must be read in order as it’s a slow/burn friends to lovers story. We have a full spectrum of lovely storytelling with some pining for a straight best friend, bi-awakening, monster hunting, mild violence and gore, mild injury, small town issues, big family dynamics. This series is incredibly balanced with romance, sexiness and actual plot, very well done and left me satisfied and entertained on all fronts.

Book 8 is about another couple, same universe. I skipped it as I wasn’t too invested in the characters, whom we had met through the other books.

HEA, series, same couple, vers, m/m, best friends to lovers, monsters/urban legends, mystery.

I've waited for a long time to hear the voices of Hank Edwards's characters with my very own ears. I was simply delighted when he admitted he would be investing in the audio recordings of the Critter Catcher series. I'm IN LOVE with this narrator! He read the book perfectly and I can't say how much I appreciate that. In this series, long-time buddies Cody Bower (straight) and Demetrius Singleton (gay) go into business together launching a humane pest control company (Critter Catchers). They are called out to take care of a bothersome raccoon but found a critter that is too brutal for their special methods. A werewolf is running about the small town of Parson's Hollow committing brutal murders. And the boys must solve the mystery before they become the next victims. This series is such fun and the cast of characters in the book is absolutely amazing. Enjoy, folks.

Terror By Moonlight is awesome. Demmy and Cody are lifelong friends who decided to start a business wrangling animals that stray a little too close to the human population. Little did they know that would include the supernatural!

The book has everything. Friendship, romance, action/adventure, suspense, humor, family ... the list goes on. It has the tone of a cozy mystery, so don't let the title or cover scare you away. It's a fun read and a great start to Demmy and Cody's story. 10/10, highly recommend!

This book was a riot. I kept laughing throughout (and cringing at times), and thought it was a good start to a new series. Demetrius was a blast, and I really liked his character. I had a harder time getting to like Cody, as he came across more juvenile and immature, which made it hard to see him as an investigator or potentially successful business owner. And the absolute slow burn and unresolved sexual tension that is their relationship drove me bonkers at times. However, I’m interested to see where they go from here.
